Holds are more important than Saves to me. 1 Reliever comes in with a 99 % with no Runners on base the other in critical situations. With the hold situation you need a Strike thrower, walks or throwing to hitter counts will kill you.

I am not a fan of either the Hold or the Save stat.

But at the same time, it's not really fair to the bullpen guy if he comes in with the bases loaded and no one out, and induces a GIDP, and a run scores, and he be charged with anything.

Once again, DRA. It's a relatively new stat so it hasn't caugtht on yet (and may never catch on), but it takes all of that into account. Its creators know that giving up a run on a bases loaded GIDP is not the same as giving up a run on a 2 out, man on 1B double.

This is true. I wouldn't charge him anything for that. MLB has ppl to keep track of that though, i would think. If they have people to figure out a non-typical Save (tying run reaches the on-deck circle), they could figure this out. :)

One of the reasons that I'm not a fan of the Save stat. I remember Papelbon being charged with a blown save in a similar situation in the postseason.

Just plain stupid. The classic example for me is the blown save Rivera got tagged with in 2004 Game 5.

Where would we be without Kimbrell?

Considering that the Sox are missing key arms from their bullpen the production has been pretty good. T-burg is done for the year, and am not sure when or if Smith is going to pitch. With that said, not sure bullpen production can keep up this pace.

Joe Kelly to DL. well... that sucks

I just read that. That's huge. Workman up I think.

It's a good sign that Scott looked good last night.

im sure DD is after RP, but our bullpen is starting to take in water.

Man, these pen injuries are killing us.

I'm almost certain that a pen arm is a high priority at the deadline (or before).

The reliever wouldn't be charged in that case....

Why is a bad pitcher like abad still on this team?

What complaints could anyone possible have about Abad this season? Dude doesn't pitch that often but when he does he's been mostly good. 2.89 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, batters are only hitting .235 against him (LHH are hitting .194). He's also had two very clutch performances where he pitched 2 innings in extra inning games and got the win (@PHI and vs STL).

He's been very solid, especially as what? the 5th option out of the pen?

I agree. He's a back end if the pen guy. Overall he's been fine this year. He's been in 28 games and allowed a run in 7 of them. That is decent for most relievers, let alone a 5th-6th option.

Unfortunately, many can never get over first impressions. He came in last year less than stellar and there are those who will never give him any positive words because of that.

Workman will be brought up today as our BP in depleted and probably we need another. Anyone has a guess on who the second one will be?

I see Austin Maddox has just been brought up but know nothing about him other than he is a 26 Year old right hander and is 6' 2" and weighs 220. He was invited to ST for a look.

@PeteAbe

RH hitters vs. Heath Hembree:

2016: .201/.255/.336

2017: .272/.306/.456

Kelly on the DL, Scott to AAA. They need to deal, and soon

I think they should just rotate some more AAA arms up and see if any stick. Hembree is just awful right now.

I forgot his name but it may have been Maddox. He looked good the other night.

I prefer this approach to spending big bucks or chips on "known" relief arms. There are exceptions, of course.

Austin Maddox. He's pitched well this year and is on the 40 man roster.

Red Sox announce moves: RHPs Kyle Martin and Ben Taylor up, LHP Brian Johnson and RHP Hector Velazquez down.

Calling HV up for last night was a great call.

First call up for Kyle Martin. From SP:

Martin has a huge frame, listed at 6-foot-7, 240 pounds. In the outing scouted, his fastball sat 91-94 mph. His best secondary pitch is his changeup, which shows plus potential at 80-81 mph. He has strong feel for the pitch and throws it with deceptive arm speed. The pitch shows late drop and has bat-missing ability. Martin will also show a below-average slider in the low-80s that he added this season, but he throws it sparingly in short stints.

Yesterday Farrell said that Workman finally has recovered from surgery and is back to what he was.

I think this is really good news.

He looked really good his last appearance. His injury is a big shame.
