Victorino just had thumb surgery. It drives me frigging crazy when players have surgery in the middle of the offseason. Why risk screwing things up for the season? All offseason surgeries should happen in October/November. This should be a universally accepted rule.

Agreed. Why would he wait until mid December to have surgery?

Not to sound like a dick, but I imagine his doctors have a valid reason for that.

I'm just curious. I'm not trying to get on his case.

The Red Sox's medical staff has no credibility. We see it all the time. The Red Sox medical staff really likes the "wait-and-see" approach and after waiting a few months, they end up opting for surgery anyway, and the team loses a player for far longer than if they went with the surgery approach.

If he went to get 2nd or 3rd opinions, which he should by all means - I do get it. And the player has to be the one to agree to things.

Agreed on the Red Sox medical staff and their lack of credibility. Also as in my previous experience with any hand injury, the doctors usually wait until the swelling goes down. But that being said its December 17th, it is far too long after the season to be making the decision on having surgery or not. The swelling would of went down as much as it was going to weeks ago. Just another example of the medical staff dropping the ball.

None of you are doctors, and you barely have any information on his injury. Why the rush to judgment?

As I said, the Red Sox have shot themselves in the foot with similar courses of actions many many many times in the past 5-6 years. I could go back and dig up 6-7 instances of the Red Sox medical staff waiting on surgery, and losing significant on-field times for players.

Well, a lot of people on here do have PHDs in dipshitology. Also, it's the offseason and people will grab onto anything just to have a reason to be upset.

Ok, go for it. It has to be the dr's decision causing the delay rather than the player. Therefore, Buch wouldn't count.

Our medical staff has always been an operation of quacks. The worst example that I can remember was many years ago with Tim Naehring. I believe that he had hyperextended his elbow so they needed to tighten up a ligament and re-route a nerve. It was viewed as routine and he was supposed to be as good as new for Spring Training. He showed up for Spring Training and he could not straighten his arm. He couldn't throw or hit with his crooked arm. He could never regain enough flexsibility to straighten his arm. His promising career was over.

Man, I don't know what your problem is with me, but I'm tired of it. Welcome to my ignore list.

His schtick is criticizing other posters, not their opinions. Ignore is a great feature. :)

Well, it was a general comment about the board, not a direct attack on you.

Guess we won't be getting those 6-7 examples anytime soon?

It works so well that you can't seem to stop posting about me. Maybe I'm the "must read" around here?

You seem to really think this board sucks, mvp. The other day you were talking about new posters not being able to form sentences, now you're saying the board is full of dipshits. Why the need to keep taking potshots at most of the rest of the board?

On a baseball note... Matt Thornton signs a 2 year - 7MM deal with the Yankees. Another example of the Yankees signing another former Red Sox player.

Apparently on the Yankees check list is 1. Former Red Sox player and 2. Over the age of 30 looks like the Spankees needs to add a retirement home in the clubhouse alone with a therapist to talk to the players when they hit their mid life crisis. I think its hilarious they just keep getting older and older.

7 million for Thornton seems crazy considering that not only did he miss the playoff roster, he was replaced by Franklin Morales.

7MM is an overpay. But that is the situation the Yankees are in now. Players know that the Yankees want to win and will overpay to do so.

The Yankees are in bad shape and I love every minute of it. They lost Cano, overpaid on Ells and McCann, resigned an old Kuroda, and are trying to fill the 2B void with anyone who can put on a glove. Now they are waiting on Tanaka who may be a bust or not even be posted. Also i hope A-Rod wins his appeal and the Yankees have to pay him. Life is good in Beantown coming off a World Series and the Yankees are in total disarray I'm soo happy right now.

Thornton? Well, he's certainly old enough to play for the Yankees. LOL. Showed nothing in Boston.

The Yankees are an embarrassment to NY--a mostly ragtag lineup of castoffs and a $190 mil payroll. Fans can't be happy. The over the hill gang.

The Yankees have been hilariously dithering with the luxury tax - they want to have their cake and eat it too in way that their offseason has turned out TOTALLY incoherent. They have been both big spenders and penny pinchers at the same time, a hard double for sure. IF they made their shopping spree AND said screw the luxury tax and kept Cano - this offseason would have been a success ... one they'd pay for down the line, but it would have made a genuine difference in the standings and in their playoff prospects and thus in their local revenue generators. But when you take their +'s and remove Cano, the best player of the various comings and goings, you are left with the Yankees paying a net of $29 million to field the same team performancewise that they had in 2013.

I can't speak for the medical staffs of other teams but what I've seen from ours the past half-dozen years they make incompetence look good in comparison. They have done more of their share of misdiagnosing injuries and it got so bad the players started ignoring them and simply getting second opinions. The departed Jacoby Ellsbury didn't trust them at all, and to make matters worse they screwed up royally with Dustin Pedroia in 2010 and nearly threatened his career. They've made some changes the past few years but it still seems we have a pack of second raters charged with keeping our team healthy.

Well it was probably your turn on his s*** list Pal. 700 hitter went through it, then it was my turn and there was someone else after me. I wouldn't worry about it. mvp is a Jeckel and Hyde type of guy. You never know if he is going to give you a nod or the club. At least he is a terrific Red Sox fan though. Anyway don't give it another thought. You know you stand real with me and most of the rest of the crowd.

And if you find any reason they are doing this Geritol movement please get back and enlighten me. Frankly, I can't figure what the Yankees have up their sleeves.

So am I Dupree----I'm still in orbit after what happened last October. I do think I have a hunch what's going on with the Yankees. This has to do with their front office. I really believe they are totally bent out of shape by what they saw our team do this past season. They must have thought we'd be on our asses for the next three or four seasons so if they fell a little short they'd have us down there with them. No can do boballo!!!!! We came all the way back and won the WS and it totally discombobulated them. I really think that is what happened and what's happening with that crowd over in the Bronx. I find it a real hoot.

I don't have you on ignore. We have been coexisting, because I thought you had me on ignore, so I almost never reply to your posts. Let's continue with that, since it has been working so well.

They can have him, and yes, I agree that they have over-paid for him.

When you pay 7 M to a guy like Thorton, speaks volumes of two things: stupidity and wealth LOL!

If thats true then they are idiots because they are doing the total opposite of the team that got them discombobulated. And yes, its fun to watch.
