Red Sox agree on contract extension with Pedroia

Dustin Pedroia is likely to end his career as a member of the Red Sox.

The second baseman has agreed to terms on a 7-year, $100 million contract extension that would take him through the 2021 season, at which point he will be 38-years-old.

Pedroia is signed through the 2014 season. The Red Sox held a team option worth $11 million for 2015 but will forfeit that under the terms of the new contract. Starting in 2015, Pedroia will receive an average of $14.28 million a season.

Pedroia also has full no-trade protection. It is the first $100 million deal for a second baseman in baseball history.

The Red Sox had dual motivations to sign Pedroia now rather than waiting for his current deal to expire. From owner John Henry down throughout the organization, Pedroia is regarded as a model player both for his performance and personality. He has become the de facto captain of the team and, along with designated hitter David Ortiz, the face of the franchise.

The Red Sox also should benefit by signing Pedroia before Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano becomes a free agent after the season and sets a new standard for second basemen.

Although Pedroia compares favorably to Cano statistically and is 10 months younger, Cano could realize an average annual value of close to $20 million.

News of the Pedroia extension came from WEEI.com.

It certainly is a reasonable deal. Pedroia doesn't just talk the talk, he walks the walk. He wants to finish his career with the Sox and he's not obsessed with the last dollar - he knows he's making a vast amount of it as it is and he's not complaining.

Lol VA was just as excited as me. Mods please delete my thread and keep this one. Thanks and so happy for Pedroia!!

Oh sorry! Didn't see yours! Love Pedey!!!!

I love Pedey, but I thought people here thought that our FO should not be giving out $100 million contracts. I hope he stays healthy and productive.

You've seen what happened when we loaded up on monster contracts the past few years. I can't speak for everyone, but I do believe most posters don't want to go that route again. Pedroia is an exception. Dude plays his heart out every single game, every single play. He is well loved by Boston and I am glad he will be with us forever. You never question this bad ass mofo

Serious question. Did anyone actually say that?

I normally get nervous when I see triple digit extensions, but that's more often with pitching, and especially with true free agent contracts (players that we buy from other teams rather than talent we raise through our own team/system) I like the signing/extension for Pedroia though, he deserves it and he'll be a valuable piece for our franchise down the road.

Long term contracts aside for the moment, I think what they did with Pedroia was absolutely the right thing to do. Dustin busts his ass every time out, loves playing for the Red Sox, is not intimidated by the demanding crowds in Boston and has become the co-face of the franchise along with Papi. He can hit and he can field and he can run and he is a competitive fireball. Now for those long term contracts......for Pedroia BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is not a bad deal. Seven years is a bit long but it's only 14.3M per year. If it was for 20M a season I'd be much more worried. I hope Pedroia learns to save his body going forward. If he can keep producing until about 35 and then start to decline it wouldn't be too bad. Overall I'm glad to see he will seemingly finish his career in Boston, congrats to him and his family :D

I agree, in terms of setting an example, he was the perfect candidate to give this kind of extension to.

It's a damn shame you can't just be happy for something without having the throw out random negative barbs at random posters.

It's a damn shame that you can't stop poking at me like the mods have asked. This is the third time from you, but I will continue to show great restraint. Enjoy the game.

If anyone ever deserved big money, it would be Pedey. I don't think it will affect him. He's already making big money--more than he can ever spend. I hope his wife doesn't read this.

This will look like a bargain when Cano, who is a year older, gets paid nearly twice as much for the same level of production at the same position. Since Pedroia's first full year, he he's compiled a 33.3 WAR to Cano's 32.5. Which even if you don't take WAR as a gospel, strongly suggests his value is at the very least similar.

When Longoria signed his contract I said the Red Sox would likely do the same for Pedey. Very happy about this. Great news. Last time we discussed this many talksox folks said it would never happen because Pedey plays too hard and would burnout in the next few seasons...Let's just hope that he stays healthy and doesn't self destruct by playing every inning like a maniac.

The sox got a steal, mostly because they owned Pedey for awhile more and negotiated with that power. I wish some of our FO guys would do that. How great would it have been to have negotiated with Cano during 2010 instead of after 2013

I think the Yankees have created an unfortunate culture where virtually all of their players expect to be paid at or above market value or they consider it "disrespectful". Many of their current players and team leader such as Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera have said as much publicly. The Red Sox have had their fair share of these types of players, such as Johnny Damon, Jonathan Papelbon and David Ortiz. But the Red Sox have no problem letting popular players leave if they're asking for more money than the team thinks they're worth.

And it had worked for the Yankees up until other teams starting catching up to them in terms of money in the pocket. Now that teams in LA, Boston, Chicago, etc are willing to throw around money up towards the level of the Yankees, they have to change their MO.

Nah, Ortiz was on a below market deal for a long time. His contract hasn't exceeded his production, even now.

And up until he signed a two year deal last offseason, he was constantly complaining about his contract and the Red Sox not showing him respect.

The rules of the game have changed. If the Yankees want to remain competitive under the new CBA rules and with other teams competing with them financially, they really need to clean house and start building from within. The only players the Yankees have under team control next year who will be under the age of 30 are David Robertson (29 years old, free agent after 2014), Michael Pineda, Shawn Kelly, Ivan Nova, Eduardo Nunez and Francisco Cervelli. And their farm system is mediocre, most people have it ranked somewhere around 11th-15th in baseball. They have no core to build around and they don't have unlimited money to spend on international free agents and draft picks anymore. If they want to get better any time soon, they really should sell at the deadline.
