To me, he looks like he has a full-blown case of Steameritis....and it is the 30th anniversary of the first reported case. Stay or go?

I put explore options, but that's more because of his injury history than because of his effectiveness.

Should also be an option in between "never" and "start."

I don't see them bringing in anyone until the trade deadline.

At this point, stay. Not like there are any other options. As long as the Sox stay in first, he's fine. If he has a direct impact on a rough patch, then maybe they think about getting rid of him.

I appreciate that. I know my sense of humor can Clash with some of you on occasion.

That's only because your phony Beatlemania has bitten the dust.

I'm torn. If he stays, there will be trouble. However, if he goes, there will be double.

You rock...

Casbah or otherwise.

In his last 4 save opportunities Bailey has 1 good save, 1 heart-attack save and 2 blown saves.

In his last 11 one-inning appearances he has no clean innings, and has given up 12 hits and 6 walks. He really has to get it together.

Yep. But the weird thing is this: He's a really, really good pitcher at the major league level.

3.22 era

1.21 whip

12.1 k/9

Those are terrific numbers. The problem has been his last 4 games:

1.0 ip, 2 h, 2 er, 3 bb, BS

1.0 ip, 1 h, 0 er, 0 bb, S

1.0 ip, 3 h, 2 er, 0 bb, S

1.0 ip, 1 h, 1 er, 1 bb, BS, W

TOT: 4.0 ip, 7 h, 5 er, 4 bb, 11 baserunners, 2 blown saves

So yes, to your last sentence, he *does* need to get it together. But he definitely has the ability to do just that.

He hasn't had a full season in quite some time. His durability is a serious concern.

Does this take him off "Rivera highway"?

It just means he got run over by a big rig trying to hitchhike down it.

Hey Israel, I think these 2 geniuses are trying to mock you. Good sports discussion.

Hadn't noticed but glad to see that I have some fans even though they do not agree with me

I'm not a professional psychologist, but I would say that their interest in you is a bit obsessive and borderline unhealthy.;)

I have to say you're right, some of his numbers and the recent blown saves are taking some of the lustre off the Paps reunion campaign.

Some may disagree with me and that's fine, but i just don't think closers are worthwhile investments in general.

There is no campaign. I have been convinced that Papelbon should never set foot in Fenway unless he is wearing an opponent's uniform or he buys a ticket.

I agree 100%. I think teams tend to overspend on closers (look at Papelbon or Soriano's contracts or the Bailey or Melancon trade) because they think there's something magical about pitching the 9th inning as opposed to the 8th inning. Almost every time someone has taken a very good set up man and tried them out as the closer, they have become a successful closer. Grilli, Mujica, Balfour, Frieri, Perkins, Janssen and Holland are all great examples of closer who are doing well this year were set up men relatively recently. Rivera and Papelbon weren't closers when they first started pitching out of the bulllpen either.

Is it fine, because it doesn't seem like you are fine with people disagreeing with you. I may be wrong about that, but that is the vibe I am picking up.;)

You're usually wrong about everything. Kinda like Jacko, but in Red Sox fan version

Jacko (even he is a yankee fan) and Ted are two of the most baseball knowledge posters, look at the awards, I'm not the only one who thinks that way. Ted is often awarded in many categories.
