Well, this will be harder to bounce back from. But hopefully it can at least stabilize things. The reality with Pedroia is that really his deal has been all about injuries. When he has been healthy, he has been almost metronomically consistent 3-5 win player. In 2014 he had his .337 OBP, which was his career worst by a significant margin - so nagging stuff and basic fluke can explain that.

The deal made trading him hard yes - but the Red Sox were never going to get fair value for him. He meant more to Boston than to anybody else that way ... plus, as noted above - he was still really good, and a serious bargain for the production. Really riding it out was the only option.

He's been one of the best 15-20 players in team history ... but you do have to start thinking about the end here.

I have been a fan of Pedroia all these year. He will have a difficult time making back into the lineup in 2018 and probably not much chance of that happening until the all star break. He will have to assess how he feels and whether or not he can contribute. From what I have heard of him, he is not a very communicative guy and may not be able to continue on in baseball as a coach or manager when his playing days are over.

Don't count Pedroia out. He'll be back, and while he won't play like he did in his prime, he will give us solid production.

Sometimes surgery actually works and helps a player going forward. I'm trying to be optimistic he returns when we need him, and he can be more dependable.

Microfracture surgery helped Carlos Beltran.

This just in: he needs amputation.

If there is one guy who has the mental makeup to come through mf surgery and thrive, it is pedroia.

I am not happy that he fractured our locker room this past season, but if we get a good August through October 2018 and relatively healthy season out of the guy, that can only make us a better team!

Uh, yes because he's been so great at grinding through seasons and still being productive!

His fielding has been top shelf. I would still take him over almost every other second baseman for fielding.

You think Marrero would be a big step down?

I think you're trying to make far too much gravy with the 'negative WAR offensive player'. He's not a DH. It's total WAR that matters.

The worst offensive fWAR in the majors last year belonged to Rougned Odor. Should Texas give up on him after ths t big extension?

History is nice, but what have you done for me lately, as in this past year?????

Dustin Pedroia is 20th in JAWS and 22nd in WAR all time at 2nd. He’s just above Jeff Kent and just behind Ian Kinsler all time. He’s clearly in the hall of very good. He’s a borderline HOFer. Complaining about his production as his body falls apart is ridiculous

He didn't do badly while playing hurt all year.

Too much emphasis is placed on most recent production. Baseball is not a game that most recent output is a good predictor of what is to come.

Certainly, there is a correlation in most cases, but so is the last 2, 3 and 4 year sample sizes.

BTW, out of 34 second basemen with 400+ PAs, Pedey still finished...

19th in WAR at +1.0 (which is a higher ranking than several other "healthy players" on his team placed at their positions.)

21st in OPS at .760

18th in wRC+ at 102

18th in wOBA at .331

1st in UZR/150 at 9.7 (3rd in UZR, which is a cumulative stat.)

Yeah, it sucks when you can't count on a player to play nearly everyday. That's a reality. He will likely miss a big chunk of next year and force the Sox to use Hernandez, Lin, Holt or Marrero for several months. That hurts. I get it.

I just don't think Pedey was a major reason we did not advance any farther this year.

According to MLB Trade Rumors, two-time All Star second baseman Jason Kipnis of the Cleveland Guardians may be available but the 30-year-old has dealt with his own injury issues:

Kipnis has two years and $30.5 million remaining on his contract.

I doubt we do anything at 2B but hope & pray Hernandez/Holt/Lin/Marrero can carry us over until Pedey can play again.

They'd be playing him at 2B this fall/winter, if they even thought he could play there. They are not.

Up the middle defense is one of the most important aspects of the game. Few teams win without solid up the middle defense. Light hitting second baseman are really not all that uncommon to the game. Even if Chavis was a decent fielder, he would not have time enough to learn how to get it done around the second base bag over the course of one winter and one spring. Doesn't matter where he has played in the past. A healthy Hernandez is the guy I put my money on for getting the first shot at taking over that job. Marrero next followed possibly by Lin. All solid defenders who have real second base experience.

Whoops forgot about Holt (some would tell me to forget about Holt) - imagine that!
