Todd Frazier may have had no interest in the Red Sox. Or vice versa.

But the public is obsessed with lists: the top free agents, the top universities, the top travel destinations.

In the eye of the public, the entity at the top of the list immediately becomes worth two or three times the worth of the entity ranked 10th when in fact the drop-off is less drastic.

I trust you're not including savvy Talksox posters in this 'public' of which you speak.

I want Nunez as he was a key player from the day he stepped onto the field for the Sox. The Yankees are persuing him as well, so we need to move and to hell with JD.

OT ....l am beyond frustrated .I think everyone has made there point players and Dave ....enough is enough now .Put offers on the table to Nuney ,Final offer for JD with an opt out ,Lomo who I like a lot .The Nunez and JD get plan A the Lomo Nunez plan B .I would looooove to deal Porcello and get Arieta though ....he seems like a bulldog like Lester .A lineup with Betts ,Nunez ,JD ,Devers ,Benny is exciting to think about .A playoff Ritation with Sale ,Price ,Arietta excites me as much . I'm not going to cry that Frazier went somewhere else. If the Sox signed him instead of JD, it would have been very underwhelming.

I agree, but it does look like a better signing than Moreland at 2/13.

I have always been a fan of signing 2nd tier type players to 2-3 year contracts, as opposed to signing the top guys to 5+ years.

Just talked to an agent who believes that we won’t see many, if any of the top free agents come off the board until March.

“It’s horrific,” the agent said. “I think that’s where we are headed.”

We could be waiting several more weeks for anything to happen.

Hosmer writing on the wall with the Royals ...must be the years and not AAV with them ...best guess 7 years 149 and oh yes this will absolutely complicate things .I have a feeling that JD is the player saying he will sit out half the year ....don't they have the same agent ? He's hearing it all.The deal that gets JD is 6 years 150 ....The deal I'd feel comfy with 3 at 90 .if I'm Dave I'd offer 3 years 90 and a 5 year 130 with an opt out year 2 lol Edited by Natick to NC

JD isn't worth 6 x150. Period. He is barely worth 5x125. If he wants to sit out half a year I will gladly buy him a beer and watch some baseball with him. Baseball is a strange and unpredictable game. Who knows who will really produce this year. I know we had a lot of guys underproducing last year. If our pitching is solid we can compete with the Yankees this year WITHOUT Martinez. Let him sit it out......

I don't think things are as dire as some seem to think it is.

Just because big signings are on hold does not mean the end of the world. Some good offers have been made. Sides are not miles away.

I doubt it goes to March, but I suppose some might sign then.

I'm not worried. There's no need to panic and make demands that cause us to lose our top option(s).

Fred Lynn very Well said just my best guess at what his minimum is right now in his and Scott's mind ...if Hos goes at 7 for 149 than what's that say to JD ? I don't care what it says ,but I'm playing along here .My take is offer a short term 3 for 90 or like you are saying go 5 at 125 and maybe slip an opt out year 3 ? Who knows ? But this is getting stupid ...they are a week out now....I'm getting nervous we don't land JD or Nuney or Lomo now .In reality what's JD really worth ? He's a DH for us and maybe a few days a month OF ....that type of player is maybe worth what 15 to 18 Million player tops ? a truly fair deal is 18 for 4 .....right ? ... Edited by Natick to NC

Still time for dave to sign a major pitcher.

Let Boras struggle to come up with plan b for JD!

Perhaps the Red Sox are Plan B.:)

If we're JD's plan B, and we say, "This is our highest offer," Boras should do the right thing and tell us, we're out.

He may want us to stick around to help drive the price up for their plan A team.

I'd be fine with any of this...

LoMo & Cobb

LoMo & Nunez (trade HRam & Holt or Swihart, if possible)

Duda, Nunez & Lynn (trade HRam & Holt or Swihart, if possible)

Ken Rosenthall reporting JD Martinez is fed up with the Redsox inflexibility and wants to join another club now .Well there's our answer JD is done with Boston . Edited by Natick to NC

Somehow I think this is the proverbial middle finger to Boston and it's the first real news out of JD ...I believe the report and we need to move the hell on now .This is beyond alarming and needs to be treated as such ....you see our leverage that we believed we had ????? Was null and voided tonight .The next thing we need to hear is Boston is moving the hell on via trade or FA .Go after Arietta . Edited by Natick to NC

Rosenthal is usually wrong.

He could be wrong but there very well might be something to it. If DD is intent on waiting this one out until the end, I think that he is making a mistake. I really hope that he moves away from him. I've suspected for a long time that if the money is even close that he would choose Arizona over Boston. 125 for 5 for JD Martinez doesn't seem to be making it - time to go to plan B if there is one.

I guess that works both ways. I'm sick of Martinez inflexibility too.

If it's worth it to JDM to possibly walk away from a few million dollars because he doesn't like the Sox "inflexibility" he needs to remember that flexibility is a two-way street.

So let me get this straight - the Red Sox are a bunch of miserable pricks, even though they've made the highest offer.

What a Looney Tunes offseason. And it's a long way from over.

If there is a shred of proof to these rumors, I don't see this working out very well for either side if JD comes to Boston. Obviously it is all about the money. At some point, doesn't it have to be about some things more than just that? If the answer to this question is no, I'm going to be moving away from ml baseball. I do still think that there are some players who play for something in addition to the $ but maybe there aren't as many of them as I have hoped there are. I don't blame Martinez for trying to get a fair payday but the Sox have offered plenty and he isn't happy with the offer. Move away from him DD.

Love this team but there's some baggage that comes from playing here ...way more media way more fan IQ and expectations ...to me those would drive me but for some and what we have all seen they whither on the vine under this atmosphere .I would throw maybe an additional 5 million for this but not a red penny more ...it's the Boston and NY tax if that's what we want to call it .The truth is he's as slow as Papi and wants to play OF here ? Come on ! We have a fantastic OF ....135 over 5 now ...this is a red flag no sixth year .I don't care if this is a boras ploy take the offer today JD or we move on with pitching .

so that is interesting - I'm guessing that there might be one other person on here who appreciates what I have to say at least some of the time. You don't like what I have to offer - use the ignore button.

“I don’t have a (timetable) on it because I really don’t know,” said Dombrowski to Rosenthal. “Perhaps if I was losing options, juggling three guys, or if we were in the starting-pitching market where there are four (top) guys, I would say, ‘Hey, I need an answer now, or I’m going to turn to this guy.’ But we’re really not in that situation.”

He must think there is another guy he can grab if he wants to.

Beyond the lack of competition for Martinez on the free-agent market, Dombrowski also suggested that the trade market could yet be a viable approach. The veteran exec called it “amazing” to be hearing of so many players available in trade talks at this juncture of the offseason.

“At this time of year, you normally don’t get phone calls out of the blue about such-and-such being available,” said Dombrowski. “I have. I don’t know what’s going to go on.”

Also, this is kind of interesting.

That is certainly a strong possibility, but eventually, it becomes "final offer" time.

I don't think we should look at past signing periods as an indicator of what point we are or should be at now.

Last year, 99 out of 158 FAs (62.6%) had signed by now. This year it is at 61 out of 166 (36.7%). While that differential looks massive, I don't think it's as serious as many seem to think it is. Many of these players have huge offers on the table.

It's guys like Moustakas, LoMo and maybe a couple others that may be seriously impacted by this year's situation.

With the Sox recently resetting their tax, we should think about pouncing on the mid-level players at "bargain rates", instead of upping our offer to JD.

I'd seriously consider telling Boras, this is it ______. Let us know in __ days, or we move on, but if the market will all be delayed another 2-3 weeks, maybe it's not time to make ultimatums. .
