What has happened to Adam Wainwright? He has been just awful so far this season.

Just as Weaver. I remeber fangraphs selling Weaver like a diamond for the next 10 years, 3 years ago or something, and he has never been the same since a couple of years ago.

Because fangraphs is basically the Weekly World News of baseball stats. http://weeklyworldnews.com/

I was watching a Yankees game the other night and I saw that Phil Coke was back with them. I went on Baseball-Ref to see how he got there and I found this in his Transactions history:

• October 30, 2014: Granted Free Agency.

• March 5, 2015: Signed as a Free Agent with the Chicago Cubs.

• May 26, 2015: Released by the Chicago Cubs.

• May 31, 2015: Signed as a Free Agent with the Toronto Blue Jays.

• June 22, 2015: Granted Free Agency.

• June 27, 2015: Signed as a Free Agent with the Oakland Athletics.

• August 19, 2015: Released by the Oakland Athletics.

• March 9, 2016: Signed as a Free Agent with the Atlanta Braves.

• March 26, 2016: Released by the Atlanta Braves.

• April 25, 2016: Signed as a Free Agent with the New York Yankees.

Holy crap, talk about making the rounds, 5 teams in a year. It shows you what some guys go through to try to stay in the big leagues.

Okay, not only does this really, really not need it's own thread, but this isn't the right forum even if it did. This has nothing to do with the Red Sox at all. I'm going to move this, for lack of a better place, to the General Baseball discussion thread. Please for the love of all that any of you hold dear in your hearts, PLEASE stop creating threads for every stray thought. This is not Twitter.

Terry Ryan was a good GM but lately I have to wonder about some of his moves. Promote the franchise's number one pitching prospect in a lost season, and then a couple weeks later send him down again right after one bad start. Sure, that won't mess with his confidence. And if the suggestion is Pat Dean will take Berrios's place, that's hardly an upgrade.

Gonzalez canned today as Braves Manager. That was not unexpected at all. I wonder if anyone in the organization actually thinks that this will help the team at all, or if they just fired him because they sort of had to.

The most realistic explanation for the move would probably be: 'We can't do any worse.'

You do remember the Sox manager in 2012, right?

Oh yes. What's crazy about that 2012 season is that the Sox were actually over .500 at the end of July.

Right now Atlanta is mathematically on pace for the worst record in history.

Yeah, but I don't think Gonzalez's management had any more to do with the Braves abysmal W/L record than Valentine's management had to do with the Sox's above .500 record in July. Valentine had the advantage of at least having slightly more competent players than Gonzalez.

I don't know enough to say for sure, but they committed a few mental errors on the basepaths in the Sunday game against KC.

James Shields pitching like an ace. We should trade him.

He's one of those guys that has consistently been mentioned as "likely" being available. Depending on cost, he could be a nice get.

Yup. Probably he is not a No. 1 anymore, but a decent No 2? You betcha.

We can't trade him, he's not on our team.

Also, a 1.30 WHIP and 4.12 FIP don't scream "ace" or "#2". Unless Shields comes heavily discounted (a possibility) they should aim for a superior option.

LOL! ERA estimators are meaningless in short samples, but if you like ERA estimators xfip and SIERA can tell you what kind of pitcher is James Shields. Last year he was a 3.7 SIERA/xFIP pitcher. He is 3.6 SIERA/xfip pitcher after 9 years, but if you like FIP he is 3.8 at it.

Also, I said that he was pitching like an ace, because... Well he pitched like an ace today.

Anyways, I'd rather Shields than any of our current staff no named Price, right now in our team.

Shields pitched like an ace today. Wright has pitched like one basically all season. I can understand wanting Shields over Buchholz or Owens/Kelly/O'Sullivan/Anyone else who has pitched, but over Wright? Over Porcello? Both of those guys have been more dependable this year than Shields, who is pitching in a home park much friendlier to pitchers.

Yeah, pitching estimators and past performance tell me he has league average run prevention numbers with high IP numbers, aka a#3 profile. Definitely better than some of our options, but YOTN's points are very much valid. Porcello/Wright have been more effective in a much more hostile environment for pitchers. I would personally fly Kelly/Buch for Shields right goddamn now though.

mmm... I love what I have seen in Wright... But I need to see more. IMO Porcello will regress to 4+ ERA soon. James Shields is a 3 ERA right now. Actually he is a 3.7 ERA career pitcher... But if you don't like ERA, his ERA estimators like FIP, xFIP and SIERA which isolate pitcher's abilities, James Shields is still a very good pitcher over 9+ years.

The funny thing is that his ERA estimators and his ERA are practically the same -- around 3.7 over 9 y. i.e. The park friendlier and good defense arguments doesn't take away the fact that James Shields is a very good pitcher and he can pitch at great level anywhere.

Era estimators after 9 year in the mid 3 are league average in run prevention? LOL! Yeah sure.

Also, Zips, streamer and depth charts concur projecting very solid numbers this year for him... Again. Thus far he is in that highway.

What he did 9 years ago has very little bearing on what he's doing right now. Usually you take the last three years and (because it's common sense) apply some age-related regression.
