That's what happens when you trade a pile of prospects like DD did already...they're not an endless supply.

Exactly.

After the the trades the Yankees made to collect prospects, they had a much deeper farm system to work with.

Playing the percentages, you are better off trading anyone outside of top 5. Henry Owens and Blake Swihart comes to mind. Now there's really no market for those two, granted for different reasons.

Devers was a keeper and now we know why.

Groome has a long way to go. I'm just not married to the guy, especially a pitcher.

I would still pursue someone like Votto this off season. Some guys age well and I think he'll be one of those. He can always DH and take Hanley's place when his contract runs out.

Let's also revisit Stanton. Would Betts, Xander and E Rod do it? Their combined salaries will exceed Stanton's in three years.

little man complex you think?

Yes, I'm afraid it might be the dreaded Napoleon complex. About 2 grand worth of visits to a shrink should clear that up for you.

We have 16 guys listed as 6-3 or taller- all pitchers!

Moreland, HRam and Young are listed as 6-2.

Bogey, Swihart and Marrero as 6-1- everyone else is 6-0 or shorter.

We are the shortest team in the league. We have a bunch of elves running around out there, I can see having some small guys around the middle of the Diamond as they are usually more nimble and quicker. Of course, one of our bigger guys plays SS and has no HR power. The game is easier around the rest of the field for bigger guys-- the physics of leverage should not be overlooked. It is not overlooked when it comes to pitchers. Scouts rarely will look at a pitcher under 6'3".

Too old - too feisty - too miserable - too Scottish

I agree with you. I haven't been to Portland this year but I was stunned at seeing the difference in size between ours and theirs last year. One of the reasons Moncada looked like such a monster, was the rest of the troops looked so small. I was really surprised at how small Benintendi looked.

Sox are 10th tallest in the league.

Another instance where the advanced metrics are misleading/wrong. This table includes pitchers, and we have some monsters on our staff. Our position players are the shortest in the league. I will go out on this limb without researching. If I wasn't clear, I was only talking about our position players. Our pitchers are on the tall side.

Chavis is only 5'10". Is that tall enough for 1b?

maybe for little league.

my 11U firstbaseman is 5'10. he better grow a couple more inches this offseason if he wants to hold down 1b next year as my 12U.

Guys under 6':

Hammerin' Hank, Mays, Mantle, Ott, Cey, Garvey, Yaz, Yogi, Adrian Beltre, Pudge...

Should height matter for 1b?

Certainly not if you have forearms like Garvey.

height at first base doesnt matter if all your infielders, pitchers, and catchers throw to your chest. i'll take the guy who can stretch it out and save E's.

When most of those old timers played, a 6 footer was considered tall. And for most of their careers Mantle and Yaz were listed as 6' on their baseball cards. Those were the big guys.

Yet their were exceptions like Boog Powell and Frank Howard.

Those guys were giants back then.

Amen brother!

Bottom line is dave does not have a strategy or plan. He is a fireman, who spends whatever it takes to put out the fire.

To put it another way, I think desperate/planless dave has a prison fetish.

Because he seems to enjoy getting raped by every guy he deals with and he keeps letting it happen over and over again!!!

Dombrowski has a plan, it just does not include the long term.

I like Votto, but I would stay away from that contract.

It's likely in a couple of years that we would be saying the same things about Votto that some people are not saying about Hanley.

Height certainly helps. All other things being equal, I'd take the taller player for that position.

Ill take all the Mookie Betts and Jose Altuve's of the world. Height really doesn't matter that much.

Amen. And Dustin Pedroia's.

So with Pedroia out, that cancels out Nunez as far as more hitting. Maybe thats why they went after him because according to JF, his leg has been bothering him for a while...
