How did a tweak on Dave turn into a jab at Ben? LOL

FTR, I like his patient approach this offseason.

How about Boy Wonder destroying the Sox rotation?

How about signing two stiffs to to $20. mil /year long term contracts?

No. Dave faced no challenges taking the Sox job.

Everything was honkey dorry.

The guy that did the chat on MLBTR today thinks the free agents will soon start signing at a clip of one or two a day. That would seem to make sense. But this has been one wacky offseason.

What is it, the biggest game of chicken in history or something?

If players start signing in a flurry, DD better not let plan B escape and be forced to overpay for what's left (JD?).

You have to do it the right way and ensure you deal for maximum return. You also need to take the best talent available when you get high draft picks. For years, the pirates had gotten high picks and they’d use them on garbage. I still remember Bullington going #1 and he wasn’t even a top 10 consensus guy. This was before the draft slotting, so the strategy made no sense.

Even the Astros weren't perfect with their high draft pick - Mark Appel being a prime example.

In fact Appel was a bad pick for both Houston and Pittsburgh, I believe. ..

Wouldn't the other way around also be true? Who else is lurking?

Who is still in running for Martinez? Sox and the Diamondbacks?

I can't imagine the D-backs topping $125M/5. I'm wondering if the Sox offer is for even less than that.

Yes. I just don't see another taker for JD.

I'm worried that Darvish and Arietta sign, and then what are our options beyong JD?

Cobb/Lynn and Morrison/Duda?

It’s either a stat revolution or collusion. I’d assume a bit of both

The Stros maxed Appel’s value by dealing him for Giles

Arizona - Boston - the end unless someone grabs him for less than is currently be offered due to someone dropping out of the bidding war games

Every single soul in the media is 100% convinced Martinez will end up in Boston. The Diamondback buzz is apparently contingent upon trading Greinke, who happens to have the highest AAV in MLB history. There is no peep connecting him elsewhere

So yes, I expect some completely unexpected team to swoop in shortly...

Masslive has excellent summary of 27 players traded by DD.

On the surface the one that really hurt was the Thornburg deal. Of course things can still change as some of these young players mature. Right now, for me, Kimbrel trade looks fair (Moon will argue we are paying FA money plus gave away prospects).

I simply can't fault the Sale's trade no matter how good Kopech and Moncada turns out.

Margot is starting CF for the Padres but his path was blocked with the Sox.

Anderson Espinoza (Pomeranz)has dropped to #7 in Padres organizational ranking. He's still young and can recover from his surgery. Another solid year from Pom will go long way in justifying the trade.

Dever's success will also go long way in erasing memories of couple of these trades. Moncade and Shaw.

Carson Smith with 3 years of team control for Wade Miley definitely looks to be a winner especially if he can lock down the set up role. We still may get some mileage from Elias.

I'm anxious to see where Micahel Chaviz's game is in September.

Offers are not made public in the highly confidential negotiations.

A fuzzy report of an offer might be leaked out by an underling who risks losing his or her job with the team or with the sports agency.

I suspect J.D. Martinez has several offers and any Red Sox offer, pending or expired, is/was not the best offer. Martinez, thinking that the Red Sox are under the most pressure to sign the top free agent hitter, may be waiting for the Sox to top the current best offer.

Or not.:)

You might be right but if there is another team that swoops in to get JD I bet he winds up being paid less than he would be in Boston. It would be hard for me to believe that there is somebody out there who is topping the offer made by the Sox. if that were the case, I think that he would have already signed with someone else.

That may be backward.

If the Red Sox have the current best offer J.D. Martinez would be likely to accept it because I suspect he and Scott Boras see no other team under intense pressure to sign the top free agent hitter.

Wouldn't Arizona have some concerns about J.D. playing outfield in out lying years?

The Carson Smith trade has been a win for the Seattle Mariners as well.

A good trade should have two winners.:)

Because of reported budget limitations, I don't see the Diamondbacks as major players in the J.D. Martinez sweepstakes.

$100 mill would be a true lowball offer. It would explain why JDM hasn't accepted it yet.

Especially if J.D. Martinez has a better offer or offers.

If the Red Sox offer has leaked out, you'd think any higher offers would as well.

Other clubs might exercise appropriate discretion in keeping negotiations confidential.

When MLB Trade Rumors, which has a decent record of projecting free agent contracts, projects a six-year, $150 million contract, I doubt that all offers came in at no more than two-thirds of that total amount.

I don't necessarily think that my comment was backward at all. I still feel that if Martinez had an offer on the table that was higher than the Red Sox offer he would already be signed. I might not have stated clearly what I meant to say. My guess is that if he waits too long, there is a chance that Boston moves away from him. If that is the case, my bet is that he signs for less. I realize that this is all about business but it is starting to be a turn off for me. I don't care if he comes or not at this point.

Interesting and thorough piece. I'd like to see the same article done 1, 2 and 3 years from now.

I'm not sure we will see much input from any prospects this year. If we do, it will likely be because of a major injury or struggle.
