Fixing the offense is a bigger problem than many realize.

Exactly what should be done to turn it around?

Trade? Trade who and for whom?

Whether or not it is their fault is for the post-mortems. They should attempt to fix this instead of just throwing in the towel and riding what we have. Standing pat doesn't seem like a very hopeful option.

I agree - but I think it is a tricky question too. How much of the offensive "salvation lies within"? That is a genuinely tricky question. Fixing the pitching is a lot more straightforward.

Right - Sandoval was signed for a boatload of money, and Middlebrooks was given away. I don't disagree, just found it interesting that we could have saved $95 million and gotten the same production from WMB.

But that of course assumes the next 4.6 years will be the same as the first .4 years.

yes, fixing the offense is trickier. One or two hot hitters can have a cascading effect that lifts an entire lineup's offensive production. Will 1or 2 of our current guys get hot? Or do we need to add a bat? There is no such dynamic at work with our pitchers. The pitching simply needs to be upgraded.

The pitching "upgrade" was in the plan ... and to be fair, it has gotten better (replacing Masterson's entrails with what Eduardo has given them so far clearly does that - even Eduardo regressing to "promising rookie" would do that). But i think the pitching upgrade was dependent on the other stuff working.

Let's put it another way - I thought there was a very low chance that the Sox would not be buyers given the team on paper. Management has to ask that question before the "who" part of it.

The only reliable pitchers are Buch and E Rod. That's it.

IMO There are so many flaws in this team that can not be solved before the trade deadline. They need to clean up the house in every department. A couple of moves won't fix this.

They should stay with the plan and upgrade the pitching soon. I don't think they should mail it in the rest of the way. I can't imagine that Ben can think that he will have a job next season if he mails it in. I have to believe that he is trying. Ownership may have lost confidence in him and told him to stand down, because they fear he will throw away more of their money. Maybe it is a lame duck situation and Ben's only hope is for a miracle.

I don't think that the Sox will make any big moves at the deadline. I think that you are right, Ted. I would hope that they at least test the waters for a youngish controllable arm while unloading some reserve talent or low rated prospects. I have no idea who those pieces would be.

The Sox are in a pickle. They better hope that Sandoval and Hanley produce more and for a long time. The same can be said for Miley and Porcello.

Miley's contract is peanuts, relatively speaking.

Low rated prospects aren't going to get you a young controllable arm.

Ortiz must go - can't let the option vest. Then either move Hanley to DH and Panda to 1B or move Panda to DH and Hanley off the roster.

This can't be fixed just by throwing even more large amounts of money at big ticket FAs. Just because Boston has money is no excuse to spend it carelessly.

Miley was ordinary in the NL, so let's trade for him and give him an extension, peanuts or not. I loved the blow-up last night. Dude, as you have so many times this season, you just pitched like s***. Sit down and shut the f*** up.

Blow it up. Trade/Dump the expendables. Fire the entire coaching staff. Consider firing Ben, but stop short only because of the f***ing beautiful Rodriguez trade.

Hanley might pull in a top prospect if you're lucky -- a 3/60M for middle of the order bat will be worth it to someone. Move Buchholz to Theo. Stop trying to make Porcello a strikeout pitcher. Move Kelly to the pen. Call up Craig and give him ABs.

Porcello/Miley/Wright/Rodriguez/Johnson/Owens for the rest of the year.

Blow up the roster of Ben's doing, but save him because of one trade? Nope, that won't work. He has to go,

I cannot imagine why Johnson has not at least been given a cup of coffee. Bring him up or trade him. Don't keep that kid around just for security sake.

Not a soul will take Hanley or Panda right now. Hanley has proven to be a huge cancer and after a hot month, he's been ice cold and showing signs of being a prick.

Panda isn't going anywhere.

Hanley is 31, mostly healthy, has a .870 career OPS, and is relatively affordable. If made available, he's going to be the best bat on the trade market. If Tulo or Car-Gon's names get floated around, they're going to cost the farm.

Out of all the BS that they've pulled this year, this is the thing that mystifies me the most. They supposedly went for a rotation that could sink the ball and get ground balls, then they turn around and make Porcello abandon that approach. Wat?

I disagree. Someone on this boy-scout squad had to f***ING SHOW SOMETHING.

I don't really disagree with you here, I just think that you go into the dugout kick or throw or hit something. You pitched like a piece of s*** - I don't think it is a good idea to go after your manager for taking you out finally. wouldn't have mattered to me if he had broken his hand but don't go in there and try to blame somebody else because you sucked. That being said, i still like his toughness. He is a great back of the rotation starter or maybe even an addition to the bullpen at some point.

I listened to the manager's show today and they discussed the Miley outburst. He was upset about being taken of the game. He felt that he could weather the storm. Lol! What did he tell Farrell? "Hey skip, i've got them right where I want them. I am trying to tire them out by running them around the bases in the hot weather. In a couple of more innings they will be exhausted."

This team is hard to watch right now. One night they can't score, and the next ten runs isn't enough. If Betts goes on the DL do they give JBJ a real look? Kelly needs to go to the bullpen as a power arm. He can't put enough innings together to be a starter. It is painful to watch Ramirez in left! He makes Manny look like a gold glover. How can someone who played shortstop (Very athletic position) look so lost? It is going to be a long summer!

The Mets DFA'd Dillon Gee today-- a pitcher who is very similar to Rick Porcello. He's two years older, but with far fewer innings of wear and tear. Let's see if anyone rushes to pick him up and throw $80 million at him for 4 years.

Funniest thing - is he was ordinary in the past to a little better than that. He is not old and he was extended for a reasonable haul for an innings eater. Oh how I WISH he was ordinary!
