Panda for Shields? if I were SD I wouldn't trade Shields for Panda by any means.

That was just an example. It could be any mid rotation pitcher.

Lol no. Sale isn't going anywhere, the Padres are actively shopping Shields. If the Sox ate the whole contract, they could probably get him for a palatable package.

The Sox have reportedly been in contact with the Padres, but are not interested in Shields. There is speculation that they are gauging possible future trade scenarios for Tyson Ross.

I'd rather have Tyson Ross in our rotation than Kelly or Porcello. He's a step up from those guys and is about the same as Buccholz (except that he could pitch 200 innings). He's also arbitration eligible through next year.

Not a fan of either Ross (control issues, HR rate would baloon here) or Cashner (grade A stuff, constant health issues).

Also, it's not just the BoSox calling the Padres, the Padres are talking to a bunch of other teams too.

Sale is a top 5 pitcher who the White Sox have at replacement level starter cost. He is going nowhere.

I posit this though: With inverted W mechanics and a bout with elbow trouble in his resume already, who's to say the White Sox don't take the plunge if someone overpays? The problem is what constitutes "overpayment" for such a talent.

It always comes down to the asking price, but I wouldn't mind adding Ross.

Padres FO not putrid enough to ponder Panda.

Padres have been scouting Panda.

Might mean nothing, might mean something.

Porcello looked terrible again today. He did throw one good Sinker today...not to say he had a good Sinker through the stint. But it was by far the best Sinker I have seen him throw this spring.

His best pitch today was a slider which he did get to one location successfully through the stint. But if he can only throw that Slider to that location and can only surround it with that going nowhere FB of his and that funky curve, that Slider will get tagged as well. He was as we have always seen him here, wild in the strike zone. Way too late in the spring to be pitching like this. He needs that Sinker and he sure as heck needs to be able to throw more than one good one in a 6+ inning stint.

I hope there's something in this James Shields rumor. We need a legit number 2, and he eats innings like I eat pussy.

Shields is highly durable, but he's not a top of the rotation type anymore.

I don't think the Sox really care. If they can trade off Pablo for Shields without giving up much more than that, I think that is likely something the Sox would do. SD if actually interested will likely want some sort of prospect thrown in and that is where I would not want to give much up.

So does ST matter or not? Don't say Shaw shouldn't start when he's killing it in ST, but prop up Kelly for pitching ok in ST.

He has a history of only pitching well for parts of a season. He hasn't put it together before. We can't be sure he'll do so now.

Until he actually pitches like a #2, the argument is silly imo.

I believe there is a Spring Training competition index that tells you what type of competition players have been facing during the course of ST. I think it is on Baseball Reference under the spring training stats for any particular ball club. http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BOS/2016.shtml

So Shaw has an OppQual of 8.1, meaning that he has been facing generally competition that is of AAA quality. Out of all your starters Kelly has faced the weakest opponents besides Owens, at 8.4. So he is right around the AAA quality competition as well, but then again so is Price at 8.6

I know this doesn't take into account players working on different things like bunting or throwing a certain pitch, but it does help to quantify who a person is playing against.

I think the likelihood of an obese and underperforming Pablo for a now steady while unspectacular Shields is getting more and more unlikely

I'm with jacko on this one. This idea is detached from reality. The Padres have no possible incentive to trade a player who despite being overpaid, provides valuable innings, for a guy who, despite being overpaid, provides absolutely nothing, or close to it.

...unless the Sox eat both contracts and give them a juicy prospect in return. Make that offer, and they won't hang up the phone.

We'd sort of be taken out behind the woodshed on that deal, don't you think?

Besides the Padres not having much at 3B, shedding some payroll would be their incentive. The Sox would have to take on Shields' contract and eat a good bit of Pablo's contract, I'm sure.

Yup, it would cost the Sox a lot to trade Pablo. But, it's still cheaper than DFAing him, which most people here seem to expect.

I don't see a trade happening because I don't see Shields being a large enough upgrade over what the Sox already have in the rotation.

Thanks for posting this Bigemu23. The OppQual stat seems a little simplistic, but it serves its purpose nonetheless.

As I've said many times, you have to take ST stats with a grain of salt. Besides being an extremely small sample, the quality of the opposition is not always up to major league par, and players are usually working on specific things.

"Hi, AJ, I'd like to offer you Rafael Devers 'mumble mumble val' for James Shields."

"Really, that sounds good, let's go over the financials then."

"Okay, we'll pay all of Shields' contract. You just have to pay all of Pablo's.."

Click.

You are correct. Shields would not be much of an upgrade over what we already have, though he should be able to give the team a lot of innings, which is valuable in its own right.

But having Pablo sit on the bench really does the team little good.
