Well I was wrong...took two batters this time.

Now we will really get a test of Farrell's oft discussed stubbornness. Will he dare bring Bailey out to close again?

However it should not have cost us a game to figure this out. Bailey should never have been brought out tonight. I really don't care who Farrell brought in instead....Bailey should have been done already. But to e honest he STILL may not be done...even after this fiasco.

The only one I really blame Farrell on was when he took Doubront out and Bailey gave up a homer on the first batter. In this case it was against the middle/bottom of Detroit's order in a spacious park so I don't blame him for going with Bailey here.

That said he should definitely be relegated to set up and someone like Tazawa or Uehara should be given a chance to close.

Bradford on Bailey: "He runs into problems with his fastball. He gets too amped up.

After two batters, Bradford on Bailey: "I think you'll be seeing changes before too long."

Amped up? How about he sucks a bag full of dicks!!

He should. He doesn't walk the park. He only given up 1 HR with a lead all year.

That's an understatement, Koji has one of the best K/BB ratios I have ever seen. The guy can clearly pitch.

Anyone want Paps now?

Some dared to compare Bailey with Pap.

Not sure why Bailey is still closing in this team. He is a piece of s***.

This is a huge opportunity for Bailey to take the glare of attention off of himself. It's a big ballpark. They have to crush it to knock it out of the yard. The big hitters are out of the way
No ballpark is big enough for this guy.

Tom Caron to Jim Rice. If the Red Sox have a 1 run lead in the 9th inning tomorrow night"

Jim Rice without missing a beat: "No."

This bum has already given up 6 HRs -- a career high.

I think the majority of us are on the "keep Andrew Bailey from closing" bandwagon, but that's not the same bandwagon as the "let's spend money and prospects to get Papelbon" bandwagon.

What I don't get as far as the closer arguments is why the only two options are Bailey and Papelbon. If Bailey never closes again, why is Papelbon even being discussed? Is he literally the only person in baseball capable of closing?

This is all so much ********. Look at what Bailey has done and what he is doing. He no longer throws anything but FB and his FB is simply not that good. He does not throw his secondary pitches any longer cause it simply hurts too much and his elbow won't take it. That said his FB is not good enough for him to just go out there and throw it. He does not even try to throw it over the plate! He is done and has been done. Nobody especially within the Sox organization itself is willing to admit it...but he is done.

His out-pitch was his slider, but he can't throw that anymore I guess because it causes strain on his elbow.

Only two options? Nobody has said that they are the only two option for closing Youk, as far as I know. :dunno:

Bailey is like a re-run of Heathcliff Slocumb if anyone here remembers that bum.

Who could forget Heathcliff? And Duquette traded him for Varitek and Lowe. Still unbelievable after all these years.

Urbina was fun too.

OMG, your obsession with Papelbon is unhealthy... just sayin. ;)

Tazawa or Kojji plz

Seems like the only options. Who was the last Japanese closer in the MLB? I can't think of one.

If you can get a young Varitek and Lowe for Bailey, you'd take it
Slocumb netted us two huge pieces to the final puzzle. Amazing. That was the best Red Sox trade in my lifetime.

Uehara himself has closed. Fujikawa got the role for the Cubs but immediately got injured, so technically it would be him.

I do not know him.

Is he this bad? Really? Wow.

You want to win this year, Farrell? Then don't go off and say 'we've got some work to do with Bailey' and then put him in a 1 run game. You want to work on Bailey? Do it when it's irrelevant. In the 6th inning of a 5 run game. Let the pitchers who can at least compete have a shot at the 9th. Bailey didnt even record an out.

You want to win now?? You send down Wilson (Beato will be gone when Webster pitches on Saturday), you call up RDLR, you give the 9th to Taz and the 7th to RDLR/Breslow. The 8th to Uehara/Miller, and the 9th to Tazawa. You give the crap innings to Bailey until you've 'done your work on him'.

Pathetic management. Absolutely abysmal.

Bailey should not have pitched tonight. Not only is he struggling, but he's also terribly overworked with all of the high-pitch innings from his recent slump.

Some still think that pitching in the 9th is just the same than pitching in other inning. Probably Farrell is one of those

.....because it is. Right now, Bailey couldn't get anyone out in any inning.

How is pitching with a one-run lead against the meat of the order harder than pitching the ninth against the bottom? Honest question.
