52 pages now on the rotation and 0 pages on the bullpen.

The pen has surprised me. I knew we had a lot of promising arms, but with Thornburg and Ross out, I'm impressed with how well this pen has come through so far this year.

Red Sox announce they've recalled Hector Velazquez from Pawtucket and optioned infielder Deven Marrero back down.

Probably up for long relief in case Johnson doesn't go too far tonight. The bullpen has amassed 27 innings over the last 7 games (11 the last 2 nights and 15 2/3 the last 3).

I guess Pablo lives another day.

Assuming Johnson is going on the DL, I'd give Hector Velazquez an opportunity to hold down the 5th spot in the rotation. He was pitching well in AAA.

Minor league results only count for someone who was signed to a huge bonus and look good in single A.

I am very disappointed that you did not realize this! :P

I agree, and we really have no other options right now, but I have very little confidence in Velazquez going forward despite his recent record in AAA.

I have heard that he is not close to coming back.

Not good.

I hope like hell Velazquez can come through for us, but I'm not too optimistic.

Another big test for Porcello tonight. Let's hope he can pitch at least as good as Pom just did. We need to see some signs of hope. Go Rick!

I've been one of Porcello's biggest supporters since day one.

Something has gone terribly wrong.

He's totally lost it.

I'm not sure what we need to do to have any hope he turns it around.

I saw an interview with him at the beginning of the season that concerned me. He talked about changing his approach after coming from the Tigers and he mentioned that he had some issues with the adjustments to his approach and that it snowballed and got into his head. Last season (2016), he was building confidence from a series of successful outings. This year these bad outings seem to be affecting him mentally. Maybe he needs a minor league rehab stint to find himself.

I've been a Porcello skeptic from day one. I wish he could prove me wrong for more than just one season.

Porcello says he knows what's wrong but has been unsuccessful fixing his problem....whatever that is.

This is getting serious. It's not about depth but it's about quality depth. E Rod returning would be a big help. I just hate to make another trade and empty out the farm again.

We must keep Devers and Travis. They can give us 6 years of team control at corner positions.

Moon what do you think of trading Hanley after the season (maybe eat half of his contract) and re signing Moreland for 2 years at $20M to primarily DH and play some 1B? Or is that an overpay?

Hanley's a tough trade at any price. He's a mediocre and injury-prone DH.

Yeah, I was just hoping....who would pay $10M for used up DH with no power?

Speaking of rotation......where would this team be without Sale? Or Kimbrel? Or Moreland?

Not having Shaw has stung but we had to give Pable one more look, didn't we?

IMO the problem here is that we've had trouble defining what "a look" is. Is it a couple of games or is it until the AS Break?

I feel like this team is hanging on by a thread as it is and putting Sandoval out there for a month as "a look" could play us out of contention, not to mention increasing the price we'd have to pay for a trade deadline 3B.

Sandoval simply cannot be allowed to play this team out of contention with his mediocre offense and less than mediocre defense. I don't see Rutledge/Marrero/etc. as the answer but I do see it as a better answer than Sandoval.

Sandoval appears to be all or nothing type right now and his all is sadly average at best.

I hate his plate discipline. He doesn't hit the ball, rather the ball hits the bat. He just looks so non athletic playing 3B.

You are correct, he can't be trusted. He just needs to go at some point.

I am also one of Porcello's biggest supporters since day one, and without the benefit of hindsight, I would give him that extension again in a heartbeat.

I'm no expert, but I think he is trying too hard rather than just pitching. Someone pointed out that he's throwing his sinker too hard, and it's not sinking. He says he knows what the problem is, but he hasn't been able to fix it.

Perhaps a couple weeks off (phantom DL) to correct his problem would help. If I'm not mistaken, Porcello was pretty good after coming back from the DL in 2015.

On a somewhat optimistic note, his K/W ratio still looks pretty good.

I don't think you all need to worry about Sandoval. IMO, Rutledge will get the bulk of the playing time at 3B. Farrell and the FO have more or less already sent the message that they've given up on Pablo. He will remain mostly on the bench (in case of injury to Rutledge) until the FO finds a replacement.

IMO, we'll see Devers sooner than we and the FO expected.

Is this right? That is a huge hit.....

The thing I was looking forward to the most this year was our starting rotation...... and counting on it has been what I can imagine russian roulette feels like while playing

Barring a trade where the Sox give up basically nothing, this is probably true.

Devers would make sense because if things don't work out, it can easily be undone by demoting him. Trading for a stopgap doesn't have this advantage even if you keep the receipt....
