Some are saying, if he came from the United States he would have been the #1 overall pick in the draft.

So, I have no problem with the Red Sox spending money for a 19 year old they feel can be a top class, future impact player.

I feel like the penalty for signing international players is way too steep though. Really, dollar for dollar tax penalty?

Kinda unfair there.

If you want to limit the ability to sign international players, maybe you should have a separate draft for them?? But the monetary penalty is pretty darn heavy!

I'm pretty excited to have Moncado joining the Red Sox though. Apparently our scouts love him. So I'll just have to trust our scouting on this one.

It's not just the Sox scouts. Everyone across the league was high on this kid.

Of course there is the possibility that he will be an expensive flop.

There's also the possibility that he will end up being a steal.

I choose to believe the 2nd possiblity. :)

maybe, but look at it this way. If there was no draft, this is about what the #1 overall pick would be making. The bar for Moncada to make the money stand up is not that high (basically 2-3 average-above average seasons)

The big money for this kid can be rationalized in several ways.

I just am against paying a 19 year old kid this kind of money. He has done nothing to justify it. It is all speculation at this point.

But at least the Sox out Yankeed the Yankees!!!1!!

The question is: How much money would you pay to "buy" a first overall draft pick? He could end up being Arod, Agon, Mauer, Price. Or you could end up with someone like Delmon Young/ Matt Bush. There is monstrous talent here -- it is a big risk, but the reward could end up being a franchise changing player.

I'm glad we have him but has any team ever forked out 60+ million for a 19 year old draft pick? I remember reading that he was rated quite highly. Definitely in the top 10. Did people think that I was a lock for the number 1 pick?

Meant to say he I don't think I was too close to number 1.

I don't think it is as simple as how much would you pay for a #1 pick. That's one way of framing it, but it seems strange to me. They spent 60 million on a particular player, not a pick. I don't think they would have paid that much just to have the choice among all amateur players in any random year--I think who Moncada is is a big part of it. The kid is a freak. He's could end up being unlike any player the Sox have ever had. He could also flame out, but it's hard not to dream on him if you have the chance.

I think this is somewhere between a FA signing and a draft pick. It's a luxury gamble, but I look forward to watching it play out.

No, because they never had to - no draftee has that kind of leverage, especially a collegian

Indeed, as a matter of fact the draft system is deliberately designed, along with controlling the voraciousness of big market teams, to minimize the leverage of potential talents just as much as humanly possible.

0-3 in his debut in a 13-11 loss for Greenville today.

That's good enough. Bring him up and put him in the lineup!!!

Johnson will get his chance.

This is going to be another player that the Sox will move from his natural position. If he isn't going to play second for them, move him now. Its hard watching these guys learn to play positions while in Boston.

Natural position? He's 19 - you do what anybody does. Start them at the premium position until they can't. He's a shortstop while his body lets him. He's a great athlete - things will be fine. Fact is, the farm is the place where all players get real defensive training - amateur clubs sure don't do it.

The bright side with Moncada is that he will get proper instruction in this country while maturing in our MiLB system.

If he is as talented as so many seem to think, he could turn out to be something special.

We missed out big time on Ryan Westmoreland.

I think having him start at 2B is smart. It's his so called "natural" position and most importantly it's about getting him comfortable in pro ball this year. There's no reason to throw everything at this kid at once. Too bad about the hammy.
