I had a bad feeling about Kalish when the Sox were clearly not doing more than setting him up to platoon someplace. He seems like a nice enough guy. But I am sorta' done with him. Whatever they get out of him should be treated as gravy at this point.

True. I guess i was just hoping for the best out of Kalish this year. With Kalish missing ST and if it goes on into the season who will platoon with Gomes?

Nava... or PTBNL

With Kalish injured again the FO has to be looking at some depth somewhere. Garrett Jones makes the most sense. We need someone with Left handed power than can platooon with Gomes and Napoli at 1B. Come on Ben do something!

I was kinda getting on the Kalish bandwagon and hoping the kid done good this year platooning with Gomes but he cant stay healthy at all at soome point you have to move on. I just wonder how serious this aliment is?

What the hell is wrong with players in the Red Sox organization!!!!!!!!!! We seem to have a bunch of fragile candy ass players who can't seem to stay in one piece, and then take eons to get back in shape and in the lineup. We know our medical staff has come in for some legitimate criticism the past few years and some of their people seemed to be totally inept, but a lot of this is on the players too. I also was on the Kalish bandwagon but this is getting to be a farce. The guy is made of crepe paper and if he sneezes he needs to go under the knife. This is the point we have to move on. Whatever the hell it is this time the fact is Ryan simply cannot stay healthy. He must just have one s***** body makeup. Sorry to hear about the guy because he deserves better but we could have used him and now we need another outfielder and there aren't any available-----and, please, don't anyone start to try and sell me on Nava. He's a nice kid and a nice story but every year he gets hot and then turns Arctic when things get real tough.

It is disappointing to learn that Kalish is on the shelf again. I don't know how he got injured without playing in the off season. Is it possible that he got injured playing Frisbee with SFF?

He was probably trying to impress me and threw out his arm. So much so that it even threw out his non throwing arm!!

I wonder why the nature of his injury has not been disclosed.

Garret Jones plz.

It is time to add someone like Kolbrin Vitek to Iglesias to persuade the Pirates to save some bucks. I believe one of their top prospects is a left handed hitting first baseman, but he is probably a year away.

The upper spinal surgery that Kalish had was not just a simple routine surgery for an athlete. I don't know if Peyton Manning and Kalish had the same procedure, but look at the problems Manning had getting back on the field. The news reports are that this surgery isn't related to the prior neck surgery, but they are not disclosing the nature of the procedure. As with many Red Sox things, this is a matter of some secrecy.:dunno:

If we finish last again, I hope that you are man enough to take accountability.;)

From the reports ive read regarding Kalish is he will undergo surgery on his non-throwing shoulder to repair his labrum im speculating from the reports ive seen on him but no timeline on when he should be back.

Sweeney is signed to a minors deal and promises no punching of doors. Sweeney is alright defensively so that just goes along with Boston's new idea of good defense and clubhouse guys. Have to say the move isnt a splash but doesnt surprise me them bringing him back.

what a choice! It's a little scary to think that Nava might have a bigger impact than this group, especially if kalish doesn't get over his injury troubles.

To be fair, though, Nava's defense was very good last year in LF, and he posted a .383 OBP vs RHP.

If he's going to be facing RHP exclusively (albeit splitting time vs RHP, as I think Gomes gets most of the ABs), he's a pretty good option to have out there.

Not to mention he's one of the few guys left who would go play a double header then come back and wash everyones jerseys if it meant he got to stay with the big club. He appreciates his time and works hard to stay up there. His talent against RHP (.797 OPS vs RHP in 2012) is certainly good enough to merit keeping him as an option vs RHP.

Especially when you consider Gomes (Career .732 OPS vs RHP, .715 in 2012) and Victorino (Career .732 OPS vs RHP, like Gomes, and .629 OPS vs RHP in 2012). They don't exactly murder RHP. Having a guy who can get on base at a near .385-.400 clip vs RHP while playing above average defense in LF would certainly be worth keeping around, specifically for this team.

All that said, I really want Garrett Jones, but I'm not sure what they're asking for. If we can pull Jones for a package revolving around Iglesias plus 1 lower level, young kid, I'd do it in a heartbeat (assuming it wasn't a highly touted, top prospect going with Iggy).

Nava on the opening day roster would be one of the signs of the apocalypse for the 2013 season.

And the second sign is - Ryan Sweeney.

Right. We're talking about a bat off the bench here. Someone who can work the count against righthanders and get his butt on base. No one is demanding that anyone be Manny Ramirez. Well at least no one sane is.

As the roster is constrcuted right now, Nava is your best option to crack the roster and share left field with Gomes.

BTW your answer to the poll above is Che-Hsuan Lin. Not because Lin is so great, but because the others are for one reason or another, not likely to stick on a big league roster at all, while Lin has a snowball's chance in hell of endearing himself to the right team at some point because he plays elite defense.

Sorry bud, I totally baited you there.

It's the truth. If the rumors are true that Kalish is going under the knife he's pretty much done, and the others are nonoptions at this point.

Sorry to go a bit OT here, but just read this story in the NYTimes this morning which is relevant to all sports fans, including those that watch NESN, the Red Sox network.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/26/business/media/all-viewers-pay-to-keep-tv-sports-fans-happy.html?ref=todayspaper&_r=0

The article is about the high cost of sports TV channels, and how these channels are bundled with other channels in packages, so viewers who don't watch sports have to pay for them as well. This is probably the key to the huge revenues coming out of sports TV which makes most players into millionaires.

For example, ESPN takes 5 bucks out of your cable bill, whether you watch it or not. Fox LA is going up to $7 because of their big contract with the Dodgers.

Personally, I'm more than willing to pay for the sports channels, since I watch them. But I wonder about all those viewers who don't watch sports. At some point, from the gist of the article, the government could step in and eliminate "bundling" which include sports packages. That would drop sports TV revenues, and those million dollar salaries would take a hit. Something that sooner or later may happen.

On the subject of Kalish, the delay in his season is just an opportunity for Nava to show his 2nd half problems last year were due to a bad wrist. Bautista also had a bad wrist last year that killed his hitting.

Kalish may never get back to where he was a couple of years ago before his injury, but they have other kids coming up soon, Bradley and Brentz, and this may create opportunities for them as well.

Why are you even mentioning Bautista when talking about Nava? Also, Bautista had a near .900 OPS and hit 27 bombs in 92 games. Not even in the same universe.
Posted

Why are you being so touchy? In the context of what Soxsport was saying, the fact that Bautista is usually so good only enhances his point.

Be irritated all you want to, but don't let your irritation blind you to the facts.

Posted

I'm not irritated. I'm speaking the truth. You're the one who's irritated because you have that raging hard-on for a 4th OF.

Notice how i have not spoken up against Nava as a backup mind you, because that's exactly what he is. All of the excuses in the universe aren't going to change that fact. He's a good guy to have around, but come on.

Those bastards, Comcast has went up $5 for most digital starter and high tier pack starting this January. They did the same the previous year. $10 increase over 2 year is outrageous. I don't even watch 90% of the TV channels on my service plan. So essentially I'm paying $90 for a few channels I do watch regularly.

Craig Breslow's deal with Red Sox worth $6.25 million

January 26, 2013

BOSTON* — Craig Breslow's two-year contract with the Boston Red Sox calls for the left-hander to receive at least $6.25 million.

The 32-year-old will get salaries of $2,325,000 this year and $3,825,000 in 2014 under Thursday's agreement. The Red Sox have a $4 million option for 2015 with a $100,000 buyout.

Breslow made $1,795,000 last year, when he was 3-0 with a 2.70 ERA in 63 games for Arizona and Boston, which acquired him July 31.

He had asked for $2,375,000 in salary arbitration and had been offered $2,325,000, the smallest gap among the 41 players who swapped figures with their clubs Jan. 18.

What do people here think of this contract?
