Do I sense a conspiracy here? I'm still thinking that Hernandez makes the team regardless of what becomes of Rutledge.

Its a strained hamstring on Rutledge. Depending on how serious it is, it is up to a 6 week injury. Someone will need to be in that spot, whether it is Selsky or Hernandez. The complications include Moreland being sick with the flu and Rameriz still dealing with his strain. Love to see Hernandez, but he doesn't play 1st.

I was thinking warm Mountain Dew.

;)

Horrid. Uncarbonated, warm Dew is the grossest thing ever.

It reminds me of waking up in my college dorm and just nursing a hangover with whatever was left out from the night before.

This. Selsky probably makes it and plays opening day at 1b. It'll be a good trivia question a few years from now.

Pablo should play 1B at some point in his career, but too late now to think of that.

Holt has played 1B before.

Swihart might have been the best choice, but he's on a catcher - only plan.

Like Reggie Smith in 1967?

Somewhere I heard or read the Sox want a utility infielder capable of playing shortstop. Holt is pretty weak there. Hernandez can play the position but is nothing more than a placeholder. Ditto Rutledge, who has an options advantage over Hernandez. Selsky has no shot at short.

The long shot here might br Deven Marrero, although he can't hit. ..

If it's Selsky we have our platoon partner for Moreland, but that only leaves Holt who can backup 2nd, short and third. If we keep,Hernandez our only backup first basemen is Holt, not ideal. Best case is Hanley is able to play 1st and we keep Hernandez.

I will argue Holt does a horrible job as a second baseman and isn't any better as a shortstop.

I thought 2B was the one position Holt was a plus defender.

I'll take Hernandez at SS over Holt, Rutledge and Hernandez at 3B over Holt, and Young or Selsky in the OF over Holt.

I still think trading Holt would get us a decent RP'er and open the door for Hernandez and Selsky (and maybe Swihart eventually) to show they can shine on the big stage.

Holts value is that he can play every position but catcher and pitcher at an acceptable level. That is extremely valuable to a team.

You might get some value in a trade that would further the argument of making it sooner than later if that becomes the long term plan.

I get that, but now that we should no longer have a DH only DH (once HR can play 1B again), that value is slightly diminished.

I might also argue that the term "acceptable level" is debatable.

Over the past few years Holt has been the number one sub at several positions. Now, it is arguable he's the number one sub at any position, except maybe 2B. That has diminished his value to us, not because he has decline, because he hasn't, but because we have better options at 3B (Rutledge & Hernandez and eventually Devers), SS (Hernandez), maybe 2B (Hernandez), OF (Young and maybe Selsky), and 1B (Moreland/HR and mayeb eventually Pablo moves to 1B to make way for Devers).

Holt is fine. He had a career low BABIP last year. Just keep him away from 3b because he's terrible there.

Farrell said Sox will wait until Monday before deciding who replaces Pomeranz on the roster. Likely a reliever if Pomeranz looks OK for 4/9

@TimBritton

Farrell on Pomeranz: “It’s become more and more clear he’s not ready to begin the season.”

The flu has claimed Chili Davis and Steve Selsky.

Damn, he was looking like their last hope to play first base.

(EDIT: I guess Selsky could, too.)

Kyle Kendrick is pitching today and again Tuesday. He would be available for that April 9 game in Detroit if Drew Pomeranz is not.

Nah, I don't want to come across as negative. I'm sure he's fine and is really ready to go! He's going to make me eat crow for sure!

The problem is that's the position we most likely will need him to play other than maybe 1B to start the season.

Holt's bat abs BAbip is not my concern. He's just not all that good on defense anywhere. This whole "adequate at 7 positions" is over-valued.

He's third string or worse everywhere but maybe 2B, where personally, I'd play Marco over Brock.

We could go with 11 pitchers to start the season, since we have the day off. Then, when Pom comes back, we'll send Selsky or Marco down.

The Red Sox announced today that lefty Drew Pomeranz will open the season on the 10-day DL due to a flexor strain in his left forearm. That does not appear to be a new injury, though; instead, the club is lining him up to pitch as scheduled while opening the door to carrying an extra player to open the year.

We shall see. Not sure why you'd stake your reputation on a guy like Pom though.

Your dislike of Holt could be considered unhealthy.

Gut feeling. And my gut has never failed me other than that bout with gastritis.

When we traded for Hanrahan, I said Holt was going to be the "jewel of the trade". I like Holt as a second baseman, but we have one of those inked to a long term deal. I value his ability to play 7 positions without being an embarrassment, but I have always believed he could be a starter for 5-10 teams in MLB or be a Zobrist lite. To me, that's not "undervaluing" him or "dislike"; it's just a realization that his value elsewhere is probably more than his value here in Boston, especially since our bench has improved over the last couple of years with the additions of Young, Hernandez, and the emergence of Swihart as a possible non catcher.

I'm not for handing Holt away for someone like Abad. If we can't get someone good for him, then I'd be happy keeping him.

In short, it's not a dislike for Holt, it's really me always being very high on Hernandez and Young. I just can't spread my love evenly.

Good explanation I was just kidding around. I agree with you that Hernandez should be the better version of Holt, just to bad he can't play the outfield.
