No, I wasn't sure about Mr Moustache. Those Mets teams turned sour at the end. Most reporters spoke of how intelligent he is and how "he knows it." I figured that he would come out and it would be all about him. That it would be the Bobby Sox not the Red Sox.

He was subdued and respectful. I thought he would think his s*** didn't stink, but he came out and was pashionate and gracious. I ate it up because I'm a sucker.

I wouldn't conclude that he is either humble or noncontroversial based on this press conference. He is an interesting complex personality.

Looked back at that 2002 Mets roster. Not something I had done lately. I know the expectations were high for that team but looking at the roster I am not sure they should have been as high as they were. Not much of a murderers row on the offensive side. Pretty good pitching but I think I remember they went through stretches where they could not score at all! Lost I tremendous number of low scoring games as I recall.

The 2000 team that went to the World Series was not exactly a deep talented team.

Phillips has a note attached to the roster for the 2001 team saying that the 2001 team "lead the league in quality starts" for some period of time but could not score any runs either. Not sure if that is a left handed jab at V or not.

I didn't come to any end all be all conclusion. Just liked what he is saying for now. It was a good start. No matter what I'll give him a few months of games before I really am able to evaluate him.

I didn't mean to imply that you had come to any conclusion. I was just cautioning people against reading too much into today's press conference. For people (I don't mean you MVP78) who thinks they can fit Valentine into a category, e.g. disciplinarian or player's manager, they will find that he doesn't fit preconceived notions.

Just an aside for kicks cause not sure how many people might be watching. Donovan McNabb is being interviewed on the NFL Network and asked about his mind set as he goes through the release (at his request) and waiver process. Donovan responds "Well I am well rested". You are that for sure Donovan.

I heard about that. Where in the hell is going to go?

I know I am in the minority, but as soon as BV's name was mentioned in the managerial search, I wanted him. I was not comfortable with some of the names that were popping up. He was sort of the best of what was offered, is how I felt. After seeing his introduction at the press conference today, I am a bit psyched to see him in the dugout next year and what he can do with this team.

I think the emotion he showed today was genuine and I also think that the reasons he gave were also truthful. I do think he was sitting there looking out at all those faces and it hit him that he was sitting at Fenway Park in a press conference announcing him as manager with a bright brand new home jersey folded in front of him. The sudden recognition that this was Fenway and the Red Sox and that was his jersey hit him all at once. I am sure that will be replayed several times this evening on NESN and I am sure to look at it again. It is rare to have an instance when a guy gets hit like that. You would have thought a building had fallen on his head.

You'd have gotten this reaction with any new manager. There's a large cadre of players who absolutely loved Tito. I know Pedroi was one of them.

Yeah, the way they played and collapsed at the end of the year really showed it. They really truly cared about him.

Give me a break, to this day not one of those players has said a word about the firing of Tito.....they didnt give a s***. In fact, players like Ortiz have come out and said they had "differences" about the way he was being used.

I was a little hesitant about Bobby V........but I am fully on board. No matter how this turns out this year, he was the right guy for the job.

If they players tank again this year, and they finish 3rd place....its on them, not Bobby. Hopefully some changes are made this offseason before they can sabotage the season.

Wake is already gone. Varitek is already gone. Get Beckett the hell out of here next.....and next year when Lackeys arm heals trade him to the Australian league for a bag of balls and a pitcher with no arms. David Ortiz is still a mixed bag. Personally, Id like to see them move on from him. We've been handicapped by the Wakefields, Mirabellis, Variteks, Becketts and Ortiz's long enough. No more special needs, no more babying, no more coddling.....time to move on.

I am excited. Part of the job is done.....finish it off.....please get our team back, no more Jerry Springer ********.

Time to get ready to play ball

Actually, Pedroia was a player that defended Tito. So, don't sit there and say that no one said a word about the firing of Francona, because that is untrue. Here is the article link for proof.

http://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story/_/id/7041452/shock-sadness-terry-francona-players

There may have been players that had their 'differences' with Tito, but Pedroia fully defended Francona. There were actually probably more players that got along with Francona. It was time for him to leave, only because his authority was lost, but that was due to his managing style not being effective last year as it had in recent years. The players and the clubhouse needed new authority and change.

Also, you are a little quick to throw Beckett out the door. Yes, he was part of the chicken and beer thing last year, but he is one of our best and most consistent pitchers. You aren't even going to give him a chance to change his ways? I am just glad you aren't the GM of the Red Sox. We would have no veteran players and our starting rotation would be horrible. I agree that it is time to part ways with Tek and Wake, only because they will not be able to significantly help this team in 2012 or in the future. Ortiz can help this team next year, so if they decide to stick with him, I won't be extremely pissed off. He will still be productive for us next year.

I agree it is time to move on with all of the s*** that happened last season, but don't be so quick to jump the gun.

I'm not ready to throw out an elite starting pitcher with a healthy arm. I think Beckett is probably embarrassed by what happened and remorseful that it tarred Francona. I don't think he will be drinking during games anymore.

As for Wake, it was time for him to go 2 years ago. Better late than later. Tek is a fossil behind the dish. It's time for him to go too.

I just pictured that in my mind and

If Tek is a fossil Wake is just in the process to become petroleum. LoL

When Wakefield and Tek are battery mates, they have to pump up the music to drown out the noise of their creaking joints.

I tend to agree with what you're saying, but the thing that scares me about Beckett is Jack McKeon's testimony about how he was unsuccessful in getting through to Josh about this exact same behavior almost ten years ago when he was with the Marlins. We all know Beckett's got a massive ego and is stubborn as a mule, but he's also go the hardware to back it up. And obviously he hasn't changed a thing over the past decade. So what makes people think he's interested in changing anything now?

I can easily see Beckett coming to loggerheads with Valentine and the FO. But I also believe they know that, and are prepared to keep him on a short leash.

I don't know him very much in order to emit an opinion, but after reading the posts from the old school guys of this forum, seems that he is the adequate guy, plus I just listened the press conference and he sounded genuine and even he has a lot road walked, he looked like he just got his first job, so... I feel kind of confident about his arrival.

V is on his way to the Dominican to visit Ortiz. While this is being promoted as the first of V's goodwill tours I am inclined to think it is more than that. I would be willing to bet that V has been given a task by his new bosses. I believe V will be trying to coax Ortiz to accept the offer that the Sox want him to take which might be two years at a lower per year salary than he will earn in arbitration or accept the arbitration that they have offered. I just wish the hell that I knew for sure which one they want V to peddle at Ortiz but I would be really surprised if he does not have a task to perform out there.

I do think it will be wrapped up in an argument for how much the Sox want him back but the message if properly delivered will be we want you back but we really need you to take this deal...whatever that is.

Tough duty. Not only is V playing ambassador, but at some point in the conversation he's going to have to inform Big Diva that if he does in fact choose to re-sign with the Sox he's gonna be expected to run through first base on every AB, as well as learn how to use a glove--two things he's never been told in Boston.

I believe they Ben/Bobby et al will be taking Beckett's pulse. I am not 100% convinced that the club really wants Beckett back. I sense they would like to trade him if they could. I know that will be hard to do.

You guys are not in the minority. I think most people think Valentine was the best candidate available and now that he is hired, most would approve of him. Of course, that only will last until his first screwup. Boston is a tough town to work in.

Posted
The only manager i would have personally liked over Valentine was Mike Maddux because of his success dealing with pitchers, but he wasn't a possibility because he simply didn't want to come to Boston.

Did we ever hear anything more about his reason why other than that cockamamie 'too far from my family' crap he served up initially?

Something happened there. I'd like to know what.

The only thing Ortiz will listen to at this point is the $$$. It's all well and good that Valentine went down there to stroke his ego but in the end it is the money that counts.

Might be worth the effort. Although his agents might be trying to seed the field with rumors of interest in order to bump up the price, I really don't think he is going to get offers that are off the charts. At the end of the day taking arbitration probably works out better for Ortiz than any other option.

Well said. After hearing what Schilling said about Valentine I was really skeptical but if you look at it as it is it's really not a bad deal.
