Some still think that pitching in the 9th is just the same than in other inning. Probably Farrell is one of those

This is not even close to what I was describing. I wouldn't care if Bailey threw in the 9th in an 8 run game.

It's the high leverage situations. Those could be in the 7th, 8th, 9th, whenever.

Bailey should not have pitched tonight. Not only is he struggling, but he's also terribly overworked with all of the high-pitch innings from his recent slump.

Correct...no way he should have been out there tonight. I really have struggled all year with the way Farrell handles the pen and this mess with Bailey is maybe just the best example of it.

What the f*** is Bailey doing out there. He has one pitch that he is even willing to throw and he is not willing to throw it for strikes!!! That is the guy you throw out there to close...just give the Tigers the game and start fresh tomorrow if you are going to do that.

On top of everything else Farrell is talking nonsense. Bailey was "not up over the plate". Nothing was over the plate but everything Bailey threw was up.

.....because it is. Right now, Bailey couldn't get anyone out in any inning.

How is pitching with a one-run lead against the meat of the order harder than pitching the ninth against the bottom? Honest question.

I really want to see Bailey DL'd with a torn ego, and RDLR called up. I know it may stunt the development of RDLR, but you also may find that you've got an elite closer in the making too.

He needs to be up here tonight. Period.

I was just saying SFF

Right because it's not like pretty much every elite closer ever has not been a reliable setup man initially with some exceptions.. Even Papelbon and Mo set up before they closed.

High-leverage situations are high-leverage situations

Watching Napoli hit reminds me of the scene in Rookie of the Year when Rowengartner loses his arm strength and he looks to his mom in the stands and she says 'float it' and he does, and he strikes out the fat hitter.

On a related note, Bailey pitching reminds me of Rookie of the year, when he does have his arm strength and said hitter crushes one and stops and says 'I eat fastballs for breakfast kid.'

BL. We need a closer badly. Hopefully the Taz/Koji/Miiller experiment works out for us.

Farrell is starting to remind me of FrancoMa more and more every time I see and watch that son of a bitch. What the f##k is he thinking? Is it more of "I DONT WANT TO LOSE HIM" s***? I had enough of that from Tito. Bailey must not close again PERIOD and I don't want to hear any Pollyanna ******** to the contrary, not the way I feel right now. This loss is going to be devastating and I am of the belief that it may be the beginning of our collapse. There is no more crushing the hope of a team if you have a closer who can't close games and turns wins into defeats as that f***ing Bailey has been doing.

Get his ass out of that position Farrell, you filthy rotten no good son of a bitch. Sorry guys and gals, but I just had to get this off my chest.

At least I won in my parlay bet, I bet on Red Sox PLB -180 +1.5, thanks God I was covered with a 1.5 R considering this kind of contingencies

 Fred, I guess you had to get that off your chest. Bailey is not a serviceable closer for this team. Changes will be made immediately, so don't worry about a collapse just yet. Lackey has been a big bright spot. A solid rotation is the biggest key. They need to find a guy to lock down games at the end.

An ESPN alert in my cell phone popped up saying that Farrell removed Bailey from the closer role. Thanks God we won't see this bum closing in this team again, at least in the short/mid term.

Fortunately, some like me dropped his ass so many weeks ago

Not sure whether Valverde is still closing in Detroit or not. He has sucked too this year.

The most frustrating part about last night's loss is that this is a tight, tight division. Farrell knew as well as anyone that Bailey is not even close to getting it done lately. Yet, he still puts him out there with a 1 run lead.

It's mind boggling, really.

Tazawa stats since 2012:

9.79K/9

0.94BB/9

10.38K/BB

1.89ERA

0.59HR/9

1.02WHIP

That isn't just good, it's insane.

You would think with Pap's success, they would have replaced him as closer from within.

The logical successor was Bard. Tazawa has now emerged as well. But the damage has been done.

Tito also got burned by going to the well too often with relievers gone sour. It's a conditioned reflex.

One should always worry about the standings.

Agree. I remember in recent years when we had weak starts and everybody said, don't worry, it is April. Don't worry, it is May. Don't worry, it is June, etc. and when September arrived we were eliminated already. A Win count the same in April and September.

You always have to worry about the standings. Look at Toronto, seems like they will bounce back

Why? It's not even halfway through the season.

Fans need something to worry/complain/bitch/talk about. Not to mention standings are crucial to determining the shape of the division, and perceptions of "buyers" and "sellers" come the trade deadline.

If fans want to worry about it, fine I guess. I just don't want the manager acting like every game is #162.

If you can't play .500 ball, the standings are irrelevant, like in 2012.

They were fine in 2011 until the very last week.

In 2010, they had a decimated roster and weren't expected to do anything.

They made the playoffs in 2009.

Can't say that I agree with your point.

Sometimes you will play 500 and sometimes 500. That's not the point at all. Point is that you have to go day to day and always aware in which position you are on regardless the month and adjust if something's wrong instead of saying, "don't worry, it's April" or react until September when could be late like happened to us ln recent years. A solid 2011 start could give us the POs. A solid 2012 start could have chenged the perspective, who knows. Accomplish short objectives drives you to make the big ones, so April is as important as September even in the standings; remember, in the end the sum of the W/L columns of each month gives you the final result.

Worry about your own team, dickwad. Such a little f***ing rat. Only show up when things go your way. Go f*** yourself.

RS305, I see that I'm not the only one on this board who has smoke coming out of his ears today. I predicted on another board that this loss last night could break us for the season, so devastating a loss it was. As for our Yankee friend, keep in mind that he IS, after all, a Yankee fan and would never any more feel sorry for us as we are when the Yankees go down to defeat as they did last night.

As for Papelbon, you heard it here first......Mariano retires after this season and the the Yanks make a trade for, you guessed it, Papelbon. Meanwhile we have to bury Bailey so deep in s*** that he can never hurt our team again.
