The question is, are the sox willing to go past the LT? Abrahams latest iteration had the sox around $187 mil when including arb raises. That leaves them with $2 mil to play. Davis probably signs for that amount

Of course they are. It has such a low impact on them since they stayed under in 2012 and 2013. Plus they can easily either 1. Dish Dempster or Peavy for relief, or 2. Exercise Lackeys option and that takes his AAV from 16 down to 8.25, so that provides ~8mm in relief.

But it doesn't matter, they won't care to exceed the LT. They never have before, either

I nearly got burned at the stake for suggesting Davis earlier in the off-season.

Aha, sorry about that. :P

He seems to make more sense now than he did at the time. Righthanded complement for Bradley. Plenty of speed makes him a good #9 type guy, and a pinch runner. My biggest concern is that he might not be that great a centerfielder, although his UZR seems to have suffered there in 2010/2011 due to range -- something you wouldn't expect from a 40SB guy -- maybe that was a fluke. With Young, Dejesus and Granderson off the market he might be the best remaining option.

FYI, exercising Lackey's option won't affect his AAV, per reports from a couple weeks ago.

There must be a way to get around it. Maybe they could ask Lackey if he would restructure his contract so he will get paid 9, 9 or 16, 1 instead of 16, .5. If it helps the team get under the cap by 5-6 million, he gets a small bump in salary, seems to work for everyone.

How does that work?? If he is currently essentially on 1/16 and it gets bumped to 2/16.5, I can't understand how the guaranteed year doesn't affect his AAV.

Do you have a link by chance? I'm very curious.

I talked to Lucchino about this when I gave him a ride and he said that they didn't want to lock into the extra year for no reason since they weren't up against the LT (at the time) and they didn't want to piss him off by making him play for league min. But he never mentioned that it wouldn't affect the AAV, which I mentioned in my question when I asked him

Alex Speier at WEEI is the guy who says the option can't affect his 2014 AAV. The explanation would be in the AAV calculation rules themselves. Good luck with that LOL

But I was also wondering if the Red Sox didn't want to do this because it would piss off Lackey, as Lucchino said.

Ellsbury got 7/153. Crawford type money. Actually Crawford only got 7/142. Hate to see Ellsbury in pinstripes, but there was no way the Red Sox were going to match the money and years. We need to get away from that type of contract.

The contract is way overboard for Ellsbury, and the Cano contract is equally as nuts.

I see an option similar to Rajai Davis mentioned above as much more realistic than Kemp, and would be surprised if Ben gave up on WMB to gamble on Kemp's health. But maybe that's just what I want to happen lol.

So far the Sox have had a great offseason, all we needed to do was resign Nap and not go overboard for guys like Ells/Grandy/Beltran to qualify as great to me. (My preferred 5th OF was Beltran but the yanks are reeling right now. Hey! Here's a thought, if they cut Ichiro do the Sox have interest?)We've added a couple bullpen arms which truly is a more the merrier scenario as its trouble to project those innings from year to year.

I'm excited to see Will, Xander and JBJR all out there and doing their thing! I will miss continue to miss Iggy tho.... Sox Rule!

Sox will trade a SP next week at the winter meetings to clear some $$$$. BC still needs to get an OF that can play CF and hits righty, and a left handed hitter that can play SS / 3B.

I guess it's now clear that if the Japanese post Tanaka to the highest bidder the Red Sox are not going to be in on it, right? I think I heard the ownership reiterate that they are not going over the $189 million threshold. Are we in the market for a starting pitcher?

Very doubtful fred. I don't foresee any big names being added to the rotation. If anything we could see them deal a SP. Kinda odd to have have an off season where everything seems pretty squared away before the winter meetings huh?

If they bust the LT threshold this season I think it will be to get Kemp(for WMB, Dempster and a SP prospect, $ is the deal I've been floating in my head lately) and Drew, not to get a P like Tanaka.

I heard that they're considering going over 189.

There's no highest bidder anymore, under the new rules the most teams can bid for Japanese pitcher's is a 20 mill posting fee.

But then he will go to the team who negotiates the highest contract. So there is a highest bidder.

However, his present club is under no obligation to let him go.

Posted
mark, we are operating under the assumption that he is posted. Under the proposed system, unless he cannot come to an agreement with one of the bidding clubs, he is as good as gone.

I'm wondering if 20M is going to be enough for the Eagles. They weren't happy with that number when their league agreed with the MLB, and reports seem to claim they aren't sure if it would be worth it.

Looks like we have all put the Ellsbury signing behind us. Yankees overpaid. We are looking great going into 2014. Sox are 10-1 to win the WS in 2014 ... as of DEC 1. The Napoli signing might improve these odds.

Its funny that the $pankee fans are all over Cano on New York sports talk radio for taking the big $$$$$ that the Mariners were waving at him, yet they have no problem when the $panks doing the same thing. Listening to it, it was like they felt how dare a player of Cano's ability leave New York. By the way Cano looked good with his beard and Mariner uniform. Between his comments and the beard he did take some shots at the $panks.

Yanks blew it. All they had to do was give him 7/210 if they didn't want to go 10 years. They basically undervalued a home bred guy who is their best 2nd baseman ever. I have to agree with Cano when he said he didn't get enough respect from the Yankee management.

Cano was their best player last year. If you look at their current roster who is their best player now? I always hated seeing him come up in a big spot against the Sox. I think Papi was right when he said they made a big mistake letting him walk.

You guys couldn't be funnier. Seriously, giving 10 years to Robinson Cano was not a mistake? How can anybody think that? The guy is going to be 31 years old prior to the season. He is going to finish his contract at 41 years old. Have we not learned our lesson for 10 year contracts on players that are past the age of 30? How did that Alex Rodriguez deal look? Let's try and be consistent. The person in question is 31 years old. He may be a great player, he is even an MVP caliber player. But he is not worth a 10 year contract. The Yankees offered a higher average annual value, connoted the increase guaranteed money. And how stupid is it to offer Robinson Cano 30 million a year for seven years? That is quite possibly the dumbest thing I've ever heard. The counteroffer that the Yankees were given was a 10 year $235 million deal. The Yankees were right in making the decision that they did. The Mariners offer this contract in an attempt to draw it premier player to Seattle. They are fully aware that the player is not going to be worth it for the last half of the contract, but they don't care. I do find it rather hilarious that the same people who were complaining about the long-term deals given to Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez are recommending the Yankees do the same for Robinson can know. A little consistency would help
