I think they lose in the first series. The whole season appears to be a fluke, and hate to say it, but they have gotten pretty lucky with many of thier game.

I was going to come in here to say that this was the dumbest post ever used to start a thread on Talksox, and then, SoxSport, you actually went and made it somehow worse.

Yes, the Sox are really good. I think the whole "first place in the AL East" and "top five in almost every statistical category worth mentioning" things really puts them in the "good" column. Teams do not get lucky in some games and translate that into handily winning the toughest division in baseball. The Sox have already proven they can beat the Yankees, Rays, Guardians, Rangers, A's, Tigers, Orioles, and anyone else when they absolutely need to. They beat Scherzer, they beat Price, they beat Sabathia (who hasn't?), and they beat Masterson, not to mention just about every other halfway decent pitcher on postseason-bound or postseason-hopeful teams. Calling this season a fluke is ridiculous. This season is a result of really good baseball being played by a lot of great players. And to follow that up with saying that Oakland is the big obstacle to the World Series is even more ridiculous. Right now, every team offers the same difficulty to the Sox. And that amount is none. The Sox have beaten everyone and have made it clear they can and will continue to beat everyone. They are the favorites this season because of good f***ing baseball, not luck.

This would have been an somewhat intere...

Wait, let me rephrase that..

This would have been a barely relevant thread if you'd actually managed to include some sort of reasoning -- why you think the run this year was fluky or lucky. Stating an opinion, and following it by "thought?!" betrays a complete lack of, well, thought, on your part. If you want to take an unpopular opinion, fine, it's what this forum is made of. but show your work.

This Sox team did not "luck" into the Playoffs as the Champs of the East... They remind me of my '02 Angels; clutch offense with clutch pitching performances. I think they can play with anybody this Postseason. Of course, the A's are still a huge under-the-radar challenge.

*edit- If this topic had been my first post (like the author), I would expect to be banned as a pure troller.

Thanks everyone!! This was a social experiment for a digital studies research at University of Wisconsin. Thanks for the responses, and GO SOX....they are looking great to make a long run. What a tough division this year!

Digital research studies? What is that, the study of having a thumb up your ass? Edited by a700hitter

Studying the effects of telling a community of red sox fans on a red sox message board that the Sox are not that good..... if you really could not predict the outcome, you probably really are a university researcher. Thanks for using tax money on such important work.

Talk about extremes. MB4Life and Sox Sport put the Red Sox in the gutter and YOUK puts them in the penthouse. Which way to go? Look, their 20-8 start out of the gate might have been a fluke, and drawing from last year's debacle it could have been. Now with only five games remaining in the regular season I don't see how anyone can say that their 95-62 record is any kind of fluke. They taken on all comers, stumbled and bumbled along the way, made their way through a couple of squalls, but for the most part they have taken all the comers on and have prevailed. They have owned the Yankees, beaten the Rays and Jays, taken care of the Guardians and Tigers and have gotten even with the Rangers. Their record after 157 games cannot be ruled a fluke even by an anti-Red Sox contingent, let alone Red Sox fans.

Where I do find some agreement with MB4 and Sox Sport is that if we play the A's or Tigers or Rays the series will be challenging and we could wind up on the short end just as we could take care of them and advance to the WS. Those playoff series are crapshoots, three out of five and four out of seven. If our pitchers are dealing, our hitters are performing and our defense allowing the opposition only three outs in an inning our chances are as good as anyone else. It depends how we're playing when the post-season bell chimes.

1. Yes, they are really good - the top scoring margin in the league is your best evidence there. They have had the Pythagorean record (for what its worth) of .626 which is actually better than what they have done (in other words - based on a crude metric they have actually been unlucky). 21-19 in 1-run games ... you expect those games to be a coin flip, so no special luck there.

2. They might lose the first series anyway, and it would not change #1. This has been the best team in the AL - let that sink in - and the ability to win 11 more games does nothing to alter that. Yeah it'll suck to not have the World Series under our belts, flags fly forever and all - but we know that the best team in the field has won the title only about half the time or so. This isn't the NBA. The biggest mismatch in the playoffs is still roughly a 60-40 proposition. There are no REAL upsets.

At some point in your college years, you should look into grammar. I'm not certain, but I think it might be considered important in research projects, especially to the people who are grading them.

I think we could have expected something similar to this from someone like say, lord snow... but not you unknown poster! How could this be!?

Also, it's nice to know the university of wisconsin cares about researching something other than whether or not consuming Aaron Rodger's ejaculate will make someone better at sports.

Detroit and Oakland offer the biggest challenge, yet they'll likely only have to face one of them. They shouldn't have a problem with the WC since their best pitcher would be burned and the teams in the WC hunt are pretty one dimensional.

Yeah ... this team is really good. In fact our record could be even better with more saves early in the season. If we play to our best level this season we will win the World Series.

Troll post is troll. I think people should be required to have 100 posts before they are allowed to start new topics in the forum.

Red Sox have the Best record in MLB. Please crawl back under your troll bridge.

Anyone else want to talk real baseball? Because this thread should have be locked so that real fans don't waste their time with it.

Ignore the troll. It's probably a bitter yankee fan just joined the forum to stir up $%!# cos his team is out of the playoffs and he's J-E-A-L-O-U-S.

This is the dumbest thread on the forum. What more does the Sox have to do to get respect? Just stupid....has to come from a Yankees fan

Come on guys, this was an important psychological research project. Have a little respect for struggling graduate students.

All kidding aside Youk, do we really know how good the Red Sox can be as they enter the playoffs? At their best they can take them all on and get the job done, but we have seen them three different times this season going to temporary doldrums. We need to get our starting and relief pitching along with our offense operating in sync because then we are at least as good as anyone else. They cannot afford to have any part of their game come up a cropper. I see many of the teams pretty evenly matched IN BOTH LEAGUES.

The NL has closed the gap that has formed over the last 10 years. But it is not shut. Boston and Detroit are the two best teams in baseball and have proven it (Oakland is close). It don't mean a damn thing in October because that's how the game works - but I'd still pick an AL team blindly over an NL team. The ballpark edge an AL team has is profound - although any best of seven is basically coin flip.

Yes, they can win it all. Especially if they can score some runs for Lackey, Lester. I'm not too concerned with the pitching, but some run support.
