We will. I will trade a 17-18 kid for an established major league starting pitcher almost every time. It is just too long to wait and too much development that a teenager needs. Unless the guy is 6'5' throwing 100 mph, I will take the major leaguer. Espinoza doesn't have either of those attributes.

We are on the same page. Throw in the fact that we are talking about a guy who was 27- 6'4 or 5 - is left handed and can throw it. I liked what the scouts said about Espinoza but I go with the bigger player just about all the time.

You have to develop major leaguers, you just have to, if you don't it's very hard to field an MLB team. Now with that said, it's important to remember that prospects are assets, and sometimes you trade them for something you need more. I feel kind of bad saying that because these are actual people but this is a business and that is how it plays out.

So I'm fine with trading, what worried me was the excess of trading prospects and the long-term ramifications that it will bring.

With that said this trade is starting to look much better for the Sox and that has everything to do with Drew being healthy and pitching better.

yes, and I'd argue it's after the 2019 season.

Could be, but I think we might go way over the limit in 2020 for a one time major penalty, so the window stays open for one more year.

You are worried about the 2021 cliff?

4 years ago, our GM was worried about 2017. That's one reason we are highly competitive right now.

My guess is every single GM has 2021 on their mind as some sort of a significant priority. If they don't, they should be fired.

But he was inept to prevent the cliff in 2014 and 1015.

So it was Theo's fault?

Partially, but I wish Theo never left.

Theo, himself, said he got away from what was best for the team in the long run.

I liked the trade when it went down. Made sense. Pom had a rough start but seems to be becoming a reliable 2-3 type. Ill take that for an 18yo (now 19) small framed pitcher with promise. Who has been dealing with elbow issues all year.

The trade I was opposed to all year, and even said it on this forum that it was DD's worst move, was travis shaw. Just handing the job to Pablo was ridiculous. Theres no way Holt or Marrero were getting thay FT spot. Just dumb.

I think that you views are very reasonable here.

Drew Pomeranz is a number 5 starter. He gives you 5.1IP a start and usually spends a ton of pitches per inning. He limits runs, which is good for you guys, but he is a bear on your pen. I get the trade. You deal for a guy who looks good now for a kid who might be great in the future. If Espinosa does end up dominating 3-4 years from now, but Pom is a key contributor during your window, then most sox fans would probably not give a s***.

I'm no big fan of Pomeranz because I think he doesn't have much of a repertoire--fast ball, knuckle curve, and the occasional cut fast ball, but almost never a changeup which should be lethal for a lefty starter in a universe of righty bats--and really not that great control.

Season to date, you're right, his numbers ain't so hot, especially innings per start (5.1) and quality starts (8 in 17 starts). But he is 9-4 and in his last 5 starts has given up a total of 6 earned runs while averaging 6 innings per start. In his last 5 starts our stud Sale has averaged 7 innings per start but given up 9 runs. Price has given up 11 runs and averaged 6 innings in his last 5 starts. Porcello has given up 17 runs in his last 5 starts.

The simple fact is that we badly needed that 4th/5th starter this season especially with the injuries to Price, Wright, and Eduardo Rodriguez. So, really, it's kind of hard to gripe about a 9-4 pitcher in a 50-38 season to date even if he did cost us Espinosa.

We are also missing the great Moncada, who cost us that guy Sale.

This is the most important thing to me. How has he done RECENTLY? Some pitchers find their stride later in the season than others as they learn more about their pitches and how/when to use them. Over the past 5 games he's looked more like a #3 in a #5 spot and like some other situations on this team, I'm willing to ride this horse until he drops.. if he does.
