The DBacks have DFA'd Lars Anderson.

The Red Sox would be smart to pick him up as an extra option at their LHH 1B/OF.

Diamondbacks Designate Anderson For Assignment

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [January 24, 2013 at 1:25pm CST]

The Diamondbacks announced that they have designated first baseman Lars Anderson for assignment. Arizona's 40-man roster remains full.

Arizona originally acquired Anderson from Cleveland in a three-team trade last month. The 25-year-old appeared in six games for the Red Sox last year, but Boston traded him to the Guardians for Steven Wright at the non-waiver trade deadline last July. Anderson, a left-handed hitter, spent most of the 2012 season at Triple-A, where he posted a .250/.353/.396 batting line in 470 plate appearances.

The Red Sox are being very protective of some of their mediocre members of their 40 man roster right now. Not sure why Dan Butler would get a chance over Lars Anderson, but who knows.

Isn't Lars just another one of Theo's busted prospects?

I just mentioned this in another thread.

Anderson was the best hitter in Ft Myers for the Sox last spring, but they stashed him in AAA because of AdGon and then let him go. The DBacks I guess got him from Cleveland, but they have Goldschmidt and another power AAA guy at 1B, so they don't need him. They are creating roster space with the Upton trade.

A lefty hitter with power. Good pickup for the Sox. Good defensively, I believe. A lot better than Smoak, who has never shown power at any level (except that freak month last Sept). Anderson has been in the minors a long time, and has never shown consistency in BA. Sometimes, these guys break out late if given a chance.

"Lazy Lars", as we called hi on another board, was a total and complete underachiever, a lot of promise and nothing of substance achieved. He was a very cerebral player when he was in the Red Sox organization and said baseball was only one of his numerous areas of interest. I gave him a red flag right then and he lived up to my low opinion of him. Anthony Rizzo buzzed by him on the prospect list after the Red Sox stupidly put "Lazy Lars" at the top of theirs. He was sent to the Guardians and they apparently didn't care for him and now Arizona doesn't even wait until ST to show him the door.

Everyone here knows how little use I have for Mauro Gomes, right? Well I would rather have Gomez than Anderson. The guy is a big good looking young man, the sexy type that Lucchino talks about, but he is a total empty uniform. No thanks!!!!!!!

What does everyone feel about Carl Pavano? He might be up for minor league contract.

I don't know. He is such an injury risk. He is now down for 6 to 8 weeks with a ruptured spleen. If the Twins are not interested, the Sox should not be.

Reiterating an important word here-- minor league.

We don't have room on the 40 for a signing of Pvano to be relevant.

Who do you cut for an old, broken down has-been who practically never was.

There's some I might cut for an actually useful veteran. For Pavano, I don't see a guy I clear.

The Red Sox have six catchers on the roster, and six outfielders on the roster. Does that make sense to you?

With Marcum and Jurjens gone, it is pretty clear that Cherries was being forthright and honest when he said that he thought the pitching was muh improved over last year's staff. I think he is mistaken. It is only marginally better.

If that. The bullpen probably looks better on paper, but they need a really big year out of Dempster and to hope Lackey comes back. Toss in the fact that Lester needs to perform as the guy we've been waiting for the last two years and Buch needs to stay healthy, and it's a whole lot of hoping it works out. It'd really suck if pitching killed this team three years in a row.

Nevermind:

Jurrgens to the Orioles for 1.5 plus 2.5 worth of incentives for 1 year

Marcum to the Mets dont know the details of the deal

You keep saying that, yet Smoak has a higher MiLB homer total (for a season) and has actually hit for some power at the MLB level, unlike Anderson in limited chances. Check the stats before making these types of comments,.

Best hitter in ST? Wrong again. He was 4th in OPS behind Cody Ross, Pedro Ciriaco and Darnell MacDonald.

He went to AAA and didn't perform. How is that on the Sox.

The ruptured spleen occurred when he fell down while shovelling snow.

Heard Kalish is going under the knife again. It's probably over for him.

Hurt himself playing ultimate frisbee, I guess...

Per Rob Bradford:

According to a major league source, Red Sox outfielder Ryan Kalish is likely to undergo surgery for an unspecified ailment, forcing the outfielder to miss spring training. The injury is not to Kalish’s neck, which was one of the issues he dealt with throughout the 2012 season.

Kalish underwent two separate surgeries last offseason, both both a bulging disk in his neck and a torn labrum in his shoulder. He didn’t begin participate in minor league games until May 26, ultimately appearing in 36 games with the Red Sox.

The possibility of surgery was first reported by Matthew Stucko of Minor League Baseball’s official Web site (via Twitter).

I was kinda getting on the Kalish bandwagon and hoping the kid done good this year platooning with Gomes but he cant stay healthy at all at soome point you have to move on. I just wonder how serious this aliment is?

I'll still hope for the best for him, but he has a long way to go before anyone can consider him a legitimate factor for this team.

True. I guess i was just hoping for the best out of Kalish this year. With Kalish missing ST and if it goes on into the season who will platoon with Gomes?
