Now you're really full of s***.....The best QB ever to play in the NFL is Joe Montana. Look it up.

ha. Unitas is the best I've seen in 60 years. Plenty of great ones, too, mind you. Graham, Starr, Bradshaw...

I remember the draft when Montana was picked in the 3rd or 5th round? Looked like a 1st rounder to me at Notre Dame. Ditto for Marino at Pittsburgh. Right on both counts. Can't figure why HOF QBs are so undervalued in the draft. Brady, too. They draft a guy 5th to run a franchise?

You ought to practice a little what you preach Mark. Your love affair with Carlos Santana is off the rocks. He is NOT a good catcher, he is NOT a good first baseman and therefore a liability in the field. There is always a chance he could suddenly erupt but since his trade to Cleveland for Casey Blake some years ago he has never has that breakout season so many of you think he is capable of if your love affair with this guy is of any indication. His value to the Red Sox would have to be as a monster hitter, someone capable of going something like 310-35-100 to make up for his defensive deficiencies. Now the Guardians are trying to see if he can play third base. Talk about panic.....if can't be a good defensive first baseman he can't be a third baseman either. He is a DH and nothing more.

Fred, I do not have a love affair with Santana ... I like him as a 1B not a catcher. If Boston does not sign Napoli that is. There are also certain prospects that I would not include in any deal for him. For you to say that the kid cannot hit is plain wrong. Lighten up a little.

Besides Drew, the Red Sox's free agents haven't been getting much interest out there. Despite the rush on catchers, Salty is still out there, and the Twins just shot their load on Nolasco. Napoli's biggest suiter decided to grab Fielder instead. Ellsbury is priced out. I know it is early, but other teams don't seem to like these guys. Edited by Palodios

Well I guess we will have to bring Napoli, Ellsbury and Drew back for a repeat. We can replace Salty with Hanigan.

My bad Mark.....All this stuff at the expense of Napoli is really taking its toll on me. It is as if we are pretty much expecting to kiss him off, which to me would be a bad mistake. We need him to play first base for us. I can see Santana as DH for us sometime down the road after Papi retires but he doesn't bring enough defense at catcher or first base for me. To me, all we really need is to resign Napoli, get a half-decent catcher, a utility player like Bloomquist, who can play both outfield and infield by the way, and another good reliever. I think with that we can make a move next season for an AL East Title and then more.

"If this Napoli thing blows up in Lucchino and Henry's faces as so much has the past few years, they better get their asses in gear and sign both Hamilton and Swisher and to hell with the money. We have it; we need to now spend it, and then use a trade or sign a fa pitcher or two. I cannot believe the total incompetence of those who run the Red Sox. It is a wonder they weren't exposed for the boobs they are long before this."

So, you'll act like an ******* just because a player you like hasn't resigned yet? Fred, get over yourself. I'm glad they didn't go with your plan B from last year.

I know this is a board where there is a lot of brain storming and opinions fly every which way but I can't for the life of me why so many here think that Carlos Santana is the answer to a maiden's prayer. First of all those who say he is similar to Victor Martinez are full of s***. Martinez in an authentic 300 plus hitter with 20-25 home run power and he has been consistent in that since he came up with the Guardians. Santana has never hit 300 and most likely never will. He is also a sup-par defensive catcher as well as a sub par first baseman. It is that reason the Guardians signed a Yankee RF in Nick Swisher and quickly made him their first baseman. Now they want to see if Santana can play third base. See a pattern here? Also, though it is a strong anti-Dodger bias of mine, I have always believed the Red Sox should stay far away from any player on that team or one raised in their system. The idea of trading Renaudo, Middlebrooks and some other player for Santana is so ridiculous it almost makes lost for words.

I was going to let this go but, so much of this asinine that I had to interject. The sox most glaring holes this year are a 1 year stop gap at catcher and a future 1B which Martinez would fill perfectly. And to compare Santana to Martinez is about an accurate comparison as you can make(below average catcher that his bat kept in the lineup), Martinez has a career obp of .369, while Santana's is .367. And the reason Santana is working at 3b in the Dominican is because Swisher can't play the OF anymore and Gomes is an allstar type Catcher. The Guardians are exploring every avenue to get Santana's bat in the lineup and I personally think that it speaks very highly of him if they think he can play 3b.

I don't know if you have some personal issue with Santana but, It's like he took a dump on your front lawn and you wont let it go. Let it go.

No problemo Fred. We have no control over what the FO does ... no control what-so-ever. The fact of the matter is that our FO deserves the benefit of doubt on the players they sign. We are in a great position one way or another, with or without Napoli. We have 3-5 players on the farm ... Owens, Barnes, Cecchini, etc. plus JBJ, WMB, & Bogaerts who should begin 2014 season in the starting lineup. If our FO shows good judgement we can be well positioned in 2015 and beyond. Should we be able to land a capable catcher like Hanigan we may have 4 new faces in the starting line-up out of the 8. Nothing lasts forever. Think about this ... if we do not sign Napoli we could end up with only 3 players who were up for the entire 2013 season on the diamond in 2014. This is a total makeover. The chemistry was great last year and it was my favorite Sox season ever but this is the nature of the game now. If we did not have JBJ and Bogaerts I would bet my last dollar that we would be extending Drew and Ellsbury. I think that Nap's will be back on a 3 year deal.

According to Lauber, our FO is considering Lav as our primary catcher next season. If Hanigan costs us only junk prospects, he's welcome otherwise, go with RL/Ross

Teams will run like crazy on Lavarnway. Hanigan should not cost all that much. IMO it will be a better play. I would have no issues letting Lavarnway give 1B a shot if there is an opening.

I wonder if that's all a ruse to get the Red Sox off guard. Seems to be there should be a hell of a lot more interest in our FA than I've heard so far. Maybe the MF Yankees are laying down in the weeds like the sneaky bastards that they are and will strike when we least expect and take two of them...Drew and Ellsbury. Then again, how interested is Cherington in taking all of them back?

Good piece of research to nail my ass mvp. Yes, I said those things and it is embarrassing reading them now. I've had my mea culpa where Cherington is concerned and I expect you to keep that in your diddy bag as well. There were a lot of pissed off fans after the 2012 season and if you weren't one of them you didn't have a pulse. It turned out well for all of us. As for my take on Napoli, I'm convinced he's the guy we need to resign above all others. Whose yours? Santana? Hanigan?

"WHICH MARTINEZ WOULD FIT PERFECTLY?" If you want to slam me for my opinions at least know what the f*** you're talking about. Just for the record, you meant your boy Santana!!!!!!

I would just like to see the Red Sox give Lav a shot at making the team next season---as a catcher, reserve catcher, reserve first baseman, pinch hitter, whatever. I think he gives us enough offensive potential to make up for some of his defensive shortcomings. I don't know where Lauber got his information but I hope he is right.

I wish all of you out there a very happy Thanksgiving. We raise a lot of hell on this board and many of us call out and get called out as well, but we are all in this together. I think right now we all feel a helluva lot better than we did at this time last year. Whatever happens during this off season I think it is fair to say the team is in pretty good hands.

He's talking about the Martinez-Santana comparison first, and then about Santana by himself. Your reading comprehension is terrible.

Buster Olney also suggesting the Salty market has been weak. He speculates it may be related to his medical records.

He also admitted he had no info on Salty medicals...why not just say 'I'm guessing my ass off like everybody else'. :D

Well, I had a pulse and wasn't pissed off because I saw that by trading Gonzo, CC and Beckett that they were stearing the boat in the right direction. I was excited to see how Ben would construct the team once Larry took a step backwards.

I would want Napoli back. Santana can come if they are going to split him between C/1b, but he's not a priority for me. I leave room for Vasquez in 2015.

Almost everyone has Napoli as their first option, and are exploring and discussing other options, as is their prerogative on a Red Sox discussion board. Fred not only doesn't want to allow people to express their opinions, but he also creates opinions for them. I have spent weeks mentioning Hanigan and Napoli as my favorite C and 1B options respectively, yet Fred has somehow turned that into Santana and Hart/Beltran respectively, just so he can be an ******* and call me out on a constant basis. Unbelievable.

Well my favorite part of Fred is that even though he hates the Dodgers so much, that all his scouting teports start with "when I saw this guy play for the Dodgers..."

But since it's Thanksgiving, I will say I'm most thankful for Ben's glorious rack.

Happy Thanksgiving to all my friends on this forum. As Sox fans we have a lot to be grateful for .... let's see BC ... Sox Ownership ... Koji ... Pedey ... Papi ... Lester ... Our 2013 World Series Championship. I am grateful to share my opinions with you all and to learn a lot from your opinions as well. Have a great holiday.

The market for Salty might be weak because he gave up more stolen bases of all catchers.

Dude, if you had Fred's balls any more in your mouth, I'd think you were his gay lover.
