According to some info I read on soxprospects, the Red Sox are expected to introduce Chavis to a few different positions in the offseason and then decide on which one would work best for him. Chavis will likely spend the 2018 season in the minor leagues playing that position and strengthening his defensive skills.

If they can get him to play a solid 2b, that would be so advantageous for the organization. You can always find a 1b, but 2b are harder to find and Pedroia might not be able to handle the position for much longer (knee). Like others, I tend to think he profiles best as a 3b or LF, but the Red Sox are set at those positions. . . .

Good points. I was thinking 1B all the way.

He can't play 3B well enough anyways. LF is blocked. 1B is easier to fill, but it is our high need area.

When's the last time MLB has seen a legitimate 1B-2Bman two position guy?

Brentz is a minor league FA this winter. I'm not sure he'll be back on a team with an OF so stacked.

He'll sign with a team like the A's and have a real shot at winning a starting job that might spring-board him to a higher-paying contract later on.

Don't we still have a few years of team control left? how does that work if he makes the MLB roster? With the year he's had, and especially if he has a good September I think the Sox would give him a legit shot at making the 25 man next year.

Even if we add him to the 40 man roster and call him up, I believe he'll still be a FA after this year- not even rule 5.

His situation does kind of beg the question: why not give him one last chance?

A September call-up might be too little-too late.

(We can extend him before he becomes a FA, but why would he do it on a team with 2 lock-ed up OF'ers?)

Well he has zero options left, but they do have control left, no? I believe as long as he'd stay on the 25 man roster next year they'd have him for the min. They can't send him down to Pawtucket though so if I believe another team could scoop him up if the DFA him. I'm not entirely sure on the rules here.

I think he has already earned free agency due to his years in the system- no matter what we do this year short of re-signing him.

I also thought that the Red Sox retain control (of Brentz) if they place him on the 40 man roster. Minor league free agency is for those who are not on the 40 man roster. With that said, maybe a player has to spend a certain amount of days on the 40 man roster to block minor league free agency and Brentz won't qualify due to the fact that he hasn't been on the 40 man roster at all this year? Don't know.

he's on the 40 man but he has zero options left. I'm going to have to look into this but I believe as long as he's on the 25 man the Sox keep him.

He will probably show up to spring training, and if at any point the Sox don't think he will break with the team they will release him and he can sign somewhere else.

He is NOT on the 40 man roster right now. If we add him, he won't become a minor league FA. (I got that wrong before.)

He's not rule 5 eligible, so that the 25 man roster thing you are talking about does not apply.

He's been in our system since 2010.

From soxprospects.com...

The following players will become minor league free agents in November 2017 unless they are added to the 40-man roster or re-signed.

Jeremy Barfield, Brian Bogusevic, Bryce Brentz, Dan Butler, Ryan Court, Jacob Dahlstrand, Matt Dominguez, Conrad Gregor, Shawn Haviland, Williams Jerez, Kyle Kendrick, Deiner Lopez, Heiker Meneses, Edgar Olmos, Mike Olt, Mitchell Osnowitz, Tim Roberson, Jose Sermo, Aneury Tavarez, Herny Urrutia, Elih Villaneuva, Marcus Walden, Jordan Weems

Ok, ok...so he has to be added to the 40 man. But he's out of options, so he can't be sent back down to pawtucket without accepting an assignment? but if that's the case can he still start the season in Pawtucket?

I don't know about his options.

My guess is, if we add him to the 40 man roster, he may become a rule 5 player.

He will not be a Rule V guy if added to the 40 man. Players are exposed to the Rule V if they are not on the 40 man and have enough minor league service time. Brentz will become a minor league FA if the sox don't add him. If they add him to the 40 man, then he comes to camp with Boston. If he is out of options and the sox try to send him down, he'd have to pass waivers

Thanks.

We will have a 4th OF'er slot open next year, but my guess is JF's love child, Holt, has the inside edge on that opening.

We may just let Brentz become a FA, but I don't see how it would hurt to DFA Selsky and add Brentz to the 40 man roster. Bring BB up in September and take a long look at him in ST'ing. Maybe we can even trade him, if we can't find room on the 25 man roster.

We won't get much in trade.

Sox would be stupid letting Brentz go, with Chris Young probably gone.

Last 5 years hitting against Lefthanded Pitchers, in the Minors.

2017 .308

2016 .295

2015 .266

2014 .303

2013 .272

He can hit Lefties good enough, for the salary. Another team will see this and sign him. I would take the gamble to save the salary, to use in other areas.

I would too. If that experiment fails, it shouldn't be too hard to trade for a platoon bat during the season.

If his role will be to only start vs LHPs in LF or DH, then his numbers look good, but who will he start for? We can see now how Young, one of MLB's best hitters vs LHPs over the last 3-4 years, is being squeezed out of playing time. If Pedey wasn't injured, I doubt Young would play over Nunez, HRam or Beni vs LHPs.

Also, we always go into these things looking for someone who kills lefties, and then we end up playing them ve RHPs more than we wanted due to injuries. Sometimes, it works (Cody Ross), sometimes it doesn't all that well (Gomes struggled at times as Young has this year).

I'm not against giving Brentz a shot at the 4th OF slot next year, in fact, I'm not for signing an OF'er this winter, but maybe a guy like Nunez, who can play LF, if needed.

Better stat: OPS splits vs RHP/LHP

Brentz in minors

2017 .850/1.035 AAA

2016 .621/.930 AAA and .690/.598 AA

2015 .656/.767 AAA

2014 .698/.765 AAA

2013 .789/.785 AAA

I would like Nunez back too. Time to move on from Holt. Like Holt's style, but seems Nunez would provide more Punch, with the same Versatility. Salary is the problem. Brentz should get a shot for what is needed as a 4th Outfielder. It's mostly against Lefties, and occasional start against Righties for rest for others. Looking at value. Edited by OH FOY!

We could have a 4 man bench like this:

C Leon

IF/LF Nunez

IF/OF Holt or OF Brentz (Castillo)

IF Hernandez (Lin or Marrero)

Lin can play CF if needed. Combined, Nunez and Lin could cover all defensive spots except for C. It would be enough to sneak Brentz onto the roster. I would like Hernandez more if I thought he brought a glove to the field.

1) Lin has proven nothing, except that he's a decent fielding IF'er.

2) Hernandez is a good defender at 2B and a decent SS.

3) We don't need anyone to play CF. We have 3. We simply put some one in LF and move Beni to CF.

4) Since Nunez can play LF, we don't need Brentz.

I guess I don't see why we get all convoluted to make room for Lin & Brentz.

Nunez, Holt and Hernandez or Nunez, Brentz and Hernandez look just as good or better.

If Pedey goes down, and we need Nunez elsewhere, I like Hernandez at 2B more than Lin, Holt or Marrero.

If Bogey goes down, I like Hernandez and Lin about the same. Holt and Merrero are behind both.

3B? Maybe Lin is better than Hernandez, Holt and Marrero.

As for who is the best defensive OF'er, it's a choice among evils. Holt and Nunez already have ML experience there..

Rusney is absolutely crushing Left Handed Pitching this year. How can you not use his bat in Sept?

The Red Sox are not adding $35 million to their payroll for 30 AB's in September.

Posted (edited)

Rusney should be given every opportunity next year to win the 4th Outfielder job. You have to be an idiot to worry about the contract, when a guy is hitting to the tune of .395 against Lefties this year, and proved in Triple AAA he is doing his job, in CF. He is the Pawsox best player this year. Your suppose to be promoted when you do things like this. Sox are paying his Contract one way or the other. MAYBE he can earn it.

Brentz or Rusney no need to sign anyone in Off-season for 4th Outfielder.

Read an article that Rusney lost 15 lbs. and brought his family back from Cuba, including his children, and he is different man this year in the Dugout, great Teammate. People don't realize how much distractions, affect a Player. New country, different language, customs, and no family to fall back on, if your struggling.

Check out this HR last night to Right Field, guy got Power.

Maybe next year. Definitely not this year.

Because Brentz is hitting lefties even better and is much cheaper.
