Guys sign MiLB contracts for two reasons. One is opportunity. Guys who are signing minor league deals now are picking spots where they might be able to produce. Second is desperation. Once those teams with the apparent opportunity dry up, a player will sign with whoever wants them. We are in the opportunity phase. Speaking of which, I'm surprised more guys like Kendrick haven't migrated to the Bronx. While we're definitely going to give the kids a look, it isn't unreasonable to think that a veteran could get hot and snag a spot in the rotation

The thing about signing with the Sox, is that if you are good (meaning better than Owens, Johnson and Elias) you only have 2 guys ahead of you (the 5th and 6th starters). Teams like the Yanks have a lot more of 7-10 type starters to compete for the 7 slot.

True, the likelihood of the Yanks using 10 starters is higher than the Sox (with equal lost time for injuries), but I really think the Sox competition for the 7 slot is maybe weaker than most teams.

But these guys aren't signing to be #7, they're signing to crack the top 5. There's no chance that happens in Boston. There is a chance it happens in NY if they beat out the other kids for a spot

OK, if the pitcher thinks he's good enough to crack the top 5 for opening day, then you are right. I'm talking about the pitchers that aren't good enough to start for anybody on opening day but are better or equal to Owens.

This reminds me of a Julian Tavarez story. After played for five teams in 2008 he eventually signed with the Nats for 2009 - who had lost over 100 games in 2008. During Spring Training he was asked how it felt playing for the Nats after having plaed in MLB for 15 years.

"When you go to a club until 4 a.m. and [are] just waiting, waiting, a 600-pounder looks like J-Lo. And to me, this is Jennifer Lopez right here. It's four in the morning. Too much to drink. All the girls look hot. So the Nationals are Jennifer Lopez to me."

That's desperation!

The deals for Tyson Ross (Rangers) and Brett Anderson (Cubs) look decent ( 1Yr/$6M, 1Yr/3-$4M respectively, Incentive-laden).

Big question marks about their health, but if they can get well quickly, then they could be the steals of the FA market though the incentives would kick in to lessen the "bargain".

That's way too much for Ross, imo.

now that I think about it, would theses guys take MiLB deals? Not even sure they could. Or could they have taken major league deals and started off in AAA?

I doubt they have options remaining to be put in AAA without exposing them to waivers.

I guess they will start on the DL and be given lengthy rehab periods.

Yup. Anyone who is looking for the opportunity to crack a rotation isn't looking at Boston. Dombrowski said last week that they were having a hard time convincing those types of guys to come here.

True, but sooner or later reality will kick in and any job will look better. And really, anyone who signs with Boston is potentially one Spring Training injury away from a spot on the opening day roster. ..

Ross will disappoint unless Texas suddenly decides to play their home games in Petco. Tyson Ross is overrated and the less desirable pitcher of the two brothers. ..

If a pitcher is just looking for an opportunity, they are going to look at teams where the 4/5 spots seem to be up for grabs first. Boston already has 6 guys who would make most rotations in baseball right now. It's certainly not an ideal spot for a guy hoping to re-establish his value.

They should be able to bring in some depth at some point, but a Tyson Ross or Brett Anderson higher ceiling type isn't going to sign with the Sox.

Ross actually had good home away splits in 2015.
