Obviously money needed elsewhere? Asking price too high?

Like you said, $17 million a year or thereabouts for 5 years or thereabouts is just too much for a closer.

Yankees owe Chapman 4 more years at $17M per. Is that what's to going to take to re-sign Kimbrel after 2018? May need a cheaper replacement.

Never, ever sign a reliever for that kind of contract.

Yankees usually set the standards. In this case Chapman contract will showcase what NOT to do with a closer.

Unfortunately, that's not the way it works.

I don't know about that.

Several power bats got passed over last winter.

Because they aren't good players.

Encarnacion was thought to be pretty good. He turned down an offer from Toronto but in the end had to settle for Cleveland offer. All I'm saying is he and other power bats over estimated their value.

3/60 isn't anything to sneeze at for a 34 year old DH.

Encarnacion averaged a 4WAR for his last 3 seasons in Toronto as a no D 1b. As a DH, his WAR would have been higher.

EE in Boston would have been devastating. I'm glad he's in Cleveland.

You should brush up on how WAR calculates defensive value for DH's.

That's because there are a glut of DH/1B types out there.

One closer's struggles is not going to diminish the perception that having a great pen is a high priority.

I happen to feel RP'ers are over-rated these days. I would not pay $17M for a 27 year old Mariano Rivera.

Exactly. Papi led MLB in OPS but finished tied for 36th in WAR (with 3 other guys- Cesar Hernandez,

B. Belt & C Yelich). Papi also finished 7th on his own team!

7.8 Betts

5.2 Pedey

5.2 Porcello

4.8 JBJ

4.7 Bogey

4.5 Price

4.4 Papi

There's other more extreme examples of bat first players that totally flopped, even after getting lowballed. Trumbo, Davis, Carter, etc..

yes. See, the way the nfl works is that there is one game in each round. The time constraints are no different than in other rounds.

In baseball, it has always been a best of 5 or 7. In baseball, you win a series not a game. If they want to expand the wc match up to 3 games or more, then it can be considered the playoffs.

this.

I like it for the fact that it gives more credence to winning the division. Before, it really made no difference whether you got in as a division winner or a wild card winner.

GREAT point. and more proof that the 1 game is a playin game to get to the real playoffs.

It has been seen over and over and over again that giving out a large contract to a relief pitcher will likely come back to bite you. That hasn't stopped teams from doing it yet.

It's a one game, playoff play in game.

What a difference between the AL and NL.

The AL Wildcard is wide open. Although the Yanks are 2.5 games up, there are 8 teams within 5 games of the last slot! That's only 3 teams essentially out of it right now.

There's 5 teams with 2 games:

- MN

-.5 LAA

-1.0 SEA

-1.5 KCR

-2.0 TEX

All division leaders are up by 4.5 of more.

The Sox are just 5 behind the Astros for the best record in the AL.

The NL has 2 divisions locked up, but the NL Central is still in play:

- Cubs

-2.5 MIL

-3.5 StL

Milwaukee and St. Louis are farther behind the WC than the division:

+0.5 COL

--- AZ

-3.5 MIL

-4.5 StL

(The Cubs would not make the WC with their current record.)

Andrew Miller and Danny Salazar to the DL.

Looks like aren't the only team with pitchers on the DL.

David Wright begins a rehab assignment. Is it time for him to move to the AL as a DH?

Could he play 1B?

Is he an option for the Sox (assuming the Mets take on some of the money)?

$20M 2018

$15M 2019

$12M 2020

(I'm not saying I want to take on another high injury player.)

Probably right, but his main issues have involved his throwing arm (shoulder).

Maybe he can still hit and/or play 1B.

Again, I'm not saying I want him.

His main issue is spinal stenosis and upper spinal surgery. He's shot.

In all honesty, Wright might not play again, at any position. He should call it a career.

What's the word on A Miller? Is it something serious?

Tendinitis in his right knee. He went on the DL for this already, they brought him off, but obviously it's a longer term thing.
