Actually, he did get lit up. Didn't the "ace" Price go 7 great innings the other night and then get hammered in the 8th, after which this board lit up with people saying that only dumb manager like Farrell would have brought out Price to pitch the 8th even though he had only thrown 89 pitches.

Actually the main complaint was that he left Price in too long in the 8th, not that he started the 8th.

Your recollection is correct. It was after the single after the home run in the 8th inning that most of us new that he was toast. UN's blind cat knew that he was toast after the second single. Farrell did not.

I would like to point out that many also knew that Price was toast after the 7th inning of last night's game.

Half-blind, but still.

You would be wrong. No one thought he was toast last night after 7-- just wouldn't have used him with the big lead. Get your facts straight.

Welll... I wouldn't go so far as to say that I thought he was toast after Inning #7, but given how #7 went, with Mookie robbing a HR and the DBax making better contact I was of the opinion that if Price answered the bell for #8 I'd have someone up and lightly warming.

I thought he was looking a little gassed, but the lead was big enough to send him out for the 8th. My issue was that there was no reason to push the pitch limit with him last night in the heat. The game was bullpen proof.

I think it wad absolutely the right choice. Giving the bullpen a night off is a big part of why Price is supposed to be the ace.
I agree. It was just a very oppressively hot night. Also, there is probably no salvaging our pen with rest. We need arm transplants

And who are these "many"?

I'm not one of them. I was on the fence about the issue but stated in the GT that I would take him out. Today I justified my opinion by expressing concerns about usage over the course of a season and preserving potential performance for later.

I suppose I am a Farrell hater as well.

it's a very convincing argument each way........ at the moment I called leave him in............but I could see giving Price a rest......

but Tazawa is broken in the pen... been hearing Kimbrels still hurt........ I'd say give them the rest............

Price should give his money to Wright.

Porcello should keep the money he is making.....

Buchholtz should give his money to Price..........

and Wright should give his money to Buchholtz.....

My bad. You thought he was 'a little gassed', not that he was toast. The point remains, however, that you were not confident in his ability to get through that inning.

I did not think that it endangered the outcome of game if he went out for the 8th inning. That was not my concern. As I said before, I think could have pitched an inning. The game was in the bag. My concern was overtaxing Price unnecessarily. Edited by a700hitter

Not at all Spud. I have no problem with anyone questioning a decision that Farrell makes. Many decisions are questionable, which is not to say they were wrong, just questionable.

However, the blame that he gets for some things is not warranted.

There's definitely some confirmation bias. Once you've become convinced that Farrell is incompetent, you will tend to find incompetency in everything he does. I've been subject to it myself lately.

No doubt Bellhorn. We are all guilty of it to one extent or another.

But not unexpected in this town and market. If anything does not go well his position will always be a lightning rod for criticism.

It's kind of been off the charts recently........... from you specifically....... tone it down will ya....

Nice!!!

While I agree Farrell is no game-changer and does make questionable calls, he's not killing this team. You mean this board doesn't have an unreasonable lynch mob?

No, it's not unexpected. That doesn't make it right though.

LOL The unreasonable lynch mob can be found in the game threads on almost a nightly basis.

I can't think of another Sox team that I've experienced so many WTF moments. At least when they came in dead last, they were simply just bad.

Barnes starts the 8th inning with a 6-3 lead and walks first 3 batters. Or Kimbro walking 4 straight batters in a save situation before getting bailed by Barnes. We trade for Abad for the purpose of shutting down one left handed batter.....gives up a 3 run shot to Cano in his first appearance. It just goes on and on. The problem is THEY ALL TAKE TURNS DOING IT. Now that hitting has settled down to norm, this is a very vulnerable team. Quite frankly, no lead is safe, except when Porcello is pitching.

And I swear I can see John Farrell muttering..."WTF?" to himself with that dumb look of his.

But the problem there is the bullpen, not the manager.

A good bullpen can make any manager look like a genius. But that doesn't mean having a bad bullpen makes the manager an idiot...

I shall tone nothing down! This board is one of the few places I can assert my existential freedom to be a jackarse once in a while! :)

I think it was Whitey Herzog who was asked what was the difference between a good manager and a bad manager and promptly answered 'A good bullpen'.

Also, notin said it. No cred here?

I mean, you aren't even certain if Herzog said it. You KNOW I did....

Actually I do know Herzog said it. But from now on when I mention this I'll say 'Whitey Herzog and notin'.

It seams the Sox are having a lot of WTF moments that Farrell has his hands on. If the Sox miss out on the playoffs it could cost him his job. He is not DD's guy so it wouldn't take much. I mean using your best SP as a pitch runner and having get hurt is at the top of the list, but there are other WTF moments that make you shake your head.

I believe you mean "notin and Whitey Herzog". That works better
