It's easy to get excited and overly enthusiastic about a player like Beni. I think he will do well for the most part, and I agree that he will give us better overall LF production than we had last year.

The fact that he has gained 10 pounds by working on his body bodes well for additional power. He has a beautiful swing and could wind up with 15 home runs or more this season. The kid is doing all the right things so far.

The pen has to prove itself...for me anyway.

I like what we have on paper. Barnes and Kelly are still question marks to me, as is Thornburg.

I think they will work out their roles and the pen will become a strength, but for now there are only a lot of questions besides Kimbrel.

Too many questions, if you ask me.

A lot of promise, too, but that's why I think the pen is our biggest concern, as of right now.

I hope bulking up doesn't mess up that sweet swing.

185 is not particularly bulky. I see it as a part of maturing and getting stronger. By contrast, the latest picture of Pablo shows he is still carrying considerable weight. Hope he can handle it as he has always played with a stocky build.

Yeah, I didn't mean he was the Hulk now, but adding bulk can take away from some physical skills.

There's a reason marathon runners don't lift weight. I know that's a poor comparisons, but going from having lean muscles to even slightly more bulked up muscles could change a swing (to the good or bad). That's all I meant.

I'm not predicting trouble just because a guy adds a little muscle mass.

There is a lot of hype surrounding him, which could become overwhelming for a young kid. He seems to be handling himself very well. I think he'll be fine.

I am glad that we all agree that Beni will handle the pressure just fine. :)

Now, if we could all agree that Pablo will bounce back and be fine...

Sorry - has nothing to do with baseball but it does have something to do with something I actually know a little bit about. The best marathon runners in the world do indeed lift weights. They are not trying to gain weight and probably couldn't if they tried. You would be amazed at the number of weight control exercises that a real runner can do. total body fitness really is what it is all about.

Temper your enthusiasm on Beni. A successful first year is an OBP of .350 and double digit HR. He's young and he's a rookie.

Maybe I'm just a homer, but Beni has me as high as I've been on a prospect since Mookie.

He's going to be the Rookie of the Year...that's all.

Could happen.

Gotta love the six killer B's....

Bogey

Bradley

Beni

Bustin Pedroia

FanGraphs Depth Charts, Steamer and ZiPS project Andrew Benintendi with 2017 OBP of .339, .338 and .341, respectively, along with 12, 10 and 12 home runs:

The 2017 WAR projections come in at 1.9, 1.4 and 2.1 while the wRC+ is projected at 105, 104 and 106.

Exactly harmony. Temper the enthusiasm. Everyone posting in this thread seem to be expecting prime Ted Williams. Let the kid figure out being a rookie first. One of the most important lessons a rookie needs to learn is the initial adjustment. That's when big league teams figure out a weakness and try to exploit it. Beni hasn't been around long enough to have one

How much enthusiasm do you have for Gary Sanchez?

I believe Beni has the better hitting tool we will see. That is an enthusiastic projection to me. See how teams adjust to him.

Maybe my expectations for Beni aren't as high as some people's. I'd be moderately happy with a WAR of ~2 for a first year player, although I do think that's close to being his floor.

I'm trying to stay objective, but I really can't see a healthy Beni coming in under 2.5 this year.

I think he'll be closer to 3.0 than 2.5, and it wouldn't surprise me one bit to see him finish higher than 3.2.

Gary has more power, but I don't expect him to continue his insane pace set last yr. I'm thinking .270-.275 20-25HR and high RBI totals mostly because he'll be hitting third in our order

The services harmony used for Beni have Gary with 25-27 HRs, 77-90 RBIs and a BA between .255 and .274. Maybe an average of about .264 26 84.

I agree that it's always good to temper expectations with young players, but based on what I've seen & read about him, it wouldn't surprise me if he put up big numbers this year.

Supposedly nothing rattles this kid. He was having lunch with Brian Johnson the other day and he knew he'd be facing him the next day. He told Johnson that he was taking him deep, which he did on the first pitch Johnson threw.

Everyone talks about the "swing," but his plate discipline is advanced as well. There will be some adjustments, but I would be disappointed if he only hits 10 to 12 bombs as those projections above indicate. He has a ton of power for a kid his size. We'll see I guess.

I think that he has the potential to have a great career. The only worry I have abut this kid is whether his body holds up over the long haul. He really has never been injury prone but he isn't as big as he is listed. If in fact he put on 10 pounds then he is closer to the weight listed for him in last year's Portland program - 175. He looks good, fit and strong. If he doesn't wear down, everything looks like he could be a real good one. I know that some people like to compare his build and size to Mookie but they just aren't put together the same way.

I think that's about right. We wont see the .300 50HR pace he was on for sure!
