1) Lin has proven nothing, except that he's a decent fielding IF'er.

2) Hernandez is a good defender at 2B and a decent SS.

3) We don't need anyone to play CF. We have 3. We simply put some one in LF and move Beni to CF.

4) Since Nunez can play LF, we don't need Brentz.

I guess I don't see why we get all convoluted to make room for Lin & Brentz.

Nunez, Holt and Hernandez or Nunez, Brentz and Hernandez look just as good or better.

If Pedey goes down, and we need Nunez elsewhere, I like Hernandez at 2B more than Lin, Holt or Marrero.

If Bogey goes down, I like Hernandez and Lin about the same. Holt and Merrero are behind both.

3B? Maybe Lin is better than Hernandez, Holt and Marrero.

As for who is the best defensive OF'er, it's a choice among evils. Holt and Nunez already have ML experience there..

Hernandez is NOT a decent 2B. We can say SSS, but in the SSS we have to go on, he's a poor fielder.

Because Brentz is hitting lefties even better and is much cheaper.

I don't think so. Brentz is hitting over .395 this year against Lefties?

Posted (edited)

Brentz is hitting .308 with 8 HRS this year against Lefties, Rusney is hitting .395 with 6 HRS against Lefties. Sorry, I'm with Rusney on this.

I know a lot go by OPS

Rusney has a 1.085

Brentz is at 1.059 this year, against Lefties.

My whole point is no need to look, you have a kid in the Minors. It also sends a message through out the Minors, if you work hard, you get an opportunity with the Sox, Front Office doesn't pull your pud, and go outside organization. Rather have our own home grown kids, anyway.

I know if I was kid, or VET, Minor Leaguer who has done everything for promotion, and Sox keep signing FA's, I would get out of organization. No need t work hard, it wont matter.

Rusney should be given every opportunity next year to win the 4th Outfielder job. You have to be an idiot to worry about the contract, when a guy is hitting to the tune of .395 against Lefties this year, and proved in Triple AAA he is doing his job, in CF. He is the Pawsox best player this year. Your suppose to be promoted when you do things like this. Sox are paying his Contract one way or the other. MAYBE he can earn it.

Brentz or Rusney no need to sign anyone in Off-season for 4th Outfielder.

I would absolutely give Rusney a chance next year. The tax penalty will reset, so putting his salary on the books won't be as big a thing as it would be this year. He might be a little expensive as a 4th outfielder, but if he can hit like he's been hitting this year, it's worth it.

At the very least, perhaps he can recoup some trade value.

For next year, I agree with you completely. For this year, it isn't happening. The Sox are not going to go over the tax limit at this point in the season, unless something drastic happened, like 2 of our 3 outfielders having season ending injuries.

My view on FA's is this, I'm only signing a guy if we are weak at that position, and the kid you have in the Minors is a few years away, and your really not sure he has Major League potential. Otherwise it's promotion within for me.

The luxury tax added by adding Castillo to the roster would be carried over for 3 years. The 3rd year might be a 50% tax.

Once you add Castillo to the 490 man, you're locked into counting his salary for tax purposes until the end, even if you knock him back off the 40 man, if he sucks.

It's not a disqualifier, but it's not as simple as just looking at 2018.

Brentz and Castillo both have very similar OPS vs LHPs this year, so I'm leaning towards Brentz right now, if I had to choose between just those two.

I doubt both will be on the 40 man roster next year.

Move him pay 80% of his salary then, get a so-so Prospect. No need to tie up an Outfield Position in the Minors, where another kid could get the chance. That's stupid too. He's in limbo because of his salary move him, otherwise now your making 2 mistakes, on 1 player.

Minor League numbers he put up this year, teams would take the chance, providing the Sox foot the bill.

Castillo: 1.085

You're right. Brentz is about the same as Castillo, but much much cheaper.

If we trade Castillo, and he is on another team's 40 man roster, we will be luxury taxed on the amount we are paying of his remaining contract.

Why pay more than we are now?

Joseph Heller would appreciate a Catch-22 like this one.

Yes for Castillo not for us.

Our choice is simple, IMO.

I'd have to be a hell of a lot more certain that Castillo will do better than Brentz to add Rusney to the 40 man roster and face a $10.4 total luxury tax over the next 3 years combined.

hahaha Only 1 other way, he does things so dynamic in Spring Training, that they will look like cheap f***s, not to make team better. 10.4 million combined for 3 years that's chump change, what's that 3.5 a year? And they are worrying about that?

Is this right the Dodgers are paying 33.585 million this year in Luxury Tax? Wow! Just read that including this year, the Dodgers will have paid over 100 million dollars in Luxury Tax in last 3 years.

Yeah baby. Take that, Cliff.

Good start for Trey Ball, but call me when has a good season and not just a good game.

I mean, guys are late bloomers and put it together, but I've mostly given up on his prospectidum.

Posted
They should see if Ball can still hit.

There's still a much better chance that Ball is a late bloomer and can contribute to an MLB club than him ever contributing as an MLB hitter.

0.01% to 0.001% chance either way.

YES! Trey Ball, the Red Sox 2020 opening day starter. I'm starting to believe again:

Unfortunately, that is true at this point.

0.01% to 0.001% chance either way.

And what quantitative methods did you use to come up with these statistics?

I believe trey ball has major league stuff.

Once he gets the legs, hips, shoulders, arm, wrist and head all working in unison on a repeatable delivery, he will be a devastating major league pitcher.

Posted
Ball didn't develop as the sox had hoped. He had a big arm, but he seems to have lost his power. Last I heard, he was topping out low 90s. If he's low 90s with that frame and his complete lack of command, he isn't making the majors

I am hopeful beeks gets a chance in a couple of weeks to pitch in Boston.

He or Johnson has to be a better option than fister.

I'm not saying he shouldn't get a shot, but he could easily be worse than Fister.
