Francisco Liriano has looked good in 3 starts for the Pirates.

5 1/3 1 ER 9 K's at the Mets.

5 2/3 1 ER 7 K's vs. Milwaukee.

7 0 ER 9 K's vs. the Cubs.

18 innings, 2 ER, 25 K's, 1.11 WHIP

Not bad for someone who's ERA for the past 2 full seasons (and 3 of the last 4) has been over 5.

They're in a good position right now - they really can't nosedive in September for a second straight year, right?

Not with that pitching, it isn't. They're just like the Angels. They'll win a lot of slugfests, but they'll lose a lot of them too. They'll also lose the close games.

Jim Johnson blew another one today, going 2/3 of an inning allowed 4 runs to lose to Toronto. As much as I wanted Toronto to win, that just cost me money. f*** the Toronto offense and Baltimore pitching.

Top trade targets (listed on MLBTR via Joel Sherman and Buster Olney) appear Justin Morneau, Alex Rios, Andre Ethier, Jose Bautista, Cliff Lee and Matt Garza.

It all depends on what teams consider themselves sellers. I think our team can always use another piece or two and we have a good farm system as well as money to be able to pull off moves. In addition I think our high draft slot should be able to help replenish much of what we give up if the right moves comes along.

Sox might need a corner OF. Ethier or Rios would be a good match.

I'm not sure if we need a starter but I think we can always use one. (What teams can't use another good starter?)

I'm intrigued by Rios/Ethier as well but I wonder what that would do to Nava/Gomes/Carp.

Rios is making $12.5M this year and next year with an option in 2015 for $13.5M ($1M buyout)

Ethier is making $13.5M this year, $15.5M in 2014, $18M in 2015, $16M in 2016, $18M in 2017, and $17.5M (club option) for 2018 with a $2.5M buyout. Ethier is 29 this season and Alex Rios is 32 this season I believe.

Ethier is a glorified platoon player. He couldn't hit a lefty if the mafia kidnapped his wife and told him the only way to save her was getting a hit off of one. He'd wake up a widow the next day.

I doubt the White Sox trade Rios, but it's more likely than the Blue Jays trading Bautista IMO.

Which brought his ERA down to like 5.57 I believe.

(I used to really like Marcum which was why he was one of my early picks in our redraft. I remember you commenting on that pick as well)

Not sure where to put this (as it's def not worthy of it's own thread)

but I had no idea that Mark Hendrickson, the lefty starter/reliever for the Orioles was drafted in the same NBA draft as Kobe Bryant. He was the 2nd pick of the 2nd round to the Philadelphia 76ers and played 76ers, Kings, Cavaliers, and Nets as well as the Orioles, Blue Jays, Rays, Dodgers and Marlins.
