I'm staying up for tonight's game and will be sure to post ALL of my thoughts in real time.

A700, I'm coming for your post total.

I'm sure we are all waiting with bated breath for that.

Will you at least keep them game related?

Nope, don't want someone questioning whether I really enjoy those Rob Levine dressed as a Red Sox player commercials or not. https://www.roblevine.com/

Hindsight or not. Farrell was slow to react in a game situation. Was there any reason for him not to pop out of the dugout after the Zunino HR to settle him down or ask how he felt or inquire if his leg was stiffening up after getting hit with a liner an inning before? He just sat there and let circumstances get out of hand. Again, I will state why he reacted too late in going to the pen. He handed the ball to the pen in a situation where an infield single or a walk and a couple of productive outs would tie the game. That is not much of a margin for error.

I think you guys are ignoring that, when Barnes came out and struck out the only batter he faced, the score was 4-2 and men were on 1st and 2d. The game at that point was not out of control. Indeed, Farrell then had the option of keeping Barnes in or bringing in Abad to face Cano. Most would agree Abad was the better choice and in fact Abad got 2 strikes on him before missing his target and putting one in the center of the zone (or so I've read).

The night before, I think it is worth noting, Farrell had a very similar situation in the 7th inning when ERod had been cruising. He got the first out on a grounder, then have up a single to Cano and a walk to Cruz. Then a visit to the mound. Lee then doubled, scoring Cano and moving Cruz to 3B. ERod out, Ross in, and Ross hits the first guy to load the bases. Then, however, he struck out the next two guys to end the inning with the Sox down 1-0. Later Hill homers in the 8th and Betts in the 9th to win. No outcry, none, on that game thread about how slow to react Farrell was, about how he should have had at least two guys warming up when ERod went out to pitch the 7th, about how the pitching coach or Farrell himself should have run out to the mound immediately after the double by Cano, especially in a 0-0 tie game.

And why was there no outcry Monday night? Because the Sox won the game. Because Ross got out there in time to stop the bleeding and, after hitting a guy, struck two out. Last night Barnes did his job, but Abed did not. To me Farrell did his job too--both nights. But one night the bullpen excelled (in their own way) and the other night the bullpen did not.

No, I didn't overlook that. Yes, Barnes saved his ass for 1 batter, but that doesn't change the fact that he went Barnes too late. And if Abad got a DP from Cano, we are not having this discussion, but I would still think that Farrell took too long going to the pen. Edited by a700hitter

if Farrell doesnt have at least 1 guy warming if the leadoff guy gets a hit tonight he's an idiot!
He might be. I will let you know, since you don't know much about late inning management.

Farrell got the pen going as soon as Martin singled. IMO, that was an appropriate time to do so. The next guy got a hit on the first pitch. Willis did go to the mound at that time to settle Price down and to buy some time for the pen. I agree that Farrell probably reacted a little too slowly, but that inning unraveled very quickly.

And it is a manager's job to slow that down. Like I said, you would never catch LaRussa would never get caught with his pants down like that.

Agree, The fact of the matter is Price threw 7 shut out innings and the manager, pitching coach should be looking for any tell tale signs that the pitcher may be tiring. I'm not a monday morning quarterback on this issue. I have expressed my opinion many times about Farrell. Even if we won the game he should of got the hook right after the hit after the homer. I'm not faulting him for who he brought in etc., but again I think his game management too many times is awful.. It was also a joke how some sports writers had neg. press on Price for the game. He pitched real good and should of left the game after 7+ innings allowing 1 to 2 runs. I'll take that all day long.

Frankly all the arguments about whether the manager screwed up or not are one of the things that makes baseball so interesting. Nobody can really prove that they're right, because the alternative outcome is unknown.

Yep, and whether an opinion is hindsight or not doesn't invalidate the opinion. The issue of whether a manager made the wrong move or not doesn't depend on hindsight or foresight. Managers are always second -guessed -- even years and decades later. We know that the manager made the wrong decision last night, because his team lost, but what we can never know is whether there would have been a different outcome if he had done things differently.

You are wrong.

Everyone here has conceded ( at least to themselves ) that the BDC guys have by far the largest penises.

I, for one, know my place.

Thanks for the civil response. Am I right in saying that the Sox are paying Price $217M ($30M/year), that Price shut down the Mariners for the first 7 innings on 3 hits, no walks, and 5 K's, that going into the 8th Price had only thrown 89 pitches, that Price left the game having thrown 98 pitches, fewer than he had thrown in the previous six games, and that our bullpen has not been all that reliable?

Im sure ill get crap for this but...

The other night when Barnes was painting 98 on the outside corner to a power LHH and handled him nicely, why in Gods name do you lift him? I understand the friggin numbers and all that, but Barnes was ON. It was a dumb move to lift him IMHO and I said it as it was happening. Even said I didnt care if Abad did good because it wasnt neccessary. They made up their minds before the game and no matter what was going on Abad was coming in. Farrell said so after the game. Why waste Barnes then? Just bring in Abad from the start...this whole L on L or R on R thing is way overblown. Barnes was a starter not 2 years ago. Pretty sure he can get LHH out too, as he did with Smith before Cano took the Lh specialist out of the park...ugh.

Farrell just LOVES all the numbers, a little too much IMO. Need more of a balance. To me, He just doesnt seem to have a great "feel" for in game managing. especially pitchers.

just one mans opinion.

You know from the bdc forum that ive never been a big Farrell fan. but luckily we dont have to really bash the guy. Just give it time and he will make another head-scratching move, or non move....

The team is starting to look like dead meat. I wonder how close Farrell is to getting the hook.

I'm not sure I'd hang too much of that loss on Farrell. With both Pedey and Hanley out and without our "regular" LF'er and 3B'man (if we actually have either of those!) I thought going into the game that it was going to be a throwaway game. Maybe the most important factor in that game is that we were facing the best pitcher the M's could throw out there.

Porcillo did a better than respectable job only giving up three runs on four hits although he did prove Eck wrong ("solo home runs don't kill you"). As they say, tomorrow - or rather today - is another day. We need to get our regulars back on the field. Then we can blame Farrell for losses again. :)

I purposely stayed away from the game thread last night figuring you would act like a petulant child. I see from a quick perusing this morning that I was correct.

As for talksox version 2016, who would have thought that a newbie like me could have such influence over this board.

Well they hurt you if your team can't score. Porcello was very good last night - 3 bad pitches knocked down an excellent performance to just good. Bullpen can't complain about workload this week so far.

That is the most whack logic I've seen in a long time.

I'm not really blaming last night's loss on Farrell. What's more concerning is that the team is 26-28 since June 1.

it is perfect logic. I can't help that you can't process it. The team lost so Farrell's moves didn't work. What we don't know for sure is whether the team would have won if he had gone to the pen earlier. We do know that the outcome could not have been worse if he had. We also saw demonstrated last night the proper way to manage the late innings. A single by the #9 hitter prompted the Seattle manager to go to the pen with a 3-0 lead in the 8th inning with 1 out and iwakima was at 97 pitches. He didn't let circumstances spin out of control.
