I am wondering why Cora didn't bring Velazquez in for a couple of innings instead of going with Kelly.

Kelly only pitched 1 inning. Velazquez was probably pitching tomorrow. I'm not sure Cora was expecting to be able to use Eovaldi tomorrow.

Boston.com:

With the Red Sox trailing by a run in the sixth inning on Tuesday, manager Alex Cora called for Joe Kelly. The reliever has struggled of late, but Kelly was set to face the bottom of the Baltimore lineup and Cora felt that was a “good pocket” in the game for him. “Two guys that are hitting .200 and a lefty in there,” Cora said, per the Eagle Tribune. “We have to trust him. He’s very important for us. It just didn’t happen.”

In other words, he thought sending Kelly in against the bottom of the Orioles order would be a confidence boost for Kelly. Unfortunately, Kelly + Pomeranz in the same game = loss.

As I've been known to say about my own life, "It seemed like a Hell of an idea.... at the time!"

After his little dust up with Austin , " Smokin' " Joe Kelly was the toast of the town. Now , folks want to run him out of town. What have you done for me lately , " Smokin' " Joe ?

Great find. Thanks.

Thanks for this. Makes sense.

I was just thinking that Velazquez is our long man, so I figured he be in there since Pom didn't last very long.

Sometimes the bear eats you.

And sometimes you play dead and it just viciously mauls you and cripples you for life before lumbering away to f*** up someone else's day. This is a good metaphor for choosing between Pomeranz and Kelly.

Kelly at least still has velocity. With that, he might make a comeback. Pom doesn't have major leauge stuff at this point. Can he regain it? Unlikely.

Cora made a mistake tonight by allowing Bradley to hit with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth down a run. Moreland was available to pinch hit. The result was predictable. K.

Another perfect example tonight why you don't get rid of Hanley Ramirez IMO....I don't recommend relying on guys like Swihart and Jackie Bradley in big situations....

He could have done that

Moreland is a better option, but I haven't seen him come thru in crucial situations yet

As much as most people think getting rid of Hanley was a great decision, he was a player that came thru in crucial situations(game winner this year and in playoffs)...If having Moreland was a significant reason why the team chose to part ways with HanRam then where was Moreland tonight????????????

Since Hanley, it seems the Sox have gone on an epic tear?

I'm ok not having him hang around waiting for a shot, while Mooreland steps up to become an All Star.

39 out of 57 = .684 with Hanley a sleeping giant all the month of May. .163 / .500

71 out of 104 = .683 Mooreland .273 / .842 49 rbi's All Star

* would never had happened with HanRam around! That is the bottom line.

Hanley had to go.

When one says something stupid, one can deny it later. When one posts something stupid, it's there forever. Just something you may want to consider in the future.

When Cora writes a book about managing, I'll be sure to read it. Yup, right after I finish reading Sean Spicer's book about being a press secretary.

Hahahaha.

Cora managed like a rookie manager tonight.

Moreland has been an excellent pinch hitter throughout his career. Unless he was hurt, it was big missed opportunity by Cora.

I'm not even sure why Moreland wasn't in the lineup against the righty starter.....

As far as pinch hitting goes, he should have used Moreland for Pearce (rather than Bradley).

He also may have been too quick to pull Brian Johnson. Johnson had around 80 pitches at that point?

So far this abysmally stupid manager has the best winning percentage in Sox history. We lost last night because no one was hitting: 5 hits, 1 double, 0 for 8 with RISP. And the bullpen gave up a couple of crucial runs.

Yeah, I just don't get why some people are so anxious to crucify the manager. But then again when I first started posting on a Sox message board in 2007 the thing I didn't get was how many people were crushing Francona. And that was in a season in which the Sox won their second ring in four years under him.

Johnson threw 84 pitches, which is tied for the most he's thrown all year. They don't want to overextend him. If he keeps pitching this well they'll probably increase his pitch count.

They need to crucify something. Sacred to enjoy the success. I can't remember the poster's names (one was D- something I think) but I've read some extraordinary things in the match threads from two posters. One said we needed to blow it all up and another has continually called the team dummies and not good enough.

I mean at what point can you enjoy the success of a team if it isn't what they are doing now? Some people just see everything negative in life. That's got to be a grind.
