Changed my mind.

My first option is to get a free agent with no loss of draft pick. Otherwise, just sit tight and move on.

Chris Freakin Sale repeats.

Price gives us entire season.

Porcello can't be any worse, can he?

Pomeranz continues to improve.

Finally healthy, E Rod gives us quality starts beginning in June.

Carson Smith continues to get stronger.

Tyler Thornburg returns to his Milwaukee days.

Kimbrel repeats.

Hanley gives us 130 games at 1B.

Betts back to his MVP runner up year.

JBJ goes on a two month hot streak.

Beni improves on his rookie year.

Any player can be dealt. We’ve seen it before with huge contracts trading hands in deals that, before their consummation, would have been thought impossible to pull off. So even though this seems daunting, it could absolutely happen. And Stanton is an amazing player who would look fantastic in the middle of the Red Sox batting order. So the Red Sox should explore things with the Marlins. And they will. But in the end, wouldn’t it be easier to skip all the above and give J.D. Martinez $175 million, check off that box, and move on with your offseason?

He makes it sound like one phone call to Borass would get it done.

Everyone makes everything sound easier than it actually is.

@NBC10_Joe

A source tells me that the #RedSox are still very much in play for Giancarlo Stanton. In fact the only reason that he was not hot on Boston right away is because of the cold weather. His top choice is the Dodgers, then the Giants after that if they can put together a contender.

Someone let him know that average gametime temps are colder in SF than BOS!

If I was Boston I'd say to Miami we may be interested in Stanton but strictly in exchange for cash - no players. And he waives the opt out. Then battle on exactly how much of the contract Miami eats. It really should be a buyer's market here with that albatross of a contract.

But before I do that, I'm looking elsewhere first.

Stanton's contract is not a guaranteed albatross by current standards, but it's obviously out of reach for all but a handful of teams.

It may end being an albatross, but certainly GS would get more than $295M/10, if he was on the market right now.

The fact that his contract only counts as $25M a year for luxury tax purposes, his actual cost is much less to teams planning to be over the limit a few times over the next 10 years- Boston included.

I do NOT think any teams needs to take the whole contract AND give up a lot of top talent, and I wouldn't give up a ton of talent, but I'd give something substantial.

In a world where 40 players (not counting this year's free agents) are guaranteed to earn at least $20 million next year -- including David Price and four others at $30 million or above -- the contract of 28-year-old Giancarlo Stanton is not an albatross.

Twenty-four clubs have at least one contract at $20 million or above. Only the Rays, Padres, Pirates, Guardians, Phillies and Athletics lack a player at $20 million or above (although the White Sox are not paying most of James Shields' $21 million salary):

As salaries continue to spiral Stanton's contract could still provide value in its waning year even if his production declines.

I totally agree, but often do teams trade for a $295M contract AND give up lots of top talent to get it?

When numerous teams enter the bidding.

Has jeter ever publically states who besides Stanton is on the trading block?

Not sure, but Dee Gordon and Prado have been mentioned by the press, whereas Yelich and Ozuna are apparently off-limits.

If nobody offers a lot for Stanton and his whole contract, Miami will likely settle for the best they can get.

There's a pretty wide idea of what that might be, and some of us will likely be surprised at how much or how little he ends up being trade for.

My guess is it will be on the low side.

It takes only two bidders to jack up the price.

How often has it happened? Or even something similar to this?

You won't find many good comps to this.

Maybe when A-Rod was up for grabs after 2003 with 7 years left on his megadeal? A-Rod was actually an even bigger commodity than Stanton at the time.

We almost traded Manny and Lester for him!

Of course we tried to lower the amount of money due to him - as you may recall.

True enough, and his "star appeal" will bring many fans to the park and their TV sets. There's a good chance 2 or more teams get involved, but at $295M, I'm not sure moire than 2 teams will offer a bunch of talent.

Manny was owed a lot of money, so it's not really a fair comp. Nobody has ever trade a salary even close to this for just prospects.

The closest comp I see out there was the AGon, CC, Beckett dump on the Dodgers, but even that trade involved LA taking CC in order to get AGon.

Maybe Miami might force Prado on the team taking GS, but that should, in theory, lessen the return needed.

It takes one bidder bidding against himself. How do you think ARod got his 10 year $250 mil deal in the first place

...and how we got Dice-K for way more than the next bidder.
