First of all' date=' are you talking about [i']Dustin[/i] Pedroia when you type "JP"? If so, well, I don't know what to say.

Either way, players like Dustin Pedroia and Keven Youkilis are the reason I watch baseball. Their intensity and drive make up for the likes of Manny Ramirez who go through the motions whenever the don't feel the need to do else.

I'm not sure what you mean by "TF boy", but as far as his ability to motivate troops, those kinds of things are meant to be the icing on the cake of a great player, which Pedroia is. I'd have loved it if Pedroia could have single-handedly gotten the team fixed in a hurry, but it's not something that I require, and it has nothing with backing up a teammate now.

As far as what we were getting with Valentine... I never expected him to be a soft spoken quiet man, but I hoped that when he did get loud and nasty, it wouldn't be directed at one of his players in the middle of April! I suppose I was deluded.

Fans cheer the players. Managers should be kicking them in the ass. It works.

It's too bad for him. I'm tired of this notion that the delicate princesses who get paid $10 million can' t be made uncomfortable.

That is NOT what I'm saying. Delicate Princesses can and should be made uncomfortable if they deserve it. Such a short sample doesn't accurately reflect Youkilis the player. If this happen in June, or even May, maybe it seems less like a helpless jackass move by BV. I still don't think it should have been done in the press no matter when it was done, though.

I agree with you 100% in that point. I just don't think the method was appropriate given the circumstances.

I agree. I also hope that it has the desired effect and doesn't make the clubhouse issues worse.

We don't know the circumstances. We are not in the clubhouse.

I was referring to the circumstances we do know: New manager, two weeks in, player with positive history.

Probably meant something else and it came out wrong. Pedroia made it clear he didn't like it though. It'll be smoothed out soon I'm sure. I doubt it's really that big a deal, despite what we will be hearing from the media.

That is entirely possible. The comments weren't vicious in their wording. I hope you're right about the media. It's one thing to try and motivate a player, it's another to further screw-up an clubhouse with reported issues.

They haven't had a manager who was good copy since Walpole Joe Morgan.

Valentine's eccentric but he isn't stupid. Youks coming on this weekend and we've won 3 in a row. He said he meant it in a good way and I believe him. He and youk have probably worked it out already. He isn't gonna rip a guy showing improvement after a 3 game beat down on a division rival.

Actually in a lot of ways I think this is going to work out to the Sox advantage. There are going to be some bumps in the road. V is not Tito.

We have all wondered for example if Pedey would step forward a bit this year as the unofficial captain of the Sox.

For one thing, V is very terse in his comments. For the amount of times he opens his mouth (often) it is not like he explains himself very well. It's like he expects people to jump into his head and figure out what point he is trying to make. In this case, that Youk was not showing signs of going off every time he has a less than positive plate appearance and that V thought it was a good thing.

Maybe they will all give each other a little room here which would actually be a good thing. People are reminding us that Youk went off on Ells couple years ago for going to Arizona for medical servicing when in fact the FO told Ells to go to Arizona.

But he did. And as manager of the Boston Red Sox, you'd think he would be able to filter better. At least a qualified person should be able to.

Hey, I totally admit that a month from now we all might be giddy over a turn around and most people will deify Valentine for his genius. I'll be just as happy with the improvement if it happens. I still think it was a dick move.

It's really much ado about nothing, and further proof why it isn't wise to hang on any manger's every word. They are not a very smart or diplomatic bunch.

He said he meant it in a good way. What evidence is there to support to the contrary?

So, it doesn't much matter.

In fact, a whole cottage industry has grown up out of this "I am a bigger ******* athlete than you are" ********. That is one recent aspect of professional sports that I have not enjoyed.

I was reading some comments on the story posted as Yahoo Sports. One from a typically cerebral Yankees fan read:

he's right , no heart no sole the sux suck , go yanks!!

This is exactly the type of dumb-ass fan that makes we want to go screaming into the night. Not just because she's a Yankees fan, but also the fact that the Yankees are the single most robotic bunch of flat lining millionaires that you'll ever see. When was the last time you saw Ster-Rod show emotion other than getting hit by a pitch. even Jeter, who I believe to be a gamer, always looks like he listening to a boring lecture. Apparently, this Yankee fan isn't picking up on that.

Why do we even follow baseball?

Looks like BV's apologized:

Hopefully they move on and the team keeps winning

"Kevin came in this morning and I thought it was about his groin,'' Valentine said.

It was about his groin. "Hey, Bobby. Suck my ####!"

I doubt he was forced to apologize. some one called it in an earlier post, not all is cool and his message has been delivered. It all part of the monkey crap fight.

Stick a fork in him ... He's done.

It will take time for it to play out. Any manager knows that the key is getting the trust of their employees and protecting them against all outsiders. All disagreements between management and employees should be resolved behind closed doors.

Bobby V has done more damage in two weeks than most managers can undertake in two years. Very Sad!!!

There are several management styles that are effective.

It's gonna be a long season in the Sox clubhouse if he doesn't learn from this. If he's trying to "light a fire" under Kevin Youkilis he's going about it the wrong way. Hopefully he learns from this and watches what he says.
Posted
I'm not a real believer that he has to watch what he says. The players get paid millions to play baseball to the best of their ability. If Bobby V has to be a villain to make that happen so be it. I don't think that's the case here tho, and I believe it was a misunderstanding. If Bobby wanted to publicly call out Youk he would, and there wouldn't be any apology afterward.
Posted

He knows Youk is on the downside of his career, and maybe he's trying to light fire under him. I've no problem with that. In fact, I wouldn't mind Bobby going all around the roster and putting them all on notice.

And that's pretty ballsy of Pedroia to say "That's not how we do things here"

Well how DO you guys do things here, Justin?

Pig out on chicken and beer and play Grand Theft Auto while the team embarks on the worst September choke in history?

These entitled players need to take it on the chin, and get to work. My boss can be a prick too. But I don't get paid $20,000,000.00 a year with a 6 month vacation.

Suck it up, Red Sox. It's a privilege to play for this club, don't forget it.
