Interesting about the varied takes on Swisher as a clubhouse guy. Some folks think he has been a good clubhouse guy. I guess others think less of him.

I could easily see how he would rub guys the wrong way.

He's like the anti-Jeter in the clubhouse.

Just some minor trades,

I believe that these "minor trades" can turn into "major trades" due to the fact that the sox have just given up 3 roster spots to make room for other players in free agency or through trades. This could possibly mean acquiring the likes of Choo, Masterson or a combination of Gordon, Hosmer, Moustakas or go after free agents like Victorino or LaRoche or maybe just maybe (drum roll) Josh Hamilton

Wow Madson for 3.5...how the mighty have fallen.

That is just the sort of deal I was talking about in the other thread though so that does sort of torque me off. I guess I could salve my wounds on the fact that the Sox one decent area is bullpen. Would still would have preferred to kick one of a number of dead weight dolts off the squad for Madson though.

But Madson could be a cheap take a gamble guy that could be better than some of the guys occupying uniforms now and 3.5m does not seem to be much money to risk on such a gambit. I little pricier than I would have liked but some deals like that where it could work out but could bust are likely in the works for this team I would think.

Where they have really screwed up I think is in paying $6M and more!!!! for these post op guys and those deals I completely agree should be avoided. Then you are tossing some real money out on the table. If Madson could have been had for $2.5 instead of $3.5, I really would have been disappointed.

Are you for real? The last thing the Red Sox need is more post-op pitchers.

Right. Madson is coming off TJ surgery and likely won't be ready for the start of the season. I am not at all upset about missing out on the guy.

I believe Madson wanted to go where he could close. He wanted that guarantee and wouldn't get that in Boston nor Cincinnati.

Well if he wanted guarantees that might be hard to give. But Madson's surgery was in April as I remember. So it would seem he would get a good bit of 2013 in. I am sure the Angels think he will be pitching in 2013.

But do you want the Red Sox gambling 3.5 million on a post-op relief pitcher with all of the needs they have?

They spent 6 million on their 3rd catcher, and 10 million on a platoon outfielder who might just be better suited for DH. I wouldn't lose sleep over Madson's contract. Remember when you thought 12 million for Jenks was a good idea?

I wouldn't if he wasn't just coming off of TJ surgery. It's not a lot of money, but it's a waste of money.

Is it just me or they simply do not know how to spend.... Geez the list is looooong and full of busts overpaid.

Details of Madson's deal

6 hours ago by KenRosenthal

With some free-agent contracts, the fine print can be revealing.

Right-hander Ryan Madson agreed to a one-year, $3.5 million deal Wednesday with the Los Angeles Angels. But Madson can earn as much as $7 million if he remains healthy and emerges as the Angels’ closer.

His contract includes five roster bonuses that could add up to $2.5 million and four bonuses for games finished that could add up to $1 million, according to a source with knowledge of the contract.

Madson, 32, had Tommy John surgery last April, but his agent, Scott Boras, believes he can ready by Opening Day and the Angels share that optimism, sources say.

Madson will receive his roster bonuses as long as he does not suffer an injury related to his right arm; if he went on the disabled list with say, a hamstring or groin injury, the days would not count against him.

The way the contract reads, Madson would receive $500,000 at each of the following thresholds — 45 days, 90 days, 135 days and 180 days (a full season) — as long as he is not on the DL with an injury to his arm.

He also would receive $250,000 at each point if he finishes 35, 40, 45 and 50 games — thresholds that he could reasonably attain if he established himself as the team’s closer.

Right-hander Ernesto Frieri and lefty Scott Downs are among the Angels’ other options for the ninth inning.

— Ken Rosenthal>

This looks like a very reasonable deal.

No $3.5m is just a little to rich for my blood. But as I said earlier I would have been a little disappointed if he went for $2.5m. The Red Sox cough and $2.5m comes out. At $2.5m IF he would have agreed to a contract that did not guarantee that he close, I would have been disappointed if they did not take such a flier.

Although that part does sound kinda' weird...how can the Angels guarantee him he will close when he may not pitch early in the year? I can see them guaranteeing that he gets a shot to close but guaranteeing that he will be the closer seems impractical....No????

They're already shopping their former closer, Jordan Walden, according to MLBTR, meaning they are actually guaranteeing the closer's spot to Madson. This seems like a recipe for failure on the Angels' part to me.

I prefer Madson over Bailey closing, any day.
We spent $3.9 million on Bailey last year and got nothing for it. The incentives here are valuable. If he turn out to be a big time stopper this year, he'll be worth $7 million.

And Madson would probably be yet another one if he suffers just one setback coming back from TJ.

What is more expensive for a closer-- 3.5 million, or 4 million and a cost controlled 30 HR, gold glove winning right fielder? Madson is only making 3 million above league minimum, that's definitely worth a risk for the Angels.

So I was a little confused about what MVP was quoting.....

and then I realized that even though I blocked a700, he logged out, copied.....and pasted what I wrote regarding blocking him in a new post.

Internet stalking, pretty sad and pathetic.

Whoops....700 was posting up details as I was posting. I still would have wanted the guaranteed money a little lower if this were a Sox deal and I probably would have been a little stingier on the incentives. But I can see how the Angels can talk themselves into this.

Unfortunately for the Angels they are in that worst of all positions.....thinking they are just one or two chancy deals away from a World Series. That said when we have been in those situations, out come the multimillion $ canons....usually aimed at our own knee caps!

Tickets go on sale in 2 days. Unless we see some moves in the next day or 2, the advanced sales will be very slow. Maybe they are waiting to gauge the degree of interest/disinterest in the team before they make any moves. I think they will be shocked at the lack of interest.

What does that have to do with anything? The Bailey-for-Reddick trade has no bearing on the Madson signing. It's an apples to spaceships comparison.

The point is that he just had TJS, and while he may be a worthwhile risk for the Angels, why would it be for the Red Sox and their roster full of holes?

... And even if Madson had failed for us, those 3.5 would have been symbolic given our long list of overpaid busts in the last 4 yrs.

Who is this knucklehead accusing of stalking him? What did I supposedly do?
