He's going to be significantly beyond prime when his contract expires.

He's going to cost money and possibly restrict future signings and/or extensions.

He's going to cost a draft pick at a point where we may need every pick we can get.

I'd love to get EE, Justin Turner and Jansen, but we are not the Dodgers East. If Henry wanted us to be, we could, but he doesn't, so we won't.

A 4 year contract would bring him "significantly" past his prime. I don't agree with that.

I think most see prime as 27-31 or 26-32. EE will turn 34 next month. In theory, he should have already been declining.

One could say he's past due and could decline quickly, but one could also say he's showing he can age well.

Papi broke all the rules on "past prime", so it's impossible to project, but a 4 year deal would men he plays while 34, 35, 36 and 37.

All the years fall outside of traditional "prime" years, but I guess "significantly" is up for discussion. It certainly is a concern or should be.

What don't you like about EE? He's not Ortiz, but he does have some consistently excellent numbers.

It's not EE that I don't like. It's the contract that comes along with him.

He is definitely already at least a couple of years past prime. He may hold up better than others, but his age is most absolutely a concern.

Me too.

The years on the deal are second.

Being RH'd is tied with age as the 3rd concern.

I regret to report that an apparent administrator labeled me a troll at the Red Sox website Over the Monster.:(

In a September 4 game thread, a poster had made fun of the last-place Athletics celebrating after a walk-off win against the Red Sox. "Lol celebration last place must be so good," the poster wrote:

http://www.overthemonster.com/2016/9/4/12794362/game-136-red-sox-vs-athletics#comments

I responded that the A's celebration was reminiscent of a celebration of a last-place team a year ago and provided a link to a video of a walk-off celebration by the 2015 Red Sox. In a post soon thereafter I wrote that "Last place teams need a reason to celebrate" and provided second link to a video of the 2015 Red Sox celebrating another walk-off win.

My posts elicited this response from Over the Monster:

At that point I decided that Over the Monster and I were not a good match. Over the Monster posts are often filled with profanity but void of substance. I like to think that my posts are quite the opposite. I have not acknowledged the warning and will not post there. Over the Monster is a great site for a poster who wants to swear profusely.

I visit many baseball message boards, but excluding Mariner forums I spend more time on Red Sox boards than on all other forums combined. I have concentrated on the Red Sox just as a person studying a second language does not necessarily study all languages.

I first came to a Red Sox forum in January 2006 when the Sox were rumored to be interested in Seattle outfielder Jeremy Reed as a replacement for the departed Johnny Damon. I wanted to compare how Red Sox fans and Mariners fans valued Reed ... and of course the valuations were much different. Through the process I gained a better idea of Reed's value.

I know my ideas will be subjected to scrutiny when I post on a public forum. I am grateful to the many Red Sox fans who through the years have challenged my contributions in a civil manner ... and even those who have been less than civil. The discussions have made me more knowledgeable about the game I love.

Peace be with everyone this holiday season.

What the hell do they even mean when they use the word toll? You are a Mariners fan who makes very sensible contributions here. Jackson whatever is a Yankee who also enlightens and brings a lot to the table. We have a couple of people here who claim to be Red Sox fans who only post to incite, argue, and in simple terms to be *******s. They must be domestic trolls right.

Thank goodness they are not regular posters and have not been here long. This is a great site. Stay with us and keep it coming.

Slav, it is puzzling that the sox went for the Bugatti when they already had Bentley's and Maserati's in the rotation, yet they replaced Ortiz' stretch hummer with a Hyundai Elantra

It's not really that puzzling, if the Sox really don't want to pay a fortune in luxury tax. They know they're going to lose some run production but they should offset that with run prevention.

It did surprise me some, but I've been talkin CWS trades for months.

I love pitching and D, so I'm really excited.

the length of contract and $$$ that will be attached to it. David Ortiz was unique. He is irreplaceable. and he was a bargain. i would prefer we save the $$$ and we go the rotational DH route. i love how our pitching staff is shaping up and value pitching much more than DH.

Ortiz shouldnt even be a car in your analogy. there is no one in the history of the game even close to being like him. so there is no car.

At this point his getting 4 years isn't a sure thing by any means. Would it change your opinion at all if he'd accept, say, a 2-year deal? I'm not advocating for it necessarily, but we are in a slightly different situation than we were before the Sale trade (no longer have to worry about fitting Moncada in, and the only bat that's close and would conceivably be "blocked" is Sam Travis). The luxury tax and 1st round pick remain points in the "against" column, of course.

If he'd agree to a 2 year deal, which I don't think he will, then it makes signing him look bettter, but I'd still say no. We have arb raises to look at next winter, and the FA class next year is strong. We'll know more about Devers and Travis by then.

Tazawa signed by Marlins-- 2 years/$12 million

Good for him.

I have always liked the guy.

That does seem like strong money but what do I know?

Talk is that deal Guardians are offering for EE could be for as little as 1 or 2 years. If that is the case, DD should swoop in and scoop him up.

I heard the Guardians said they weren't interested.
