I was just watching some clips of the kid. He certainly has speed.

He LOOKS older than 19. Much older than anyone I have ever known at 19. Whatever.

I am wondering how the signing of this kid makes a trade for Hammells imminent or more likely.

As I said it is loooong shot... But if the kid is the real deal (very likely) and ready, and they trade XB for Hammels I won't complain although I would have signed a FA. What is interesting is that this signing suddenly happened after a couple of weeks where the Hammels talks were everywhere.

Easy there. Kid is 210 lbs already - chances of sticking at SS are very low. Also he's 19. I imagine the Sox - given he is not on a major league deal - will start him in Greenville. You have all season to move him up to Portland if he crushes the levels. But it clearly gives them an embarassment of position prospects which has not been the case in a while.

Dude lives in a glue factory. Most of what I have read has said he's a 2B that can play 3B. SS was almost always mentioned as a long shot.

Probably I just do not lose my hopes in see that No. 1 SP in our team.

In theory it allows them to talk Betts. And I think the Phillies, for giving up 3 years of control of a good pitcher at a reasonable contract, want to come away with at least one real guy.

It doesn't really imo. They still aren't moving Xander or Swihart. I guess it could be argued it makes Betts possibly "more available", but I think they still hold onto him. They only way Hamels comes to Boston is for JBJ, Vazquez, and 1-2 SP prospects(Owens and maybe a Ball type). The Sox are already over the LT, so I'd be surprised if they made a move for Hamels before the date of the new LT year(April I believe).

Even 2B will be a distant memory - those aren't generally positions you see strong safeties playing. But if you project him to something realistic - 3B/RF ... it means the system has four serious 3B (including Sandoval) ... so you figure that is part of the trade inventory. Let's put it this way - I hope Cecchini is ready to move.

If the name were Betts, I'd stay away.

Wonder what would happen if XB didn't perfom as expected by TDL...

Oh I wouldn't be surprised if Bogaerts is in talks now - this management seems itchy about these sorts of things, when kids do not do exactly what they dreamed of immediately.

That's what I thought. It wil be interesting what could happen next weeks. If this kid takes some ABs in ST and performs as JBJ did, It will be interesting what they are going to do with him.

I doubt it. I think Xander is the type of talent you hold onto until he flames out, trade value be damned. If both Xander in Moncada reach their potentials, the Sox could have a 50HR+ left side of the IF in a couple years. In in todays offensive light league that would be absolutely insane production that every fanbase and front office around the league will drool over.

Ben was not kidding about building the "next great Red Sox team". Maybe these guys won't pan out, but it is very clear the Red Sox have focused on getting younger.

Moncada, 19.

Castillo 27.

Pablo, 28.

Porcello 26.

Joe Kelly, 26.

Wade Miley 28.

Masterson 29.

Hanley 31.

Plus a bunch of top international draftee pitchers.

If they trade Xander, they have a big hole at SS. Marrero can't hit and his glove doesn't make up for it. Moncada is not ready this year. He's only 19. Hanley can't play SS anymore due to his size.

They must be very sure. They haven't shelled out that much money for an individual talent since Daisuke Matsuzaka.
I was enjuoying this development until this. ^ :)

You don't think he that could at least be as good of a lineup black hole as XB was last year?

Do we want black holes or people with actual upside?

SS has been a disaster since they unloaded Nomar. The Sox do not have a MLB ready replacement for XB unless the put Hanley there. Oye.

XB has not flamed out. He get this year at least to improve.

No way they move him without a good replacement in hand. By that I mean no glovey mcnoodle bat guys like Merrero. Or a 19 year old who has never played full season ball.

It's been a revolving door, but hardly a disaster. They did win 3 titles with the guys after Nomar.

BTW: I agree with you. I just am more uncertain about the ability of this management to be strong when putting the kiddos into the show. There is some reactiveness which is alarming.

Less sure than with Dice-K ... since after all, they did not give Moncada a big league deal.

mmmm if that meant trade for Hammels, I could live with another 2014 XB with Marrero at SS, since the actual offense could protect his bat.

Orlando Cabrera disagrees. Lugo was fine in 07.

No, it has nothing to do with Hammels.
