None of those are very significant - all of them are very good. Ties are pretty darn significant.

I would be very comfortable with any of them coming out of the pen.

Keep in mind that Rivera's numbers encompassed the peak of the steroid era, Papelbon's a little less so. Kimbrel is pitching in a lower OPS era.

Right, but the point here was about closers performing worse in tie situations.

Also there is the question of statistical significance since there are vastly more "lead situations" than ties - it's a bit of a chicken and egg thing. You keep the pitcher in a glass container - then there won't be many alternate uses to draw from.

Now could protecting a tie not be as amping as protecting a lead? Maybe - but it is hard to see. Often when the announcers talk of the closer letting down it is coming in to a blowout. A tie is still pretty high leverage.

So far this team can win with Farrell. They appear to be a cohesive, hard playing ballclub having fun. Does anyone want to give Farrell even a smidgen of credit for this? I do. Great job, John. You are a champion both on and off the field.

Coming into this season, I was on the fence about Farrell and said that I would wait until the end of this season to decide. At this point, he deserves a lot of credit for the way the team is playing. I questioned some of his early moves, particularly pinch hitting Young for Shaw, but perhaps Farrell knew what he was doing because Young has looked pretty good recently.

I think a manager giving his players that little vote of confidence goes a long way. Farrell, for the most part, and Tito both do a very good job of that. Some people call it being too stubbornly loyal, and maybe it is sometimes, but when the players know their manager has their backs, it goes a long way over the course of the long season.

My philosophy is you don't make changes when you're going this good.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Farrell is pushing most of the right buttons right now. He is doing a good job with this team. He has them engaged, performing at a high level and playing fundamentally sound baseball.

My philosophy is keep in improving at the places where you are deficient.

Farrell is a broken clock. It's only a matter of time before he's canned.

When things turn bad, he is helpless to turn things around and is more likely to make things worse. Right now, they can't justify upgrading at manager.

If they can justify things like the Wally Wave, firing Don, signing Pablo, etc., they can justify anything.

I think Farrell has a lot to do with the current success. And no one can prove I'm wrong.

Did Farrell hit that triple in the ninth or the walk off double? No? You can't prove my point wrong either.

The manager should get a realistic share of the credit and the blame. On balance so far, Farrell is on the positive side. Farrell put his players in the position to succeed, and they did. Game strategy includes deciding who plays and who doesn't. In game, Farrell made all the right bullpen moves. Five relievers gave up zero runs. Those relievers didn't put themselves in the game. What the hell does the guy have to do to get any credit?

Farrell gets credit for the wins, but not the losses? Farrell looked s***** in the first few innings of this game then. Why did Farrell bunt in the 9th? Dumbest call all year.

because this team didn't go through a significant tough stretch early in April that the team somehow rallied its way out of. I guess they rallied despite Farrell, right? Is that what the narrative is going to be? When things slump, it's all Farrell, but he can't possibly be responsible when things get back to normal right?

Speaking of broken clocks. I mean eventually Farrell is going to run into a problem he can't fix on this franchise so if you keep predicting it EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. THE. SLIGHTEST. THING. GOES. WRONG!!!!! you will have to be right eventually.

Don't talk to me about broken clocks. There seem to be several of them in this thread.

The real referendum on Farrell will begin with ERod returns. If Buchholz stays while a deserving member departs, then you will have a mutiny

There is numerous people in this rotation who aren't deserving, so Buchholz might have to stay by default. O'Sullivan, Buchholz, Owens and Kelly, who will be back soon all suck. Not really sure which of those guys is most deserving of a spot behind Price/Wright/Porcello/E-Rod.

If Farrell advocated going with Shaw and Holt over Panda and Castillo, and bringing up Vazquez as quickly as possible, you definitely have to give him some credit for the team's performance.

Farrell didn't hit the triple nor did he call for the bunt. Hanley thought he could get the run home that way. It's on Hanley.

I'll agree to that, but we'll never know if it was DD's call. To me, I just liked how the team was run with Lovullo in charge. I don't think Farrell has sound judgment at times.

Guys play hard for him - and he clearly is very good at a lot of the "stuff we don't see". The org has committed to the young position players and they have flourished. The prior dithering about them when they did not turn into All-Stars in seconds seems like above his pay grade.
