I have always been up and down on JBJ. Glad the GM didn't listen to me and trade him for a bucket of balls a few years ago. With that said.......if the proposed deal for him and Sale were true.....I would have done that in a heartbeat. Price, Sale, Porcello, Wright, Pom?? Yes please......

It may have been Bradley and three or four other prospects involved.

I'm pretty sure that you are right. That being said, I very well might have been willing to pull that trigger for numerous prospects. I mean really - they are great prospects both Benintendi and Moncada as well, but they are still prospects. JBJ is not. He is a very valuable mlb player.

Being dropped down in the lineup has been good for him. It's a good piece of mind. He can relax a little bit and not press. Without any injuries he should bat down there and continue to rake. Just being steady and consistent is the key. If he struggles with the bat , his glove is always there.

I have always liked Jackie batting 9th. Farrell should just leave him there.

It depends on what the other pieces of the package were. My guess is that it was far too expensive.

Dombrowski has shown that he's not afraid to pay hefty prices for quality pitching. The fact that he didn't pull the trigger pretty much tells you the asking price was unreasonable.

I seem to remember the talk with the Guardians about Carrasco or Salazar last winter also centered around JBJ, and that was before JBJ's solid 2016 season!

It's clear other GMs value JBJ highly. It's hard to understand why so many posters have ridden the fence on this kid. I guess some read into pro-longed slumps more than what it is.

He is a gold glove quality outfielder with very good speed and a great arm to boot. His hitting is good and he has the power to be a 25 home run guy. He just needs help correcting his batting issues to pull him out of slumps. My guess is that he will improve year to year and be excellent for us in years to come. Under no circumstances should we trade him.

Totally agree. I'll add that he's a deceptively very good base runner.

I think he will have 30 HR power by 2017 or 2018.

I'm okay with slumps, as long as he has the red hot stretches to go with them.

Probably, but now I'm questioning my own sanity because I'm not sure I'd even trade Bradley for Sale straight-up. At this point we're talking about a stellar defensive CF who's pushing 30 HR and 100 RBI with an .860 OPS and 4 years of control remaining (compared to Sale's 3)...that's an insanely valuable player.

i would not trade him! He very well might get even better.

Trading Bradley can work because the Sox have one of the league's best options to replace him (Betts). But you have to get quite a bit - personally a guy of Sale or Quintana's caliber is a fair return (for Bradley and a prospect or two)

We are Red Sox fans - we can agree on that? if we did not have Porcello and Price, I think that the story might be a little different. We have them.

So is a Cy Young caliber starter with 3 years of control - and there is a fair reason to bet on the under with Bradley - although I think there is no question he is a fine player.

Not me. JBJ's defense isn't going to get any worse, at least for several years, and IMO there's at least as much chance to bet on the over in his offense as bet on the under. Every time he takes the field, every day, he has the potential to save a one or two run game for you with his defense. Without Papi's offense we're going to need that.

Completely agree. I've always felt defense is more reliable than offense of pitching.

JBJ by month

April - ..807 OPS

May - 1.175 OPS

June - .804 OPS

July - .839 OPS

August - .597 OPS

He has only had one bad month, slumps happen. Lets relax a little bit.

Funny thing is that his production from July ( hitting .298/.350/839 ) 28 H, 18 R, 6 2B, 4 HR, 12 RBI, 7 BB

isn't that much off from his August numbers ( hitting .198/.274/.597 ) 21 H, 16 R, 4 2B, 5 HR, 13 RBI, 9 BB

We have the nucleus of a great outfield now, I am happy with a gold glove outfielder who can hit as well as JBJ and is not fragile.

And he has not had the best defensive season of our outfielders. Bradley is terrific - but Betts has the tools and demonstrated performance to have no meaningful dropoff there. Any time I say "Bradley is tradeable" it says nothing about my opinion of him.

Doubt they could only give up JBJ for Quintana.

Me too. It would probably take JBJ, ERod and Swihart. I might give 2 of the three then sign Beltran to 2 years and hope Moncada can play LF by the time his contract expires.

Bradley is a 5 WAR player at a prime defensive position up the middle. You don't deal that. You keep the killer B's, use the rest of your farm to fill out your needs.

Thank you Doc.

I think that a lot will depend on how the post season goes. My guess is that they'll try to lock up one or more of Betts/Bradley/Bogaerts this offseason. I get the Boras thing, so Betts might be easier, but who knows? Bogaerts & Bradley are both very intelligent kids, so they'll make the final decision.

I definitely don't see them spending 100 plus million on anyone this winter, including Encarcion, unless it's extending players who are already here, especially if they win it all.

My hope is that they at least try to lock up as many of Betts, Bradley, and Bogaerts as they can. Love these guys.

bingo!

wait wait wait - One of the things I am saying is do not trade Bradley for anybody. We have Price and Porcello - not a bad start. Personally I still count benintendi and moncada as prospects. I would trade either or both a long time before i would trade any of the 3 I previously mentioned. If someone was willing to give up a top quality young ace for prospects plus second tier players, i could live with that if the return was great enough. i'm beating the tired old drum here and I realize I might be on a bit of an island but if they replaced Papi's bat with top quality and did nothing else I would be ok with it. i truly believe that having the big bat in the middle of our lineup makes them all better hitters.
