It does help to rally around something. This year, it was the Marathon bombing. Plus the beards. Those beards were a uniting factor, too. Just like the old Dirt Dogs. Builds team character. These guys have an identity now. You don't want to lose that.

Oh, sure, there's some unquantifiable something to be said for identity and team unity, and you can get that from all kinds of stuff. Little things like ridiculous facial hair, or big things like being part of a city's response to a tragedy. What drives me nuts is the conspiracy theorizing -- the idea that MLB pulled strings to give the Sox the title as a sop to Boston in the wake of the bombing.

I just tore out all the pictures of Fenway Park and its history from 1912 to 2012, and started putting up games of the World Series and ALCS, and will finish that part of it tomorrow. I will also be putting up pictures of the starting lineup and key subs and pitchers I clipped out of the 2013 yearbook. I have a question, though. I know just about every team that's won the WS in each year but not 1913. Anyone know who won that year? Was it the Athletics?

Wow. That's a big project. All I've done is cut out every Sox related story from yesterday's sports section and tape it on to the wall. When the next Sports Illustrated comes, I'll do the same thing with that.

If that were true, why did my beloved Bruins lose to Chicago. Some people will belly ache about anything. We're World MF Champions!! They can deal with it. The Sox rule!

Everyone with the "3 world championships in 10 years"

Don't sell them short, it's 3 in 9 years.

Math? If they won in 2004 and 2005, no one would say two in one year. It's 10.

Now please my friends promise me this. That most of you won't disappear until next Spring Training. Let's keep in touch on this board through the off and hot stove league season. I have a feeling a lot of stuff with the various and sundry teams is going to go down----a lot of activity.

Ha ha ha...are you kidding Fred? I'll be here just about every day. Red Sox are 24/7/365 for me and many others. We'll be here. We're nuts.

ha. Doesn't sound like it's possible. tell the umpires who called that obstruction play in game 3.

I do believe there is cynicism about Boston sports teams in the media--largely in the networks based in NY (CBS, Yahoo, ESPN, etc), their main market. Probably due to competition for the New England market. NY teams get first play on the League TV channels and network TV feature games--plus some LA. That's pretty obvious by now--at least outside of New England.

I heard it mentioned on TV that Tim McCarver was in the HOF. He wasn't that good as a player, so I checked it out. He was elected to the broadcasters wing of the HOF last year. The thing is, nowadays, the media doesn't make any distinction between media types and ballplayers who are in the HOF. They should. It just shows how much TV has taken control of sports due to the immense revenues. Nowadays, the path to the HOF is often easier for a ballplayer who gets into TV broadcasting or analysis.

It was a perfect season in so many ways. In game 6, the cards made very hard contact against Lackey in the first 2 innings, but almost all of those balls found our fielders. I was very worried when Farrell left Lackey in to face Holliday in the 7th inning with 2 men on base. Holliday was one of the few Cards hinters that scared me. A long ball would have made the score 6-4. Luckily, Holliday only walked and Taz got the next hitter. I was also worried when Taz was replaced in the 8th inning by Workman after facing just hitter. The first two hitters hit the ball very hard against Workman but they found our fielders. He finished out the inning and koji shut them down in the 9th. What did you guys think of Farrell's moves?

he was the genius since the moves worked out as planned. ;)

and we didn't have any option

I liked the fact that Lackey wanted to stay there and I was okay with it, since he pitched really well to Holiday. but he ended walking him.

When I saw Workman come out for the 8th I thought 'shades of Bronson Arroyo in 2004 ALCS Game 6'. This wasn't quite as shocking considering it was a 5 run lead.

Workman did great and justified Farrell's faith.

It was interesting how Farrell used Tazawa in the postseason - 8 of his outings were one batter only.

I was just wondering what people thought about those decisions when they were made before the outcome was known. The people sitting around me at the game were questioning the move. A lot of people were starting to give Lackey an ovation assuming that Farrell was giving him the hook before Holliday pitched.

The biggest questionable managerial decision by a manager in the Series was Matheny waiting until game 6 to have his pitchers work around Ortiz. I was amazed at how often he was challenged during the series, especially in the 3 games in St. Louis when Ortiz had very little protection behind him.

Workman and Doubront were lights out in the postseason. Both were better than Taz imo.

Lackey didn't have much left in him and taz or workman were the only options. .. he could have tried Koji for a 7 out save but that would not have helped in case...just in case somehow they went to game 7...

I have been a fan of workman and Doubie as bullpen arms especially to get some crucial outs and stretch more than 1 inning

The thing I don't like about these questions is that we don't know what Farrell said to Lackey and Ross. Lackey walked him. Suppose Farrell said "fine you can pitch to him but I either want him out or walked". Puts another man on base but would have taken the chance of a bomb pretty much off the table unless Lackey made the kind of mistake a ML pitcher even tiring should not make if so instructed.

It is pretty interesting that during the regular season as Workman was moved closer to the end of the game and high leverage situations, he did not fair so well. Maybe he just ran out of regular season. He surely did better in the post season with much more pressure on him to succeed.

I think Farrell was wise to keep the number of pitches Taz was throwing down in the post season as he definitely faded late in the regular season.

Yeah the A's won in 1913 Fred

Thanks Ellsbury. I just took a wild guess and eliminated as many teams as I could. Funny---I could tell you who won the WS every year since they started playing it except for 1913. Somehow that always slipped by me. Thanks again.

Fred was too busy with college to watch that year! :D

College was a helluva long time ago at that Youk. Tonight my wife and I went and saw Last Vegas in our local movie house. Four old codgers trying to regain some of their youth. Though I work out regularly and vigorously I'm still a new 73 years old so I can put myself in their place. I don't know how old you are but if I could live my years over again I would want to relive my 30's. I think that is the best time in one's life.

Fred with the quintuple post, crowning achievement of internet forum participation. Congrats!

It probably gets annoying to some but I have to pick my spots when I can get on, and I don't like to miss all the stuff that goes one here. Just for the record, I finished putting up my highlights of the 2013 season in my Red Sox room and will have to make some room there if they win another title before too much longer. A labor of love for sure.

I just asked my wife Linda how I felt so she could tell me so I could tell you 700. Pissed off would be putting it mildly. I was screaming at the TV and calling Farrell every name in the book when he pulled what I called a mini Grady Little and allowed an obviously tired John Lackey to stay in the game. Screw sentiment; we had to win the game and we had two fresh pitchers who could nail it down----neither of who was named Workman.

LOL!! When Farrell left him in the game, I looked st my friend and said "I hope this isn't Farrell's Grady Little moment." Thank goodness that it wasn't.
