I think its the right move. Bailey is more likely to have success than Hanrahan in the long-run anyway. Hanrahan is too much of a fastball pitcher. He had success in the NL where just throwing straight 98 MPH gas works. That's the type of approach that gets knocked around in the AL.

Its one of the reasons the Red Sox got him on the cheap anyway.

Its a shame for him that he got demoted but, like I previously said, I don't think he is a fit for an American League club.

As long as we have many effective relievers on our team I don't care which one is the closer. I can't wait until Morales and Breslow are back too because that potentially can give us a lethal bullpen.

Well nobody throws "straight" at any velo in the ML and gets away with it. But I have often commented here that for whatever reason it takes Hanrahan about 3-6 FB's before it starts to move around for him. 3 FB could be OK but 6 flat, straight FB's could leave you with two on and nobody out right quick.

Red Sox to stick with Bailey as closer

Posted by Robert Burgess April 30, 2013 04:11 PM

The Red Sox will stick with Andrew Bailey as closer for now, despite the return of former closer Joel Hanrahan from the disabled list.

According to Globe sports writer Pete Abraham, manager John Farrell spoke to both relief pitchers about the decision.

"The one thing Joel is, he's honest with himself, and he understands what's going on here," Farrell told MLB Network Radio earlier today. "When he's healthy, he's going to make us a better team."

Hanrahan struggled - going 0-1 with three saves and an 11.57 ERA - before a stint on the disabled list with a hamstring injury, while Bailey has thrived in the role earning five saves.

Globe national baseball writer Nick Cafardo said via Twitter that the team wants to ease Hanrahan back without disrupting what seems to be working for the time being.

But with Bailey's injury history (he appeared in just 19 games for the Red Sox in 2012), Hanrahan may have another chance to close games later this season.

Hanrahan made rehab appearances for Pawtucket on April 26 and 28 and allowed two runs in his two innings of work. He is available to pitch tonight.

The Red Sox optioned Daniel Bard to Portland to make roster space for Hanrahan.

This is an excellent decision, and the first time in a while I have read through an on-field personnel decision made by the Sox and not had a single bad part to point out.

Red Sox will get Bailey examined on Monday

Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff May 5, 2013 12:18 AM

ARLINGTON, Texas — Red Sox manager John Farrell said before batting practice on Saturday that Andrew Bailey would be available for the game. That changed an hour later after Bailey did some throwing.

The righthander felt continued discomfort in his bicep and was not cleared to pitch. A team doctor will examine Bailey on Monday in Boston. He has not pitched since last Sunday.

Bailey was concerned that after feeling good on Friday, there was more discomfort.

“I went out, and played catch normally and I guess it's not ready yet," Bailey said after a 5-1 loss against the Rangers. "I'm very frustrated, got a lot of different notions. Just have to wake up tomorrow and see how it goes.

“Yesterday it was good, and we wanted to give it another day to make sure and today, it just wasn't ready."

Farrell and GM Ben Cherington do not believe that Bailey re-injured his arm.

“It wasn’t maybe as improved as we had hoped,” Farrell said. “We determined he wasn’t going to be available just to give it another day of rest.”

Bailey caught a break with Hanrahan's hamstring problem. He won back the closers job, and now his never ending injury bug causes him to lose the job again. It doesn't matter to me which of the two closes. Either one is light years better than Aceves.

I used to joke in these pages about how Bailey was bound to trip over a bat in the dugout precipitating his next injury. But I am just amazed at the guy's inability to stay on the field. What has he pitched here? What...about 10 maybe 15 innings or something like that.

At some point you just stop trying to understand why and just resign yourself to it. Don't think we will ever get more than a few weeks at a time out of him before the next whatever happens to him.

Bailey has to be one of the biggest tin men in the game. Whatever rhyme or reason the guy just can't stay in one piece. It is always something or something else. Now we have to endure garbage like Mortensen and Wilson when we could have used Bailey---like maybe today. Then again, we hit crappy, pitched crappy and played crappy so maybe Bales wouldn't have been much help at that.

Bailey just might be a candy-ass tin man who just can't stay in one piece.

Well lets see. He has been a major leaguer for 5 years and injured the last 4 of them. I think that is right.

Alright already Jung---do you want to make feel crappier than I already am? I'm convinced........Bailey is a physical wreck!!!!!!! What I need to know is what do we do now? I'm not convinced that Hanrahan is the answer either, and you already know what I think of Miller, Wilson and Mortensen.....s***, sounds like a shyster law firm, doesn't it?

Breslow is getting ready and hopefully Morales isnt too far either. but i feel Morales has more potential compared to Doubront as a starter. Doubbie on the other hand can go max 3 innings, he is the Aceves type guy. he should be used out of the bullpen.

They could easily improve their pitching bringing Webster up to start, and putting Doubront or Lackey in the BP--in long relief. That would take the pressure off the Japanese guys.

Mortenson should be cut--they keep him because he's out of options. It's called beancounting. Breslow will help--finally. Morales is still invisible. Bailey and Hanrahan can't seem to stay healthy--simultaneously. One or the other is always hurt.

The other thing is the lineup: they started the season on the road with a speed-defense lineup which was successful. But now they seem to have reverted to the old one-dimensional power lineup which doesn't hit on the road. That puts pressure on the pitching.

If you guys remember the discussions about Felix, he can't go to the pen cause he cannot warm up on the spot like a relief pitcher. He must "prepare" for his appearances. So appears to be start or nothing for Felix.

Bailey heads to DL; Breslow activated

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff May 6, 2013 03:32 PM

The Red Sox today placed closer Andrew Bailey on the 15-day disabled list and lefty Craig Breslow has been activated.

Bailey has experienced some soreness in his right biceps and had an MRI today. we'll have more news on MRI results later. Breslow had been rehabbing in Pawtucket.

We have 2 closers and neither one can keep the job due to injuries. I guess Uehara gets to cloe until they make it back. Forearm tightness is never a good thing for pitchers.

Some say that 14 SV, 4 BS with a 78 %SV after 3 yrs makes him a successful closer. Furthermore, I'm not sure if these numbers can label you as closer.

Anyways, He is our only option at this point, now that the other two busts are on DL. He has showed good things, but still he would be another experiment as closer. Hopefully he becomes the closer we have been looking for.
