Really? Chris Heston? The one who has but 38 games under his belt in his three year career? The one who pitched for the Giants last year and had an ERA of 10.80? The one the Giants traded for a PTBL just before they DFA'd him? That Chris Heston?

If you think guys like that are a better investment than a player like Buch you should fill your roster with them. Good luck with that.

That's the guy (and his 2016 ERA in five innings).:)

Seattle continues to look for a veteran starting pitcher to push Chris Heston down from his current No. 6 slot on the starter depth chart. The Mariners hope to do better than Clay Buchholz but we'll see how the market plays out.

We can agree that 14 Chris Hestons would not be a wise allocation of roster slots.:)

Agreed, but not even for one Chris Heston and 13 nineteen year old Chris Heston prospects not on a 40 man roster.

The Red Sox will trade Buccholz for salary relief as he is redundant.

If the Sox have to kick in a significant portion of his 13.5 million I suspect they will look for something they need in return like a platoon corner infielder who can hit LHP.

If they get zero salary relief and/or nothing of value back they will keep him as a swing man.

It's simple

What about 13 Clay Buccholzs???

175 tied up in the pitching staff? Which after the most dominant 6 weeks in baseball history all go on the DL.

Your team as a whole is over the luxury tax and all the pitchers are on the DL forcing Trey Ball to the top of the rotation

They could also trade Buch for a prospect, in order to replace a tiny fraction of what was traded away recently.

With the salary relief, they could sign a corner IF'er, RP'er or just keep the money for a deadline trade, if needed.

I think we should keep our expectations very low of what we will get back.

I am. I'm expecting no more than a decent far away prospect. It's the salary relief that brings the most value.

68 is the new "52," especially when you have a wife still in her late 30s 😬

When they say 68 is the new 52, what they mean is you're still 13 years away from retiring.

And having a wife in her late 30s to a billionaire like Henry means he's just that much closer to having an ex-wife who just turned 40...

Ha! Can't argue with that.

Lol.

True!

Hill knows this. He has wanted Buch from the Sox, because he knows he could have a great year and get hem to the playoffs. He also knows he could suck or get injured, so he doesn't want to give up much to get him. He's got a point, but I don't think he values Buch as much as the Sox and I do.

A Seattle blogger took this away from his conversation Friday with Mariner GM Jerry Dipoto:

Biggest one first. I asked him about looking for a starting pitcher, and specifically if they had asked Boston about their surplus of pitchers. I mentioned Drew Pomeranz, and he said they called Boston after the Sale trade and asked about him. Dombrowski said they are 100% not trading him. First of all, I'm surprised Jerry was that willing to talk about something like that, I wasn't expecting much of an answer. We both agreed Bucholz isn't where they want to look, so no Red Sox trade it seems. I would have liked Pomeranz, but oh well.

But if you put none of them on the 25 man and all of them on the 40-man, it will make call ups a lot more fun...

Mitch Moreland added $5.5 million to the Red Sox payroll while a trade of Clay Buchholz for Seth Smith would have cut the Red Sox payroll by $6.5 million (without taking up an added roster slot).

your freakin' high.

Clay will pitch like an Ace all season long. i guarantee it.

Over the Monster columnist Ben Buchanan today discussed the reported Red Sox demand in a contemplated trade of Clay Buchholz to the Miami Marlins:

The Marlins turned down the offer, according to the Miami Herald:

The article hints at the Sox not looking to pay any salary and get a decent prospect in return.

"We’ll see if the Red Sox can pick up someone like Castillo in the days to come. It’d be a solid get for a rental like Buchholz, but the market for starting pitching is so dry that they’re in a position to ask for a bit more than they normally would."

I was actually not expecting a projected top 100 prospect for Buch, so I think my position seems supported by this artcile anyways.

My thoughts exactly. You posted while I was reading the article. This supports what we were saying all along.

Yes, this is the worst FA SP'er class I can remember. Some big name pitchers might be traded, but as we move towards the end of free agency, or as teams lose pitchers to injury, all we need is one GM to get desperate enough to overpay.

We keep overpaying for pitchers, I'm not sure why we can't expect some GM to overpay for one of ours.

The theory would be that we get a prospect plus something significant with the money saved.

I generally admire the work of Over the Monster's Ben Buchanan but caution that this conclusion comes from a Red Sox-centric columnist. Buchanan's bias is neither better nor worse than the bias of the typical SB Nation columnist.

Here is the account from Scott Gelman, an SB Nation columnist for the Miami Marlins:

http://www.fishstripes.com/2016/12/12/13923278/marlins-discussed-clay-buchholz-trade-with-red-sox

I have seen no report that the Marlins made an offer for Clay Buchholz. I have read one report that the Marlins declined a Red Sox offer of Clay Buchholz. I am not sure whom to believe in this age of false news.

It should be interesting to see how the market plays out.

I almost hope they trade Buch soon, just to find out if I was right or wrong about his value.
