Miami paid some of the contract (about $35 million, it sounds like) and took Castro in return, and it still doesn't sound like the NYY had to give up much in prospects. I wonder what we'd have been able to swing if we'd agreed to take the whole contract, no strings attached...but I guess we'll never know.

I never really saw Stanton as our most realistic option this winter (I'm good with Martinez and still think we'll get him), but seeing him go to New York is a real gut punch. Their 2018 lineup is going to be absolutely unreal, and they still have the capacity to make further moves (pitching?). They were already better than us on paper, and this just puts us that much further behind.

We'll be okay...but not a fun day to be a Red Sox fan.

Please stop the Moreland return talk.

It's making me physically ill.

I agree, we need pitching, but without a clear clean-up hitter, we won't compete with the Yanks and Astros and Guardians.

I'd rather re-sign Moreland than overpay for Hosmer.

I think it could have worked - but Stanton had to want to come here. Alas

This "trade" unfortunately reminds me of the Lakers ripoff of Pau Gasol in his prime.

It then fueled another 2 championships for the Kobe-led Lakers.

Judge and Stanton together for the next 5 years? Lord help us!

Oh well - maybe MLB will de-juice the baseballs for next year.

Not the end of the world. Just one more case of the Yankees being the Yankees. That is what makes it so challenging to beat them. And so gratifying when you do.

It is a complete ripoff. I hope that Jeter goes broke in Miami.

Why did MLB allow the sale of the team to people who can't afford to run a MLB team?

This lineup is stupid

It's almost to the point that it's just not fair.

I hate to think this way, but our only hope might be that the injury bug strikes the Yanks for 3 years.

It should be very easy to get a dugout seat for a 2018 Marlins game.

The current projected Miami lineup is not all that bad (even without Giancarlo Stanton and Dee Gordon):

https://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-miami-marlins/

The young Marlin lineup has only two hitters older than 27 years old (and only one over 30).

Ordering a Surf and Turf, the Fish will need to beef up the pitching to improve on a 78-86 club that went 11-22 in the final weeks after being three games above .500 on August 27:

crap happens so they say- Got to keep your head up and push on through. Never know what the future might hold. I don't think the sox are likely to go in to quit mode.

No big deal. The Yankees were probably going to get Harper next off-season anyway. With Stanton on the team, I doubt the Yankees have a spot for Harper. I would rather see the Yankees acquire Stanton than Ohtani. The Yankees need to upgrade the rotation--they can't win a championship with their current rotation. And if something goes wrong with a guy like Severino, they are in trouble.

I didn't want Stanton. I want the Red Sox to target Machado next year for SS.

While the Yankees will be the favorites, the team that wins in December usually doesn't win in October.

With that said, I'm not overly optimistic about the Red Sox, either. I think Dombrowski sucks. Maybe Theo will come back one day.....

The Red Sox would be in a better position if they had Kopech in AAA--perhaps the best minor league SP in the game, together with Moncada starting at 2b (to help with the Red Sox power deficit). Sure, they wouldn't have Sale, but they would go to free agency to address that hole. Sure, without Sale, the Red Sox wouldn't have won the AL East last year but who cares -- they didn't win anything last year anyway.

Our rotation cannot win? We were a game from the WS. Tanaka was a shut down ace in the playoffs. Sevy was 3rd in the CY. Gray is a damn good pitcher too. Our top 3 is solid. Montgomery was surprisingly good and we are loaded with upper level MiLB talent or we just re-sign CC.

I don't like the rotation -- too fragile, too much can go wrong with it. Tanaka will soon need TJ surgery and he had a strange up-and-down year. He is likely going to need surgery sooner rather than later. CC isn't on the team, but he isn't a big deal anyway. Sure, he had a quality season, but he could pitch to the tune of a 5.00 ERA next year and no one would be surprised. Severino was great, but he also threw a lot of innings last year, let's see how he does going forward. Gray is fragile. Montgomery came out of nowhere; I'm not sold on him at all in terms of producing sustained success.

I hope neither David Price nor Masahiro Tanaka requires Tommy John surgery, but who is more likely?

The Red Sox and Yankees should have formidable starting rotations if everyone is healthy.

That's the big "if."

This year Red Sox pitchers posted 23.9 fWAR, including 17.0 fWAR from their starters. Yankee pitchers posted 24.4 fWAR, including 15.2 fWAR from their starters.

Much can happen in the balance of the offseason but at this point the starting rotations appear evenly matched.

Okay I get those points. But then you could dissect Boston's rotation just as easily using the same logic. Sale was great the first two thirds of the season but then turned into a pretty mediocre starter down the stretch, what if that carries into this season? Pomeranz was good but the guy usually can't pitch past 5 innings. Price has had some injury history since joining Boston but even when healthy, he has looked more like a 3/4 than an ace. Rick Porcello is a pile of trash that once won a Cy Young. E Rod has shown flashes but ultimately has been a disappointment to date. Wright is a knuckleballer so who the hell knows what he'll look like when he returns.

See how easy it was to point out negatives and worst case scenarios?

You've just traded for Stanton to play behind Judge You'll have to forgive us when we look for negatives wherever we can. :D

Guys, they’re tanking. Their farm is abysmal and they’re trying to do something about it. They’re going the way of the Astros

Tanking to help the Yankees.

Just last week, all the talk was the Marlins had some "outrageous asking price" and expected teams to take Stanton's entire contract. And they got back two unknown unranked teenagers who probably never see MLB and a big contract AND kicked in thirty mill?

He got nothing back for Stanton. Nothing. Marlins fans will miss Loria.
