Don't see why the extra pieces would be anything major. How do the names of Sands/Pimentel leak and not something bigger if they were also part of the deal?

I'm just trying to figure out what the Sox would give up 4 players for. If Salty goes the other way, I can def see Jones coming back, and we could use a platoon LHH who can play some outfield and is not Daniel Nava.

Yikes, those are cringeworthy. We're talking about one year of a reliever with a 3.74 career ERA, with big walk numbers who will make 7 million in 2013.

We're probably looking at guys like Britton/Stolmy in any reasonable deal.

This. Sands/Stolmy is just as good. Looks like a good trade, from what I've heard so far. Hope the other pieces are nonfactors.

Clint Robinson? LHD hitting 1st baseman. Big power numbers AAA Omaha (KC). They have several 1st baseman on roster. Sands would be another.

Yes, the Garrett Jones part would make a lot of sense. By trading Sands we would need to acquire a 1B/OF type. Jones would fill that role perfectly.

They wanted Iggy, but Sox said no. They have several 1st basemen--could also be Clint

Robinson--big power numbers AAA Omaha (KC).

If Jones is the ther piece, then it's hard move to hate, even for the worst of the pessimists.

Pimtel and Sands for Hanrahan is not bad. I wanted to see what Sands could do, but he was movable. Depending on what the other pieces are it could be a really good move.

Garrett Jones hit .289/.332/.556 vs RHP last year.

In his career, he's a .279/.348/.504 hitter vs RHP.

He'd be a fantastic addition, exactly what the Sox are looking for, a versatile LH hitting 1B.

Why would Salty be involved? The Pirates just signed Russell Martin

Salty was a WAG on my part based on what we had to give that the Pirates might be interested in.

At the time I had no idea that Martin was signed by Pittsburgh and thought a second catcher with 1B experience and a 20 HR bat would be a pretty fair fit.

A 1B/corner OF who's pretty good in right field. He could platoon with Gomes and back up 1B too.

Looking at the Pirates roster for players who could be imvolved in a trade like this, and the Sox would want, Garrett Jones is easily the single most obvious fit for a second player.

I doubt Salty is involved. I also highly doubt the Pirates will move Garrett Jones. He is still cheap and won't be a FA until 2016.

Gotta like the moves Pirates are making. Smart time for them to trade Hanrahan while they are about to loose control of him and his value is high.

Honestly, I am not a Pirate fan, but I root for teams who have struggled. Pittsburgh, Kansas City, and Cincinnati were great franchises in the 1970s and 1980s. I believe it is good for baseball to see them make positive moves to return to contention.

Btw, Walt Jocketty in Cincy has done a great job with that franchise since being fired by the Cardinals.

I don't love the trade because I kind of like Pimentel and Sands, but the Sox are assembling a pretty good bullpen: Aceves, Breslow, Miller, Tazawa, Bailey, Hanrahan

That's six good arms out there. And, as Baltimore showed last year, a really good bullpen can win you a lot of games.

9:11pm: In an update of his earlier story, Edes reports that Mark Melancon could also be going to the Pirates in the trade. The 27-year-old right-hander pitched to a 6.20 ERA with 8.2 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9 in 45 relief innings with the Red Sox after being acquired from the Astros last winter. He also spent some time in Triple-A.
So, the trade is essentially a couple of minor leaguers, Jed Lowrie and a player to be named for Hanrahan and a player to be named.

The Orioles used 100 mirrors and smoke from 100 fires to win all those games last year.

I'm not thrilled with Melancon going in the trade. He seems like a good player to stash in the minors and hope he'll start dominating eventually. Especially since we gave up the best player in major league history to get him, Jed Lowrie.

Don't forget that we signed Uehara too. I wouldn't be surprised if this trade was also done to help clear up some spots on the 40 man roster.

Uehara qualifies as a good bullpen arm too.

I like the idea of Jones coming back but don't think it's happening. His name would have been leaked with the other names or at least a "Jones is is being discussed as part of a possible deal". I think it's more likely some prospects are coming back. That Robinson guy I saw mentioned earlier made some sense.

Reports I've read is a 2 for 4 trade. Not all of the names are coming out. The Sox get Hanrahan for Pimentel and Sands. Melancon name is being mentioned, but haven't seen where his name and the other players are mentioned. I think is an upgrade to the pen.
