It doesn't take a player that steals 30 bags a year to know you don't take a big lead and draw the pitchers attention.

Wright wasn't going anywhere until there was contact and then he has to run until he's out. Any player with any level of experience should be able to handle that.

Wright was dumb for taking more than one step off the bag and Blanton was a dick for throwing over there.

I get that, but I'm not sure it makes any sense putting Wright out there if he's not much more likely than Ortiz to score on a single and certainly more likely to screw something up.

The difference was that Wright can probly run without grimacing.

Some of you guys really do love Farrell. Some of his hate is unwarranted, but there is no logical reason to pinch run your best starting pitcher in a close game there. Wright himself admitted he most likely wouldn't score on a single, despite the fact there was two outs and "hoped" he could score on a double. He had literally no experience running the bases in the MLB ever, him injuring himself while taking a lead on 2nd was a clear indication of that.

I'd hope Farrell's reasons were a little more, but maybe that was it...

it definitely wont be on his coaching highlight reel for his next job.

I just don't get why we didn't go with a younger guy, E Rod....I don't care if he pitched the day before or schedule to pitch next day...tell him to stop at 3B......

He's a terrible manager.

Price gets a win thanks to the offense coming back to life. Good, not great outing. Mostly good numbers, but gave up 10 hits in 8 innings. I'll give him partial credit.

Has the most starts with at least 6 innings pitched in the league.

Being able to pitch a lot of innings does have its value. Price was not dominant, but he was good enough to get his team the win. Just as important, he spared the pen which has been in somewhat of a shambles lately.

Had we lost 3-2, posters would be saying how an ace is supposed to gut out games like that.

We scored early and often, so who cares, but the fact is, Price put us in a 2-0 hole before we exploded, so I'm still worried about his ever becoming our true "ace".

We have a good staff, 3.68 ERA in the 2nd half(AL ranking), only .05 separates them from 2nd place. That could happen if our defense didn't take a dive recently.

Porcello, E-Rod, Wright, Price pitch a lot of innings too. But it's downright shameful the offense and the bullpen has s*** the beds.

Our starters have more or less gotten the job done since the break. Our recent struggles have been the fault of the offense squandering away opportunity after opportunity and the BP implosions. The BP implosions might not have occurred had the offense been able to break some of these games wide open.

At $30M and with his history, I'm looking for both.

Me too, but it would be nice to see him dominate from the start of a game even if he only goes 6.

We always struggle on west coast swings, so let's hope we do better on our next one. I'm not worried about our offense too much.

Our pen is a different matter. I realize injuries have been a big part of the pen's poor performance, but our pen looked strong and deep to start the season. Many had our pen ranked 3rd to 5th best. Currently we have the 11th best RP'er WAR, but we're 15th in WHIP at 1.31.

Our pen is 29th in GB/FB at 1.03

Yeah, I'm not saying he's CY worthy, just that he's not "trash" like people are saying.

Let's see what Buchholz, with his new mindset, can do today against the D-backs. Does he revert to form and put the Sox in an early hole, or does he go out there and gives a sterling performance for six or seven innings?

And if the latter, does JF pencil him back into the starting rotation going forward?

Second half? Cherry picking. Small sample size. 38 games -- take your pick.

If Buch's new mindset works, we still need JF to get a new mind.

Maybe the recent performance level is the "real" Sox staff.

Onlu lasted a little over 4 innings tonight and giving up 3 earned runs in those innings. He has looked good in relief but his start highlighted Buchholz problems.

Can anyone please tell me why one would leave a reliever in long enough to walk the bases full?

By the second walk, shouldn't it be clear that the fella doesn't have his grits together that particular game?

Posted

Problem with Buch is that he wants to show off all of his pitches. His change was not working except for once but he insisted on throwing the pitch for balls.

Also at some point, when you have a #8 hitter batting .210, don't you just pitch to contact instead of attempting to paint corners three times with three different pitches? Clay is DUMB. That's why he'll never succeed. Oh he'll have stretches of good run like a guy at a black jack table. Ultimately that guy will give back the money to the dealer and go home broke.

Clay was not great, but his job was to get through about 5 innings and keep his team in the game. He accomplished that.

After the 2nd walk, there was a lefty coming to the plate. Farrell did not want Ziegler coming in to face a lefty.

I've always thought that Clay should be told that he's not allowed to shake off the catcher and that he's not allowed to throw over to first base unless told to do so. In other words, no thinking for Clay on the mound. IMO, he's way overthinking things, which is never a good thing. Let the catcher and the dugout do the thinking, and let Clay just pitch.
