Source: Carson Smith, Red Sox agree to $850,000 salary for 2018, avoiding arbitration.

cots projected $1M.

With those savings, we should be able to offer the sun & moon for JD.

(LOL)

I think that if we signed Martinez that there would be plenty of time to negotiate with him. The way I look at it the Sox will be competing financially next year for one of the big timers anyway so yup I would be ok with out having an extended contract waiting for him to sign. Obviously, I think that he is quite an upgrade over Bogaerts even if it is for just one year. Bogaerts is replaceable imo whether it is by signing Machado or someone else.

Keep Machado at 3B. Move Devers to 1B. THIS IS THE RARE TIME I'D WANT TO DO THIS.

Why haven't the Yankees traded for Gerrit Cole yet? I thought that was a done deal because of all the trade pieces the Yanks have?

That would potentially be an incredibly power filled lineup. I'm going all in though. Martinez in left - Benintendi in center - Betts in right.

That's what I would have liked to happen, but DD boxed himself in resigning Moreland for 2 years. Can DD trade Moreland?

They would have to make room for JD in the OF and have Devers DH........

Or they would just include Devers in the deal. :( :( :(

Oh no - poor Beni gets shipped but I think I know what you did there. With that lineup, we wouldn't even need his bat. JBJ in center is always a good thing. lol

good to dream and when you do - dream big!

That lineup in my dream says screw the NY Yankees!

It looks like the Pirates keep asking for Torres, so far Cashman is holding his ground on this, it looks like the three prospects near to "untouchables" are Torres, Florial and Sheffield.

I said near untouchables because in the right deal nobody should be untouchable, let's say the Angels call and put Trout in the trade block, then is "all hands on deck", everybody is available, including the first team. Again, only a few players in MLB are in that category.

You are a big fan of regression even when there isn't actual regression, lol. Greg Bird effectively missed 5 months. We lost Gregorius and Sanchez for a month. If we have good health, even if 2b and 3b are manned by kids, we should see a far better offense than the geeks are predicting. I also looked at the predictions for Judge on fangraphs. It's entirely ridiculous. They are predicting 38HRs but only an SLG of .518? They're saying he will hit near .260 but have an OBP of .360? This doesn't make sense.

I think the Yankees offense will be a little better than the current Fangraphs predictions. I don't think they'll be as good some people think they're going to be.

And yes, I am a big fan of the concept of regression.

Remember when Josh Beckett won the WS with a complete game shut out in Yankee stadium?

Beckett won a lifetime pass from me with that performance.

JBJ makes up for JD's poor glove.

You heard just as much from me the past few seasons even though I knew my team wasn't up to snuff. This offseason is a little different

To be fair, you have been rather obnoxious. No offense. LOL

For Jacko, it's only "great analysis" if it shows the offense becoming the 1927 Yankees again.

I don't think that it would be imperative to sign him to an extension early.

OTOH, it would stink to give up good players for a one year rental.

@SmittyOnMLB

Red Sox still need to agree to contracts with arbitration-eligible players Brock Holt, Xander Bogaerts, Sandy Leon, Christian Vazquez, Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Joe Kelly, Drew Pomeranz, Eduardo Rodriguez and Brandon Workman.

@redsoxpayroll

Most interesting to watch (with MLBTR estimates):

Pom - $9.1M

Mookie - $8.2M

Bogey - $7.6M

JBJ - $5.9M

Kelly - $3.6M

Depends. I'd give up 2 years of Pablo for one year of anyone.

If someone offered you $125 mil over 5 years to do a job would you feel you hit the lottery? What do players expect now? I worked my entire life in a high stress job that required a great deal of specialized education at my own time and expense and only earned a tiny fraction of that. I'll bet that the majority of posters have had similar experience. C'mon JD, what are you waiting for?

I agree but that is not a popular opinion in these parts I am afraid.

I totally get your point, but if I thought I could make $130M/5, I'd kick the tires before "settling" on $125M.

Me too - My wife and I went to Beans today to buy some snowshoes and boots to go with them. The total cost came to more than 10% really of what one of the mathematically brightest people I have ever known made during his absolute peak earning year - my Dad! Times of changed - some for the good some for the notso. Notso - reminds me of a kid who once played f/ball for me. His last name was Smart. He was good - He was big - but his nickname speaks for itself - Notso - lol - He loved that nickname by the way.

I really do agree with you old-timer but things really have changed. He is going to get paid one way or the other. It will of course be grossly too much for what he does but oh well - I still hope we get him.

A 6th or 7th year. It’s dumb not to hold out for more.

The problem is at that price, who else is in the market willing to go 6 or 7 years?

Steve Phillips on MLB Network seems to think the market is Boston alone....

And what’s the harm on waiting a few weeks? Think the Sox will call your bluff and sign Duda/Bruce/whoever?

This is what makes it hard for me to say exactly how much I'd agree to pay JD to get him.

I'm okay with maybe $135M/5, but not if no other bidder is over $120M/5.

The trick is, how does DD know the best "other offer", or even if there even is another serious offer.

One downside of having your agent start the talks with a $210M/7 number is that some teams may not even make a bid at all.
