And then there's the old "hidden potato trick". I think John Wockenfuss in the Tigers organization was the last one to use it.

After a pitch and with a runner on 3B Wockenfuss threw a baseball-sized potato into LF in an apparent attempt to pick of the runner. When the runner saw the "ball" go into LF and down the line he broke for home...where Walkenfuss was holding the baseball ... and tagged the runner out

Walkenfuss was then ejected for making a travesty of the game. Don't ask me where he got the potato.

Any player who tries that, even a Yankee, will automatically become my favorite player forever.

After yesterday's game, can we add "2 HR game by a pitcher" to this poll?

Former Sox pitcher Rick Wise can top that. When he was with the Phillies, Wise pitched a game where he hit two home runs AND threw a no-hitter.

He should've gotten a stockpile of potatoes, and then made French fries for his teammates once he got ejected.

I just hope he wasn't hiding that tater in his draws!

How about a switch-hitting catcher hitting a 3-run jack to win it in the 12th?

One of the beauties of this game is that rare stuff happens all the time.

Just curious

Inside the park HR

Straight Steal of Home

Anytime an outfielder brings a homerun back

For the sort of rarer things, the 17+ strikeout game (which has happened about as often as perfect games)

How about a 0-0 game into the twelfth inning at Fenway. That doesn't happen to often.

How about not allowing a runner to reach 2nd base?

Forgot about that. That to me is amazing. Great job by Sale and all the relievers.

Jen mccafrey tweeted out today first time in 100 years the sox didn't allow a base runner to reach 2nd in an extra inning game.

Interesting tidbit via @SoxNotes: Yesterday was first time in 100+ years Red Sox pitchers didn't allow a runner reach 2nd in extra-inning gm

I have to give props to Pittsburgh's young starter Taillon also. He did a very nice job as well

Hes going to be a very good pitcher for years. We need to start developing these type of pitchers.

I'm giving my head a good hard shake. Please clarify this. Are you saying that a runner has reached 2nd base in every extra inning game the Sox have played in for the past 100 years? If so our bullpen has been worse than I thought! (and I don't believe it)

Yes. When do you see a game when a runner doesn't reach second almost never happens.

I think she meant over the course of the entire game. 9 plus whatever - nobody gets to second. That is pretty unusual.

Ahhh.... that makes sense now! Thank you.

I look to something that I know I could never do. I'm not a pitcher whatsoever, so I'd say a no hitter/perfect game.

NOTHJING in baseball puts everyone on the edge of the seat like the ninth inning of a no-hitter or a perfect game. It might be the only time the home crowd fans will cheer the opposing team and boo their own players for getting a hit...
