I hadnt heard anything bout lighting hitting Ells and Peedy's plane. Everything alright?

A striking return to the Fort for two Sox

Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff February 10, 2013 05:29 PM

FORT MYERS, Fla. — A plane carrying Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia was struck by lightning on its way to Fort Myers.

Here's what Ellsbury posted on Twitter:

Our plane just got struck by lightning heading to Ft. Myers. #itsgoodluck

That's good luck? Yikes. Pedroia probably wanted to get out and walk the rest of the way. He's not much for flying.

Meanwhile Jason Varitek was the latest Red Sox luminary to arrive in camp.

Early words on Ortiz are encouraging. He arrived in camp today and says he feels 90%. Peter Abraham says Ortiz seems to be moving around well.

Clay Buchholz tweaked his hammy covering first base and left with trainers. AND SO IT BEGINS!!!!

It is a mild strain in his right hamstring. He is only listed day-to-day.

Did he lose that stupid horseface along with all the weight?

haha, it is still there. Although, I must admit he did look a little skinnier in the face. Probably a better way to answer your question is by saying that he has a thinner horseface.

Buchholz said hamstring injury is so mild training staff didn't classify it as a strain or pulled muscle. Nothing like hammy injury in '10

Whew. Good news.

They are going to go through stuff like this when they have just started to crank it up. I don't think it indicative of anything at this point.

I am far more concerned about where Ortiz is at this point with his Achilles. It certainly sounds like it is still tender...something he still can "feel". That may not be atypical at his age for that kind of injury. However, nothing about that is particularly comforting...Can't ignore his age, the injury nor his progress till now given the importance of Ortiz to this lineup.

It's usually not something to worry about unless they keep pushing the strained muscle.

Jacko, what was the timeline with Pineda? Was it soreness he tried to work through and made it worse, or did they shut him down at the first sign of stiffness only to find a major injury after the examination?

I learned the hard way with working through stiffness. I messed my shoulder up first season here and pushed through and ended up making it worse and paid for it for a couple seasons.

Now that I'm a coach as well I monitor every ache and pain of my players more closely and anyone with pain or abnormal soreness gets shut down immediately and worked back in slowly. On our small scale, this method has helped a lot with arm injuries.

I think I saw someplace that they postponed continued work for Buch at this point. I think makes sense. This early.... why push him into something.

Whew. Good news.

And so it begins, overreactions to every minor event because this team is destined to be in last damn place or something something...

There will be injuries. It just a matter of when. The last time the Red Sox had 5 starters take 30 all of their turns was 2004. Every year since has seen substantial time lost ot injury. Not to worry, we have plenty of depth.

I'm actually looking forward to this season. Napoli, Hanrahan, Drew, and Farrell bring a lot of promise, but the ALEast is gonna be a five team race this year.

I'm looking foward to this season too. However, every time I do, it doesn't go as expected. They make it seem like they're gonna turn it around and they're gonna kick ass then just free fall. The quote from fever pitch will always remain relevant to the Sox. "Careful kid they'll break your heart". I blame my excited on Forsyth, he keeps finding the good in every player with Red Sox across the chest. I'm not expecting a WS team, I just want to see some major improvement. Going to the playoffs this year to me means success.

Spring Training always brings out a bunch of media stuff regarding the Sox but this one surprised me.

One of the radio talking heads claimed today that there was a contingent of Sox fans that disliked Pedey. I had hard time with that one. I could see fans of other teams disliking Pedey but the comment was specific to a contingent of Sox fans.

I did not like the way Pedey handled the Youk thing but ....so what. That was over for me way before Pedey came out and basically acknowledged that he had not handled that situation as he should have. I can't see a Sox fan disliking Pedey over that thing.

Anyway I am not going to ask if the argument sounds plausible. Does anybody know a Sox fan, even a casual Sox fan that dislikes Pedey? I don't know one but that is just the folks that I know.

Update:

I had not been listening to the radio since I had heard the discussion about Sox fans that dislike Pedey. Going back and picking the discussion where I left it, sure enough, the claim is that it is over the way Pedey handled the Youk thing. I just cannot believe that.

So maybe there is something about that whole Youk deal that I am not getting. Anybody here still maybe even just miffed at Pedey over that?

Oh, I don't know Jung. Buchholz has this bad habit of fu@@ing himself up on routine baseball plays. I was sitting in SF's AT@T Park back in 2010 and saw Clay try and slide into second base and wound up coming out of the game because he couldn't slide properly and was built like tin. He was out t hree weeks back then. Who the hell is the trainer and why aren't these guys ready to take part in drills when they begin? So it begins....again!!!!!

The only thing that I look at from afar and wonder about is Buch's weight.

He put on the weight because he really felt like he needed it, hoping he would add to his durability. If you recall the extra weight itself turned out to be a problem. So, I have thought since then....where does that really leave him. He needed the weight or at least thought he did. However the weight brought along some other issues that prevented him from pitching and staying healthy. So he took the weight back off again. So....OK....where does that really leave him.

I know that without the added weight, Buch almost looks sickly at least to me.

A hammy pull in mid February will not knock him out into the season, although it might leave him a little behind in his ST regimen. Instead of being able to throw 100 pitches in start 1, he might be at 80. Not that big of a deal
