I feel like we made the best offseason signing of the season with Hanley. He has been everything we hoped for and more.

Slides straight into the #4 spot, has already jacked 10 home runs including the latest 3 run shot to power a win over division rivals Toronto.

Currently Tied with Nelson Cruz for most homeruns in the majors.

What more could you want?

I know he's not going to hit 80 homeruns, although that's the pace he is on, but after seeing the Red Sox flop on some pretty big free agent acquisitions, it feels good to see them nail a free agent pickup.

Best of all, Hanley gets to do this with the team that originally drafted him. And what a Homecoming! :-)

The only thing with Hanley is he tends to be very injury prone and an awful fielder, as we've seen already lol. Hopefully he is able to stay healthy, if he does it wouldn't surprise me if he was in mvp conversation at end of year Edited by Jasonbay44

He's doing what is expected of him. Hit the baseball.

I'll reserve calling this the best signing of the off season until the season is over.

I've been pretty impressed with the way Hannigan has played.

His play behind the plate has been very good and he seems to get on base regularly despite a low BA.

I've also been impressed with Ogando. I was against this signing at first because of his suspect health.

He has, for the most part, been pretty good.

Hanley has been very enjoyable to watch. I don't know which has entertained me more - his explosive bat or his unique style of outfield. I did not like the signing initially, now of course I do. The only real place for him right now is in the outfield. He is making most of the plays but the transition looks pretty tough from here.

Hanley is not quoite as bad in LF as Daniel Murphy was when the Mets tried him out there in 2009. But he is mich worse than Manny and maybe even worse the Mike Greenwell.

I knew he mention of Gator would get a response from you. I don't think Greeny was a good OFer, but he wasn't as bad a people made him out to be. I think he was better than HanRam is.

I agree completely. He made himself serviceable eventually.

His Wife Tracey was a costumer of mine. I never met him, though. She was nice.

I sat right out there in left field many times and watched Greenwell back in the day. Thought he was adequate not great but I loved how he played the game. If Hanley stays out of the left field wall, I would take him over Manny.

If I were to bet on which player is worth his price over the course of a contract, my first choice is Ogando. High speed fastball in a low speed bullpen, very cheap, so far effective.

It's April. No one is "the best" of anything yet.

I was thinking the same thing. Obviously, we all love what we've seen from him offensively so far, but just like we can't say this pitching staff is doomed in April, we can't say Hanley is the best signing of the offseason.

That said, Hanley looks really good at the plate. While his HR rate will undoubtedly slow down, I think we will see some very good things from him if he stays healthy.

Obviously it's early - but on the basis of one month, both Ramirez and Sandoval have been good. In actuality - every Red Sox move so far has gone about the median of what one could have expected.

Don't forget to add our s***** starting pitching and the fact that our heralded hitting attack has misfired twice already to the Yankees in this series that we needed to win and will probably get swept at. We have a s***** team; I am now totally convinced of that and further that we are overrated hitting and we have more than or share of choke-ups. Taking a month off as I did in 2012 and 2014 and if I return and we are even worse than we are now....as we were both times in spades, the Red Sox front office, manager and team will be open season.

Weren't they going to win the division, Fred? It's only May 2nd.

I drank some of the Kool-Aid and didn't realize what a pack of choke-ups our hitters were, how s***** our starting pitching really was, how inept beyond words Farrell as a manager is, and how terribly idiotic Prune Face is when it comes to understanding talent and how the market dictates what players are worth and if he ever does, goes out and get us good solid players and not the s*** like Smiley Miley, Porcine Porcello, and Muggs Masterson. And maybe a couple of good bullpenners not named Mujica who was kept only because of salary when Varvaro was actually a better pitcher. I won't ask you to bet but a gentlemanly wager says we are in last place when I come back next month when I declare open season on the front office.

It's May 2nd. You're a grown-ass man. Grown-ups have patience and self-restraint. Show just one of those traits.

You can not emit an opinion/projection about the team until August (unless it is good one), Fred. Don't you get it? Haha

I still need time to judge where this season is going. We can't declare Hanley to be the best offseason signing yet, not only because we've played 24 games, but also because he needs to improve defensively. If we look at whee the new acquisitions are right now, it appears like Sandoval is the best signing, because of his great defense and recent hot streak. But for now, it can change constantly, because it is SO DAMN EARLY IN THE SEASON. As UN said, we can't jump to conclusions. I don't know about you, but I thnk this team still needs to come together. The offense has been great, but yet can be better. The pitching has the capability, as we've seen the last 3 games now with Porcello, Masterson, and Miley. We'll come to form and have games where both offense and defense are great. When we get there, then we can judge who the best signing of the offseason was.

Yeah it's only May. They may magically turn into a better team than they are right now. Y'all have been overly optimistic since before the season even began. Red Sox will finish third place at best in AL East if things go well for most of the season.

Hell, talks of best signing and it's too early in the season to judge the contract. Try it's only been a couple months in a multi year contract to judge the contract.

This thread would start to make sense at the end of the season, and then carry some weight two years later, and then have some serious consideration 3 years later. And possibly have some light shed on the answer in about 3.5 years.....

I would like to borrow your cristal ball. Some lottery numbers would be nice.

Call me crazy, but I'm sticking to what I've been saying since January: Red Sox will win the World Series. This team is too good to not come together. The offense will hit its stride soon, and will be able to bail out some of the games in which the pitching isn't great.

You're not crazy, because I agree with you, and I know I'm not crazy. ;) I won't go as far as predicting the Sox to win the WS, but I still predict that they'll win the division. The Yankees have gone on an .800 win streak, winning 12 of their last 15. We know that's not going to continue. In the meantime, the Sox have played .400 ball, winning only 6 of their last 15. We know that's not going to continue either. Our pitching will not be as bad as it was last week, and our offense will eventually click like it's supposed to.

It will be a tight division all season. The standings and first place will likely change numerous times. When it's all said and done, I think the Sox will end up on top.

I agree that the offense will get better along with the starting pitching. They will be a competitive team, but only 85-87 wins.
