1 baserunner final 3 innings, 15 strikeouts. If you get 15 Ks, defense hardly matters. That said, just moving up from Hanley/Panda to "adequate" on the left side really helps the defense ... should be "plus" at three spots a night minimum.

Good approach today. Lot of good stuff here. Farrell made one non-move which was little baffling, but ultimately did not matter. (not going to Chris Young against the lefty with a chance to blow the game open)

I don't mind dull voices, really. Mine is awful. But this guy talked a lot of obscure stats and records, and I like that in my baseball radio.

He might be ok for background noise, but I didn't enjoy listening to him in my car.

He hit .183 his first year with Cleveland, so they figured it would make sense to bring him back and he rewarded them with a .133 average

They brought him back because Tito like his leadership skills.

They see him as a player coach.

Tracked the 1st 3 innings on Gameday, then watched the highlights when I got out of practice. Great game.

This was odd. Farrell being Farrell?

Holt is an interesting player in this lineup. He's scrappy. Not likely to hit for power or for really high average, but will give consistent production with a bit of speed and a good eye to go along with insane versatility. He does get exposed a little and seems to tail off at the end, but he reminds me of a poor man's Bill Mueller. The guy also has quietly seen over 4 pitches per PA since becoming a sock. His current position does limit his value, as he'd be a hell of a lot more valuable in the IF, but for now, he fills a hole without embarrassing himself

Here we go LOL I didn't see the game, but did Tito have a right-hander ready in case they pinch-hit with Young there?

Whenever anyone talks about obscure stats, my mind goes right to a clip of the movie Little Big League, where a 12 year old becomes the manager of the Twins. It's not about him, though, it's about the broadcasters and they're obscure stats, like Twins announcer John Gordon, making fun of the radio announcer's tendency to come up with crazy stats, like: "He’s eight for 13 this year, against left-handers, in night games, played above the Mason Dixon Line."

I think you are correct. When the current lefty came in (Manship), a righty was also warming up at the time.

As one sports cliché goes, that was 'just like they drew it up'.

This sums it up pretty well.

Great game all around.

It's kind of like Newton's Third Law.

The righty was Joba though.

The young star Mookie, the old Lion Ortiz, and the new ace and closer. What a pleasure to watch!

I forgot what it was like to watch a Red Sox starting pitcher with a commanding mound presence.

On the downside, Farrell's teams still run the bases like idiot bush leaguers.

Great kick off to 2016. E-Rod and Smith return hopefully before May pls.
I heard that the middle of May is the most optimistic timetable for ERod.

But Young doesn't hit righties.

My guess is the difference of Holt hitting against Manship and Young hitting against Joba is marginal at best.

Here's me playing with stats. It probably takes me 5 times as long as you all.

2015

Joba's ERA vs lefties: .362.

Manships against righties: .103

2015

Holts BA against lefties: .312

Young vs righties: 182

I'd call hat a good workmanline win. Everyone did their jobs, no real surprises, the players who you'd expect to make big hits made them, the ace was on his game, and the closer hung a 0

Detwiler was the lefty in the game when the bases were loaded (pbp here: http://espn.go.com/mlb/playbyplay?gameId=360405105) Top 7

Chamberlain was in the bullpen - so a pinch hit might have brought him in earlier. And Holt has shown some evidence of a reverse platoon split - but the sample sizes are pretty small, so not a ton proven. For me, with a chance to make it a huge lead, Chris Young's ability to mash lefties, Joba's inability to get anybody out easily, and Young's much higher possibility of hitting it out of the park or somesuch - would have made me go to the pinch hitter there. After all, if LF is truly a job-share, then act like it.

But if it was a mistake, it was a misdemeanor.
